Redskins Supplemental Draft 2007

Pro Football Weekly is on top of the upcoming Supplemental Draft (1:00 PM tomorrow) so I'll cede the floor to them. Big scoop available here.

For those of you who don't know, the Supplemental Draft is available for players who became eligible only after the draft. Mostly for flakes who decided to stay in college, wait, no, I want to play pro, ok let me play pro. Or guys with eligibility problems from previous years (which can happen for any number of reasons, such as breaking the stringent and vague team rule whereas players aren't allowed to rob people). Your 2007 Supplemental Draft class is, in its entirety:

Morgan State DT Robert Armstrong
Florida State DT Clifton Dickson
Maryland OT Jared Gaither
Central Missouri DB RoShawn Marshall
Glendale (Ariz.) Community College WR Eric McCain
Connecticut DB Donta' Moore
Georgia DB Paul Oliver
Nebraska OT Chris Patrick
Utah State DT Brian Soi
East Central (Okla.) OT Aaron Turner
Texas State-San Marcos LB Mark Washington

Earlier in the week, PFW helpfully provided a scouting report on all 11 players. Here are some of the glowing reports on these guys, in case your hopes were growing irrational:

DT Robert Armstrong, Morgan State... Known to be lazy, plays lazy and will not be drafted.

DT Clifton Dickson... Declared academically ineligible for the '05 season and took classes at Tallahassee (Fla.) Community College to try to regain eligibility. Was arrested after being tracked down by a police helicopter in a wooded area in January '06 in Tallahassee for a robbery in progress and was charged with burglary of a dwelling and conveyance, grand theft and possession of marijuana. Very unreliable, undisciplined project who has not seen the field the past two years.

SS-OLB Donta' Moore, Connecticut... Charged with second-degree reckless endangerment, third-degree assault and unlawful discharge of a firearm and was given two years' probation and was granted accelerated rehabilitation. The incident got him suspended for the entire '05 season... Was dismissed from the team for '07 due to academic reasons.

Etc.

Of the players available, the only ones I see making a shot on this team are at OL and DT. Linebacker is stacked. Wide receiver is stacked. Cornerback is stacked. Safety is stacked.

Both the first two D-linemen listed are trouble. Jared Gaither is a local talent, lost eligibility because of academics, but is very athletic. Played B-Ball and there is reason to believe he's a physical monster that simply needs good coaching, which we can provide. Chris Patrick is versatile but not good. DT Brian Soi is the best linemen available from the looks of it. Aaron Turner gets a no vote.

So that's Jared Gaither, Brian Soi, and perhaps Chris Patrick that are worth considering. Do we have a shot at those guys? Picks are lotteries organized into three tiers, and we're in the first one, with 5 other teams. I'd say that gives us a moderate chance to pick up either Gaither or Soi, a decent chance to choose among them, and a great chance that we'll get at least one of the three. All of these guys are marginal to make the team, though hope springs eternal.

Reader(s), any of these guys you're big on? Is there any real reason to get our hopes up?

I am actually big on Gaither. His freshman year he did not give up a sack. There are questions being posed now, as he did not do so well the next year, however, from what I received from an inside source, his productivity dropped because of a couple reasons: 1)The coach did not want Gaither to leave this year for the regular season draft and as a result not only did he not start him, but moved him from left to right tackle in games (doing it sometimes more than 2 times in one game) which did not really allow Gaither to get into a rhythm and be consistent like his freshman year when he started and played only at left tackle, 2)Because of how the coach was treating him (which he did not treat him that way his freshman year because he was not eligible to leave that year) he lost a little bit of interest, thus his work ethic suffered. Now, you may say, what is to say that won't happen at the NFL level, well in the NFL the best person typically plays, however at MD, he was clearly their best offensive lineman, but was forced to be on the bench. I have watched film on Gaither and he has some serious raw talent, he just needs a great coach. I saw him in one play hold off a DE with one hand and a blitzing linebacker with the other hand for at least 2-3 seconds, now if that doesn't show raw talent; I really don't know what does.

All that work ethic stuff

should get figured out in Trainin Camp anyways, so I have absolutely zero problem drafting him and seeing what he's got. He's as good an option as any of the other people available, so should we get first pick I have no issue with selecting this kid.

It's low risk since we can always just cut him.
