What we won.

New feature here at Hogs Haven that may or may not be an amaranthine attraction. Here's what we won, per the elegant box score:

  1. Total first downs 19-18. Tied for 12 by passing though we snuck out with 7 over their 6 by rushing.
  2. Average gain per offensive yard, barely: 5.4 to 5.2.
  3. 130 rushing yards to their 114; the Eagles are not a rushing team and this is an empty victory. The true credit goes to the defense for keeping the Eagles from making up the yards in the passing game.
  4. 33 rushes to their 20.
  5. SACKS. JC sacked once for 2 yards, Donovan sacked 3 times for 14 yards.
  6. 6.6 yards per passing play vs. their 3.5, which is pathetic, or equally impressive credited to the defense.
  7. 17-9 total return yardage. What a big stat.
  8. 2-0 in touchdowns, despite losing the turnover battle 1-0. D + a wall that semi separates one land area from another.
  9. Red Zone efficiency: 2 of 4 makes us 50%, 0 of 4 makes them 0%. Holla at your defense.
  10. TOP: Ok, ok, ok... by 8 seconds.
  11. 20-12.

Defense
It's amazing what a couple healthy CB's can do for a Gregg Williams defense.  This is a different team, and the offense is looking great.  Hopefully the line holds up.

I just hope he keeps blitzing
Donovan made a bunch of bad throws, but managed to avoid this game sans a turnover. I hope we keep the pressure up to generate more of those and I'm thrilled we won a game where their QB played error full but mistake free.

The pickups of Fabini and Kendall...
are really helping the team stay afloat offensively.  Both are veterans (though Fabini's constant penalties didn't show that) and should be suitable fill-ins for the injured starters.

That being said, this team can ill-afford any more injuries on the O-Line.  Heyer showed he was ready... but I don't trust any of the other backups.

I'm guessing a torn triceps for an RG means the season.  Anyone disagree?

by TexSkins on Sep 18, 2007 1:35 AM EDT   0 recs

I disagree.
Jansen played with two broken thumbs. I think there are ways to get around a torn tricep.

In any event, I don't think Fabini was strong as related to penalties, but he played just fine when he wasn't being penalty. That is encouraging, though I worry about the effect on the running game. What I know is that JC will still get an adequate chance to pass the ball.

Didn't a torn triceps...
but Jansen out for a year?

Thumbs are one thing... but you're talking about the major muscle use to push away from the body.  I see no way he can play with that injury... and it has nothing to do with toughness.  It has to do with Biology and Anatomy.

Nevermind...
I get triceps and Achilles confused all the time.

A torn triceps did end Orlando Pace's season last year.

In doing my own research, I found this amazing article from the SBN USC site Conquest Cronicles as one of their linemen (C Matt Spanos) recently tore his triceps.

What I get from this is that it isn't career threatening, but it might require surgery or a significant amount of healing time.

I'm not a doctor... but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Naw, you were right.
Per Redskins Insider:
It may not be as severe as this usually is - a torn triceps is often season ending. Will have to get an MRI to know, but this is certainly not good news for the Skins.

A right side of Wade/Fabini is not what anyone imagined.

I do not like the idea of Jason Fabini in the game at all, but outside those false starts it didn't appear as if he screwed up too drastically. I trust Joe Bugel to make sure the false starts cease as well.

Jason Campbell
I don't think his stat line even tells the whole story. I thought he was even better than it says. Had the Redskins receivers not been dropping balls left and right how knows what kind of numbers he'd have put up?

He has accuracy issues and made at least one poor decision, but what young QB doesn't? I think Skins fans to have to be very excited about this guy. By the end of this year you'd have to think that there will be less overthrows and he won't be making that hitch that led to the pick.

I admit that I feel somewhat vindicated after this game in that I predicted that the Redskins would be a playoff team this year. I also said that they'd be better than Dallas, and so far I feel pretty good about that. Dallas has a better offense, but the Redskins offense is pretty good and will only improve as Campbell grows. On defense, I think the Redskins are measurably better.

Appreciate that.
The Santana miss was frustrating, but I still maintain that he's got a damn fine deep pass. The drops early on were incredibly frustrating though thankfully it wasn't consequential.

Other random notes...
4 for 16 on 3rd down is bad.  2 for 3 on 4th is good... but they don't need to be going for so many 4th downs if they could just convert on 3rd.

Even with the injured O-line: no Tackles for Loss in the running game and only 1 sack against an aggressive, blitzing defense.  Not too bad.  Actually, that's pretty impressive.

5 penalties is not so good.  Them only being a total of 25 yards is acceptable.

2 for 2 on Goal to Go is good.  With the running game, and Mike Sellers, there is no reason this team should be stopped on short yardage.

JC showed an ability to make things happen outside the pocket.  He's not a scrambler but he makes things happen, which is good.

ARE needs to do better than 17 yards on 4 punt returns.

McIntosh leading the team with 8 tackles (1 assist) and a sack is good news.  I'm impressed with the defense overall.  They don't look the same as the 2005 defense... but as they grow together, I think GW will be able to do more things.  They got a pash rush sometimes only rushing 4... another good sign.

The offense had 3 drives of 8 or more plays and 7 drives of 6 or more.  They only had one 3 and out (they also had the 2 and INT but who's counting?)  They also had 6 drives covering more than 3 minutes of game time... allowing the defense to get some rest.

Until the final 3 drives of the game, the defense only allowed 1 drive of more than 8 plays and only 2 of longer than 3 minutes of game time.

On 3rd or 4th and short (3 or less), the offense went 4 for 5.

Any way you slice it, 2-0 is a beautiful thing.

Punt returns
I actually don't think it's fair to blame ARE. The Eagles clearly decided to take him out of the game. Sav Rocca, who has a huge leg and could punt the ball 60 yards if he wanted to, was clearly told to sacrifice distance and go for hangtime.

In fact, I'm not sure I remember if ARE fielded a punt where there wasn't 3 or 4 Eagles standing around in front of him.

True...
but I didn't see him dodging 5 guys, juking 2 more, spinning around 3 more and then stiff-arming the punter back to Australia either.

Because he obviously wasn't trying.

All I'm saying is that if he was the Philly returner tonight... he'd get cheered for actually catching the first one and then booed for not making TDs on all the rest.
