Week 3 NFC Power Rankings
Everyone's favorite arguments this side of Springer... And without any further ado:
- Seattle - Yes, they beat a floundering Giants team. Yes, they just lost Alexander. But for at least one last week, they're my number 1.
- Chicago - Very strong showing, beating a very solid Minnesota team on the road. This weekend's game against Seattle settles the arguement once and for all.
- Philly - Except for a hiccup against the Giants in the 4th quarter, this team would be crusing to a 3-0 start. Their schedule starts to toughen up after this weekend, so they'd b etter take advantage of the easy goings to start the year. Losing the game to NYG should help them the rest of the way.
- New Orleans - The new America's team. They beat a tough ATL team to end their Monday Night winless streak. Did I say beat? I mean dismantled. Their defense looked tough. I said if they showed up, I'd believe...
- Dallas - By not playing this weekend, they actually got better. Everyone who was ahead of them either lost or looked altogether bad. They have the terrible Titans before a showdown with Philly.
- Minnesota - Tough loss to a tough team. They looked good and in control for the better part of the game but this team needs to learn how to finish. If the defense keeps it up, this team could give Chicago a run for their money the next go round.
- Atlanta - Tough loss to the city of, I mean, team of New Orleans. They looked overwhelmed and underprepared. Their recievers couldn't get open at all. The usually sure handed TE Crumpler crumpled under pressure, dropping sure TD passes. The running game was contained. QB Vick looked like a guy running a high school offense. Bad special teams play, especially in protection. I look for them to rebound with a statement game next week.
- Carolina - They still haven't looked great, but a win's a win. Smith returned and the offense scored points. The defense didn't hold the anemic Tampa offense down, despite destroying Chris Simms' Spleen. This team needs to get on track in a hurry if they want to make some postseason noise.
- St. Louis - This is a team that needs to find itself. They won against a very good Denver team, lost to San Fran, then won against Arizona in a very weird game. Their winning, which is good, but they aren't consistent in any phase of the game this side of K Wilkens.
- Washington - They finally won. They finally had an offense that worked. Brunell set an NFL record for consecutive completions. But it was the Texans. Good luck against JAX, especially if they can't get anything going offensively.
- New York Giants - Last week they were on top of the world. This week, they can't even be in the same room as their coach. This team is headed for problems, and that's even before they start playing a game. They need one, big group hug. Or maybe instead of meetings, they can have group therapy sessions.
- Arizona - This team needs an offensive identity. They can't throw the ball successively and they give up on the run before halftime. The defense needs someone to step up and become a playmaker. I don't think QB Leinart is the solution, but he can't do worse than Warner has been.
- San Fran - Showed heart against Philly, but little else. Gore is the only player to show up every week for them. The defense is painful to watch. This team needs to grow up, no one more than QB Smith.
- Green Bay - They won. QB Farve threw for 340 yards and celebrated like the Farve of 10 years ago. The defense did enough to win, though not anything spectacular. Enjoy this one, there are not too many more on the horizon for this team.
- Tampa Bay - Their outstanding player this past weekend was a guy who doesn't have a spleen anymore. The defense played like they were the ones hurting. That game was theirs to win but they let Carolina back in to it. I hope QB Gradkowski is ready, because this team can no longer rely on their Defense to win them games.
And the Week 3 "Exercise in Futility" Worst Team in the NFC Award goes to:
- Detroit - They lost, again. To Green Bay. This team is lost with no help in sight. Forget firing GM Millen, someone should up and shoot him. He makes Isiah Thomas look like a genius. Wait a minute... There's an idea: Millen should take over duties as coach and go down with the ship on the sidelines, instead of up in the box.
That's it for this edition. Tune in next week to see me screw up the rankings. And as always, let me know where I am wrong and where I should have ranked your favorite team...

I could justify
Any claim about Steve Smith's return affecting the ranking goes double time for a Redskins offense lacking Clinton Portis (and a defense lacking it's starting Cornerback).
I agree but...
The Panthers really do confuse me. One week they look like their on the verge of breaking out, the next they look like they took a vacation.
I think the same goes for St. Louis, though to a lesser extent. For putting up the numbers Bulger put up this past weekend, where are the points? Stephen Jackson is the most under/misused player this side of Edge.
I feel the Redskins still have room to improve, especially with the health issues, whereas Carolina is getting healthy and not improving that much. The Redskins torched the last place defensive team. So what? The Panthers had to battle for a win for the third week in a row, which shows character.
I guess what I'm saying is that all things equal, I feel the Panthers are better at this point but the Redskins have an opportunity to improve drastically. If both teams win this weekend, you can bet the Redskins are ahead of the Panthers. And that would have less to do with opponents (WAS has the formidable JAX and Carolina has the upstart NO) than it would about overall team quality.
I feel like I rambling and not making sense.
Also...
If that helps to clairify my point at all...
Even factoring
If you really think a week 1 loss to Atlanta is higher than a week 2 loss to Dallas, than you should put Atlanta above Dallas in your ranking.
Not necessarily...
I think home field advantage during the regular season is over-rated, except in the case of two equally matched teams, which was obviously not the case in either the DAL-WAS game nor the ATL-CAR game.
I would also add that the Redskins lost (convincingly) and the lack of that modifier suggests they lost a close game, which it was not to anyone who watched. If "that player" makes half his catches, which a healthy reciever with half his talent would, that would be an even bigger blowout. A lot of "what ifs" could be thrown around, but my point is that neither game was much of a game at all.
I agree
Taken holistically we have Carolina and Washington lost to Minnesota by similar margins. Carolina also lost convincingly to a team you think isn't as good as the Cowboys, at home. Carolina also barely beat a very bad team.
Washington lost convincingly to a team you think is better than Atlanta, on the road, convincingly. They also destroyed a very poor team.
In my opinion, they get the nod.
Never worry about being called a homer
Tampa Bay is only marginally better than Houston defensively, and they haven't had to face the likes of Indy. Not making any excuses for Tampa, just saying that struggling to beat one of the currently worse teams in the league is different than destroying one of the worse teams in the league. I don't know what the "character" means, nor do I think the Panthers had to battle for a close game in their week 1 loss to Atlanta.
I think a win this weekend should put the Redskins over the Panthers definitively, but I also think it has something to do with the teams they are playing. New Orleans showed a lot last night, but it's hard to label them a good team just yet. Jacksonville beat the number 6 team on your list, last year's Superbowl champions, and held the perennial best offense in the league to 21 points on the road. I think holding Indy to 21 points (while scoring 14) is at least as impressive as beating Green Bay and Cleveland.
I agree to a certain extent.
I was impressed from start to finish of that game, and though the Saints and your man-crush played out of their heads in that game, I think they are better than given credit for. Hell, even I doubted them after weeks 1 and 2 but I think that last night was a statement game. The ran into what was becoming a buzzsaw of a team and flat out stoned them cold. Even the ATL defense had no answers. The Falcons got beat in all 3 phases of the game, hands down. In my book, that makes the Saints a "good team," at least as far as this young season is concerned.
Head-to-head, I'd take JAX but that doesn't mean anything about the quality of team that NO has become. Might I remind you that St. Reggie and your man-crush have them in first in the NFC South, beating the only team within a game of them. After week 3, they are a good team.
Jesus dude...
Once again, right now Seattle. The winner this weekend is #1.
And I'm very sorry you lost fantasy last week.

Seattle/Chicago game is ugly

During the game
I want to say 2 things: losing Alexander hurt Seattle immensely. If he's there, it's actually a game and not a slaughter.
and 2... You were right. Seattle got destroyed. And yes, Chicago will be number 1 in my new rankings...
Unless Philly has a good night tomorrow. =P
