NFL Combine Open Thread

Just like yesterday, this will be your NFL Combine Open Thread. Today we sort through DBs, which could be important for the Redskins if we decided to trade down. Idea still balatantly stolen from Blogging the Boys.

Rather than updating the information constantly throughout the day, here's the link. As I'm not nearly as familiar with the Defensive Backs, who we might want, who has been talked about, etc. it would just be too much trouble to sort through and get the numbers on the targeted players. If someone else wants to do so, knock yourself out in the comments section.

CB Leon Hall of Michigan is the top prospect at our 2nd biggest need position and as of this posting he has produced nothing but a forgettable 15 reps on the bench (middle of the pack).

I've been hearing a lot about Chris Houston...
the CB from Arkansas lately.  So far he has the best 40 (4.32) and most reps on bench (27 from a 4.3 DB??)

Most of these top prospects won't make it past round 1 so, I think the team is going to have to look further down to pick one up.  Right now, it'd have to be in round 4, but hopefully a trade moves that up into the round 2 or 3 range.

If we trade down
we can get a Chris Houston in Round 2. Remember that if Houston improves his stock to a Round 1 guy, then someone else falls to the 2nd round.

The value of trading down continues to improve...

I also think...
the less "talented" DEs better fit the team's defense.  I think Carriker and Robison would fit in nicely, plus they will be around in the 12-20 range that the team would trade down to.

Picking up that 2nd round pick would be HUGE because the team could essentially add 2 starters to the defense.  If Springs is gone, it is absolutely necessary that the team pick up a corner in the draft.  And by corner, I mean a corner who could walk on the field and challenge Rogers for the number 1 spot.

Here's the Yahoo! take on the DTs, another spot that could improve the defense.  But again, I'd rather get a lower graded DE and a 2nd round CB, but DT is certainly a possibility, as is LB (unless the team does something stupid like signing Fletcher.)

I can't see the team drafting a S or OLB, but I think all the other spots on the defense are fair game.

That's what a lot of people
critical of trading down don't understand. This draft is loaded at DE, meaning there will be starter quality players remaining in the second round. You aren't going to get two starters by picking up a CB in the 2nd, but you could if you went DE than CB.

Keep in mind, 3rd rounders can start too. If you haven't heard of this guy Chris Cooley...

er...
you could if you went CB then DE.

I think you're right...
and I think tonight or tomorrw I'm gonna work up a post combine scenario that I think will benefit the team the most.  Well, knowing me, multiple scenarios.

My instinct says trade with TEN, get a Chris Houston/Aaron Ross/Darrelle Revis (I think Hall's definately gone before the Redskins could draft him if they trade down) in round 1 and Robison in round 2 (I think Carriker will be gone before the end of the 1st round.)  I think there is some depth at DT that will be around in round 4 (the next pick the team has after the current round 1) in a Walter Thomas (6'3, 370!!!!) or maybe a Ryan McBean from Oklahoma State.  Those type of guys could become a Golston, as in play some but not start, in their rookie year.

Then the team would still have round 5 and round 6 to draft anyway they want to improve the overall depth.

That's just my initial reaction.
