NFL Combine Open Thread
Blatantly stealing the idea from Blogging the Boys, this is your Open Thread for the NFL Combine. Day 5 is the most important for Redskins fans as Linebackers and D-Linemen are working out (ILB is a need, D-Line is the need for the team). I'll try and post relevant information as it becomes available, all from NFL.com:
40 yard dash:
DE Gaines Adams ran a 4.64, the fastest in Group 7.
DE Tim Crowder ran a 4.69 (4th in Group 7)
ILB Patrick Willis ran a 4.51, 7th in Group 9
OLB/DE Jarvis Moss ran a 4.70, 2nd in Group 8
DE Quentin Moses ran a 4.82, 5th in Group 8
Bench:
ILB Patrick Willis had 22 reps, which was mediocre in group 9.
DT Amobi Okoye (isn't he like 19???) had 29 reps, good for 4th in Group 8.
DE Quentin Moses only had 17.
DE/OLB Jarvis Moss only had 16. (By the way, I say "only" because I could totally do like 35+.)
DT Alan Branch had 33 reps, good for 2nd in Group 7.
DE Adam Carriker also had 33 reps.
DE Tim Crowder, of Texas, had 32 reps.
Three Cone:
DE Quentin Moses ran a 7.38, 6th fastest in Group 8
DE Adam Carriker (stock rising) ran a 7.06, fastest in Group 6th and 2nd overall
DE Gaines Adams ran a 7.17, 5th in Group 7
DE Tim Crowder ran a 7.28, 6th in Group 7
Vertical Jump:
DE Quentin Moses got 32, 9th in Group 8
DE Gaines Adams got 37, 2nd in Group 7
DE Adam Carriker jumped 32 and 1/2, 4th in Group 7
DE Tim Crowder jumped 30 and 1/2, 7th in Group 7
20 Shuttles:
DE Adam Carriker ran a 4.18, 1st in Group 7
DE Tim Crowder ran a 4.32, 2nd in Group 7
DE Gaines Adams ran a 4.36, 3rd in Group 7
Broad Jump:
ILB Patrick Willis jumped 9'11", 8th in Group 9
DE/OLB Jarvis Moss jumped 10', 2nd in Group 8
DE Quentin Moses jumped 9'7", 6th in Group 8
DE Gaines Adams jumped 9'11", 1st in Group 7
DE Tim Crowder jumped 9'3", 5th in Group 7
DE Adam Carriker jumped 9'2", 6th in Group 7
By the way, though I don't think much of the combine, I encourage readers to analyze, overanalyze, speculate, etc. on the above information however irresponsibly they want in the comments section below.

Tank Tyler..
I bet I could do 225lbs. once, with 2 guys on either side helping. This guy does it 42 times. That's crazy.
Anthony Spencer (PUR) had 30. Brian Robison from UT had 27 and he jumped 40 1/2. He ran well but I don't remember the time off the top of my head. He might be a good pickup in round 2 or 3 if the team is actually able to trade down.
Charles Johnson had 33. I think he could jump up a few spots if he does well in the other events.
I'm disappointed Jamaal Anderson didn't work out. I would have liked to see him stack up side by side with the others.
As far as linebackers go, Tim Shaw... the other Penn State linebacker was impressive. He played DE this past year because of the depth at LB (Poz, Dan Connor) but she showed up at the combine. 4.49, 26 reps. Those are better numbers than Poz (4.65, 22 reps) and he is about the same size. Poz is 6-1 5/8, 238 and Shaw weighed in at 6-1 1/2, 236. He could be a steal at the top of round 2.
I'll wait until they post the full times and everything later to weigh in again.

If the other times come up

I want Carriker...
Mike Mayock, NFL network's resident Mel Kiper draft expert was talking about how the 40 times usually translate to the 20 yard shuttle. (Yes, I have no life and watched some of the draft coverage.) Usually, guys who run a 4.9 (like Carriker with his 4.85) run about a 4.5 in the shuttle. The fact that ran a 4.18, second best for the DL groups, shows his quicknes. Combine that with his 32 1/2in vertical and 33 reps on bench... and you get the guy I want.
I'm disappointed in Jamaal Anderson, though i hope his injury is something minor.
Gaines Adams did well and probably should be the tope DE at this moment.
Alan Branch confirmed my suspicions: he's a large man.
Brian Robison did well. I hadn't given him much thought, especially since he was on the same line as Crowder. But he was in the top 5 for DL in a bunch of events (overall standing in parentesis) Three Cone (1), Vertical (1), 20 shuttle (3), Broad Jump (1), and 40 (3). Add that to his 27 reps and you get a guy who worked out well. He looked pretty good in some of the drill I saw them doing, though he is definately NOT a 3-4 OLB.

I was wondering the same thing...
According to this, he's a pretty decent athlete.
And according to this he's 6-3, 267. That's a pretty decent sized guy. And that was before his junior (2005) season. I can't find the most recent season's stats or those from the combine.
All I could find from the combine is this, which lists the heaviest DE as Carriker at 296 lbs. and the 2 lightest guys at 249 lbs. so he's on the heavier end of the spectrum.
I'm sure after posting those numbers, we'll be hearing a lot more from him.

Okay, last one on this guy...
For those of you who saw any UT games, he was #39 making all those plays. This chart shows his season stats, not including the bowl game. 33 total tackles, 8 tackles for a loss (for a loss of 53 yards), 5 sacks for 45 yards, 3 passes broken up, 15 QB pressures, 1 "BLK" (I'm assuming blocked kick). Using the same chart, Crowder has better numbers but still not too bad.
When asked at the combine if he would mind moving to OLB in a 3-4 scheme, he said "Whoever drafts me, I'll go wherever they want."
Not a bad overall performance. Someone to watch in the later round I think.

For the record...
His board was put together prior to the combine, so this is an interesting take.
Just for grins, he also has his top 5 LBs (in his order): Jon Beason (Miami), Patrick Willis (Ole Miss), Lawrence Timmons (Florida State), Paul Posluszny (Penn State), David Harris (Michigan).
Willis and Harris are slated to be ILBs, and I think at least Harris will fall to the 2nd round. Jon Abbate (Wake) H.B Blades (Pitt) and Brandon Siler (Florida) are also interesting prospects that should be available in later rounds.
I have class in a few minutes, but I'll look at DBs later tonight, which is Mayock's specialty. (He was one in the NFL.)
