Sean Taylor a Pro Bowler

Update [2007-2-7 11:33:36 by Skin Patrol]: Per Bleeding Green Nation, Brian Dawkins is missing the game not per injury but for the birth of his child. Congrats to Dawkins.

Due to an injured pregnant Brian Dawkins (I'm funny), Sean Taylor is a late addition to the NFC Pro Bowl team.

Sean Taylor is headed to Hawaii. The hard-hitting safety has been named to the Pro Bowl, replacing Brian Dawkins on the NFC roster.

For Taylor, it is his first Pro Bowl nod. He joins left tackle Chris Samuels as Redskins' representatives.

Melinda Waldrop at the Redskin Huddle raises the question and I'm repeating it: "DOES TAYLOR DESERVE a trip to Hawaii?"

While this year was definitely a step backwards for Taylor, I have no problem accepting his Pro Bowl bid as he's earned a spot on the roster in years past. He is just an alternate, afterall, and although it was an off year for Taylor it was still an impressive one relative to his peers. He led our (admittedly dismal) defense in tackles and, despite recording career lows in Interceptions (1) and Passes Defensed (6), he forced 3 fumbles which was more than 2005 or 2004.

Gary Fitzgerald seems to agree that this might be praise for prior snubbing, adding:

The Pro Bowl nod is certainly recognition that Taylor has been among the best at his position since the Redskins drafted him in the first round (fifth overall) of the 2004 NFL Draft.

And reminds us not to forget one of the few truly triumphant moments of the year, complements Sean Taylor:

Taylor, who also plays on kick and punt coverage and recorded 17 special teams tackles, helped produce the Redskins' most memorable play of 2006.

With six seconds left against Dallas and the scored tied, Taylor recovered a blocked field goal attempt and returned it 30 yards.

A 15-yard face mask penalty on Dallas gave the Redskins the ball at the Cowboys' 31-yard line. Nick Novak came on to kick a 47-yard field goal to give the Redskins a dramatic 22-19 win.

I'm just happy he is being recognized. This wasn't the right year for that honor but better late than never. I fully expect Sean Taylor to earn first team honors in the Pro Bowl next year.

So what do you think? Does he deserve it? Is that important? Is the Pro Bowl?
