Redskins decide winning is overrated

Update [2007-9-25 0:0:15 by Skin Patrol]: I'll get a post game recap along with my thoughts on where we go from here hopefully by tomorrow afternoon. Just spent the day dealing with Law School stuff, along with watching the Monday night game and I'm beat. Regular posting resumes daily the day after today. Cheers.
Lose to the Giants 24-17, and disappointing doesn't begin to explain my feelings on it. Suffice to say, I'm no that impressed with our 'Skins right now. I would accuse them of lacking urgency, but I saw a lot of it in the 2nd half, as the Redskins did everything possible to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Joe Gibbs football hasn't historically involved failing three times in a row on 1st and goal.

Congratulations to the Giants for hanging around while we imploded. Fumbles, missed tackles, and tripping pretty well defined the 2nd half and this loss. Full recap pending.

Why is Mike Sellers getting balls his way?
Come on, didn't he get about 5 more than Lloyd did?
He's like freaking offensive lineman. There's no hope throwing it to him. Or giving him the ball at all. Stop it.

Sellers had 8 touchdowns
in 2005, 7 of them receiving, if memory serves they were all redzone. He's usually a great target, the pass to him was low on 2nd and goal, yet, frankly, he should've caught it.

Talk about rolling over...
playing dead and giving a game away.

If I was a Giants fan, I'd be happy with the win but I wouldn't expect too many teams to hand them wins.

I'm so mad right now.  I should have turned the game off at halftime.  That was a pathetic 2nd half.  ARE played well, the defense played pretty good considering they were on the field for what seemed like 85% of the second half.

The offense can't play like that and expect to keep their jobs... much less win.

I... I can't even express how bad that was.

Bad Coaching and Dumb Quarterback
Are is that the other way around........ Joe Gibbs needs to go back to NASCAR. This is a different time and he just does not get it or want to except it. I have backed him until today and I had to watch the secound half be given to a team that is not as good as we made them look. Its sad, but he needs to go.....Our Quarterback...  He is not the brightest and that was proven today. Maybe that is why he waited so long to start....  He has no clue what he is doing.... He is affraid to throw half the time and then has no clue what check down he just came off.

Heckuva Game!
Thought you guys were gonna force OT at the end. Can't understand the running play at the end. Anyway, great effort by both sides.

Helmets
I liked the throwback helmets the skins wore today. I really think they should think about wearing them full time. They were really cool!

The Game
Well, as far as this game goes, I personally think that there was a lot of bad offensive play calling. Joe Gibbs is conservative when he really should not be. You have be able to spread the defense and its something that Redskins have not been able to do in  a long time. I am not sure if it has to do with the injuries on the O Line and having to have players stay back to protect Jason but the Redskins have the weapons to be a offense that should be able to put up points.  The Redskins (still my team and always will be) need something that will wake up the offense. I hate the fact that all of the Redskins games are SO close and leave you on the edge of your seat. I also don't like that fact that I am at home and I can pretty much tell you when the Redskins are going to run and or pass the ball. In defense of Jason, he is a good QB, he can throw the ball a little high sometimes but its got to be hard passing the ball to someone thats 5'11" I mean you really think that E. Manning is a good QB, I don't! Its not hard when your receivers are 6'5" he has huge targets all over the field, that makes his job so much more easy then half the QB's in the NFL...just my personal thoughts! Give Jason Time Folks! He will be ok..I think that the coaching staff needs to believe in him more...instead of pounding the ball..spread it out, make the defense play it safe because they don't know what the offense is going to do. Like I said...its sad when I am watching the game at home and I can tell what the offense is going to do, so you know the pros know! Hint Thats why we don't really score points! In conclusion we will always play close games until the offense can spread the ball around..after all we have the weapons to do it!

Final two plays
Did anyone else think it was stupid to run those two jumbo package plays in a row?

It always seems like the most successful play down at the goal line is to spread out the D by going 4 wide and run it up the gut. I swear those jumbo bunch formations never work.

Another thing...
First of all, I agree that the last two plays were suspect. What I dont get is why we had to rush to get that play off. Atleast give everyone time to take a breath and get settled. They rushed that way too much. Dont get me wrong, I love Joe Gibbs...I just dont get what hes thinking sometimes.

I don't have a problem with running...
if Portis is in the game and they don't run the same damn play 2 times in a row.

Same formation, same personnel, same run.  That just doesn't make any sense to me.

The Sellers play was a good design because the Giants thought the Skins would run out of that formation.  I would have liked to see a bootleg or something that gives JC a run/pass option on the final play of the game.

Speaking of which, anyone know why Portis wasn't in?

That was the most frustrating drive: penalties, drops, bad passes.  If it wasn't for ARE, the Skins would have turned it over on downs without even getting close to the endzone.

Just a bad, bad game.

this offense...reminds me of High School...
I understand that when you have a lead, you play conservatively. you run the ball hard up the middle, utilize passing plays strictly on predictable downs (i.e. 3rd and long etc), and you protect the ball as you eliminate clock. However, if this was the case, one could assume the Skins have held a substantial lead in every game for the past 2+ yrs.

Al Saunders and his 700 page playbook. WHY?? what's in that book. i'm guessing it's 690 pages of running the ball up the gut. we have a young (seemingly mobile) QB with a cannon, TWO number one tailbacks, 3 (incredibly fast and presumably capable) receivers if you include the exiled Brandon Lloyd, and a defense that can dominate when on the field. So, why is it that every play is so predictably dull and inimaginative? The only deep balls we try are to Moss on 1st downs when everyone in the stadium--including the opposition--knows it as well.

Offenses work when there is deviation in gameplan. Predictability will doom every conservative offense.

2nd half:

how many 1st and 2nd downs did we try--and fail--to gain yards on the ground up the middle? It would end up being 3rd and long and the Giants knew to drop back, blitz at the line, and consequently thwart the Skins' efforts. Also, why does it seem like everytime the Skins' need 8 yards for the first down, they run a quick 6 yard pattern? That's not how you move the chain.

The Portis fumble...if you always run the ball, the fumbles will happen. Although he clearly messed up the hand off, i'm sure the pressure of the constant running into a wall was making him try to pound the middle a bit faster and harder.

Santana Moss is a big time receiver. Randle El is a big time playmaker. Campbell has the arm that QB's pray for. So, why not take some chances? If the drive fails, at least the opposition has the fear of a deep ball and aggressive style and one would then hope that the D can hold up. If the Redskins don't deviate from their current offensive strategies, this season will be very long. The parts of this offense are way too dynamic to play this way. If Gibbs doesn't grow some balls, this team will end up averaging 15points/game and will be sub .500 again. I can't deal with that

my frosh yr JV team took more chances that this team and our playbook would've have filled up a legal pad page! GET IT TOGETHER!!!!!

Bad Coaching
The second half was HORRIBLE.  Can't put it on the defense because the offense gave them no time to rest.  We were constantly running the ball on second and long putting way too much pressure on Campbell to convert long third downs.

And don't get me started on that brutal two minute drill.  They had PLENTY of time (they actually needed to kill clock) but for some reason kept wasting time outs and spiking the ball.

We have the most expensive coaching staff in the league but they seem to be our number 1 weakness so far.

I have to agree with the thoughts above about taking more chances downfield.  If anything, Campbell's strength is the long ball and if they just start putting it up there more they are bound to come down with a good percentage of them (especially considering almost all of our receiver's are deep threats).

Al Saunders
Last year, Al Saunders had problems at the goal line. There were games where we would inexplicably not have TJ Duckett in, or games where we'd throw ridiculous passes short of the goal line in an attempt to baffle defenses. Terrible lack of production. Play action to Chris Cooley!!!!!!

Im No Head Coach but....
When the offense lines up with two TE's and only one WR all the time, the opposing defense dosen't exactally have to assume what the play is going to be. A run or some play action dink and dunk pass. Run Run then 3rd and 6. I'm so sick of this vanilla offense, and predictible play calling. Our coaching is lacking and the communication sucks under 2 min. Why do we have to be on edge every game, it would be nice to have a 14pt lead in the 4th quarter for once. Even Gibbs said that he expects all the games to be close..where's the killer instinct!?

LOTS of bad play calling
in the second half. I love our running game but when they stuff it on 1st and 2nd down for three straigh possesions its time to change. Leaving campbell in third and long constantly when the D knows it coming is not his fault.

We need possesion receiver(s) to step up or we need to find one, quickly! 1 and 2 are not physically big enough to cut it.

We cant expect our line to bowl over every team, they did a good job in the first half. The passing game must improve for when this will undoubtetly happen. With the right side of our line missing, receivers who can catch shorter to medium passes are missing from our team.

Mike Sellers
is 284+1=touchdown.  They act like the guy won't fall forward.  where was the play action on fourth down...our TEs can catch...c'mon!
