Landry stock with Redskins climbing
Per Jason La Canfora in this morning's Post:
I suspect that a lot of the support comes from our recent history in drafting at this (kind of) position. Sean Taylor is unquestionably the best drafted player of the Joe Gibbs era -- I think this works in Landry's favor. He also happens to be the consensus best at his position, something untrue for our other options. Amobi Okoye has climbed up many charts as the chic DT pick, though Alan Branch still turns some heads given (irrational) concerns about Okoye's maturity. Jamaal Anderson and Gaines Adams wrestle over who will be this year's best DE, with no clear winner distinguishing themself. But LaRon Landry stands alone among Safeties (and Defensive Backs in general) as the accordant best among Draft "experts".
How that debate ends internally at Redskins Park, we'll see on Saturday. Until then here's an argument against Landry provided by "a high-ranking official from an NFC team":
The argument in favor of Landry, provided complements the team:
Is that what would be best for Your Washington Redskins in 2007? I leave that debate to my non-existant reader(s), take it away.
Other blogs on Landry:
Robs Obs takes a moment away from political commentary to weigh in, against Landry. He is sold on the too many gamblers argument provided above.
War Cry! noted yesterday that Landry's Mock Draft stock has been steadily rising, though he thinks Okoye is the guy right now.
Ryan Wilson at Football Outsiders, who also deserves a Hat Tip on this, reminds that Landry doesn't at all address the woeful Redskins Defensive Line.

I don't know that a DL is the pick...
I see Landry as a good talent, but much like AA, he's the same type of player as Taylor. He plays near the line, stops the run, gambles on the ball in the air and has some issues with the deep ball. Sound familiar?
If the team really wants a safety, I'd rather trade down and target Nelson from FLA and Griffin from UT, as I see both of those guys as better coverage safeties. Nelson still makes plays all over the field in the mold of Landry, but he seems to me to be the better coverage guy, leaving the meast that is Sean Taylor to roam the field and decapititate people at his leisure...
There's no doubting that Landry is a great player, but I'd rather see the team trade down... or take a DL if they feel one of them is worthy of the #6 spot. If neither of those two things can be done, the team could do a lot worse than Landry.

Just for the record
But I could live with Anderson...just not at number 6...Though trading down mid to relatively lat round (15-24) would be nice, and we can still do well upgrading the line, and should be able to find another lineman with the second pick. Yes, both a DE and a DT. Guard, safety, and WR can be addressed in rounds 5 and 6...with 7 taking the best available player.
