Jerametrius was a Butler

Update [2007-6-7 15:37:15 by Skin Patrol]: Hat tip to ES, the Redskins signed Butler to a 1-year, 595K contract per Adam Schefter. That's League Minimum for a player with six years of experience.
Pretty funny, right? Jeremiah was a Bullfrog, Jerametrius was a Butler... I'm here all week, folks.

Anyways, the Redskins signed cornerback Jerametrius Butler per the Official Site. First and foremost, this man is in desperate need of a nickname as Jerametrius doesn't lend itself to easy copy. Reader(s) get it done.

Semi bio:

Butler, 5-10, 185 pounds, has mostly played cornerback in his six-year NFL career. Originally a fifth-round draft choice by the St. Louis Rams in 2001, he has played his entire NFL career in St. Louis.

Butler has played in 63 career games with 31 starts and has recorded a total of 176 tackles, nine interceptions, and 22 passes defensed.

His most productive season came in 2004, when he logged 79 tackles and five interceptions. A knee injury forced Butler to miss the entire 2005 season with Rams, but he returned in 2006 to play in six games.

My knee-jerk reaction to new-used defensive backs is to measure them against Kenny Wright and Mike Rumph, as those two spelled trouble for us in 2006. And, actually, Butler measures quite favorably. In 63 games he has 9 interceptions, or a pick every 7 games. By comparison, Kenny Wright has one every 18 games, Mike Rumph one every 46. So, that's a good thing.

Jerametrius' 2004 performance blows away anything either Rumph or Wright have done in their career, and would compare favorably with just about anyone on the roster not-named Shawn Springs. He started all 16 games, had 79 tackles, 5 interceptions, and 14 passes defensed. That was following a very solid 2003 when he had four interceptions and, again, more than 70 tackles. The big knock on him is that as recently as 2005 he suffered a season-ending injury that's kept him largely under the radar. Whether that injury is recurring or not is immaterial, as Butler is not being brought in to start immediately but rather as a quality backup (behind even David Macklin; we're talking about #4 CB). If he goes down, we lose nothing. At this point, Butler has not yet made the team -- should he do so he will have already outperformed expectations.

To make room the team released DB Chip Cox. Best of luck, Chip, we hardly knew you.

more CBs!
Joe & Co. continue to tacitly admit how big their mistake was last year using backups like Wright and Rumph.

The more CBs, the better, I always say.

No argument here.
Everything about last year was insane. We went into the season without a #3 CB, which is crazy if your #1 guy is Carlos Rogers. You should have 1-4 set by the time the season begins, especially if you are experimenting with a brand new safety (Adam Archuleta).
