Fred Smoot is back and better than ever
Info on a changed Fred Smooooooot complements Gary Fitzgerald at the Official Site:
Then Smoot went away to Minnesota, and life changed him.
He's still outgoing and playful. He even vows that "Smoot Smack," his brand of trash talking on and off the field, will be back.
But the new Fred Smoot is more humble.
"I'll play my role," said the Jackson, Miss., native, who bought a house not far from Redskin Park after signing a five-year contract that included $7 million up front. "This is home. This is where I want to be. I can see living here for a long time after I'm done with football.
I'm over it. In the immortal words of Clinton Portis, modified ever so slightly by yours truly: "I don't know if he was [performing illicit acts with a dildo] or not, but it's his property and it's his [dildo]. If that's what he wants to do, do it... You know, what people do behind closed doors..."
Welcome back Fred Smoot. Hogs Haven is more than confident that Smoot, changed or not, is a huge upgrade as the nickel back over either Mike Rumph or Kenny Wright. We're better off with him returned to the flock, and that's all I care about.

It Wouldn't Take Much
I'm glad that you guys are happy with him, though. I'm just happy he'll be giving up 7-8 yard cushions in Washington next year instead of Minnesota.

Could be a coaching case?
The murmurs out of Minnesota definitely concern me, but I'm just unwilling to conclude that Fred Smoot somehow forgot how to play football in virtue of playing for the Vikings.

I don't know about that
24 INT in 2005 (good for 2nd in the NFL)
21 INT in 2006 (good for 5th in the NFL)
That's 45 INT in 2 years. . .only 3 of which ended up in the hands of Fred Smoot. He had one in his first game as a Viking (against Tampa Bay), one in his last game as a Viking (against Green Bay for a TD), and one against St. Louis in '05 in a game where the Rams started a rookie (Ryan Fitzpatrick) at quarterback. Fitzpatrick proceeded to throw 5 INT on the afternoon.
So I don't know if you can blame the coaching for Smoot's lack of productivity in Minnesota. Lots of other guys got interceptions for the Vikings over the last two years.

I think
Don't mistake me questioning the Vikings handling of Smoot to me questioning the Vikings defensive strategy overall.
