Around SBN: L'Equipe Claims He's Coming To Chelsea On Five Year Deal

Player Profile: Offensive Guard Adam Gettis

No offensive linemen lit up the combine quite like Iowa's Adam Gettis. The 6'2"1/2 293 pounder ran an unofficial 4.81 40, with an official time of 5.00. What's even more impressive was his 10 yard split of 1.65(best amongst all offensive linemen at the combine). He posted a 31.5 inch vertical, a 9.4 inch broad jump, a 4.65 short shuttle, and a 7.99 3-cone. Aside from stellar on-field drills, which showcased impressive change of direction, and explosion, Gettis was able to do work on the football field at Iowa, despite being overshadowed by teammates Riley Reiff and Markus Zusevics.

With Robert Griffin III The Redskins Bootleg Options Are Endless

We've heard so much over the past couple of months about how Robert Griffin III is a perfect fit for the Washington Redskins. His mobility and arm strength would appear to work nicely with the high amount of play-action bootlegs traditionally seen in a Mike Shanahan offense. But what exactly can we expect to see from the Redskins from their bootleg game?

This post builds somewhat on the post I did earlier this week about Pierre Garcon playing the X receiver. You guys in the comments and on twitter asked me to build on some of the things the Redskins could do on play-action bootlegs. So here's a look at some of the routes you could see from the Redskins.

First we'll start with the fullback.

Fb_medium

This is pretty much the standard bootleg play you'll see from a fullback. It's set up to look like a run, but the fullback slips back across the offensive line and out into the flat. From there, he can continue to run into the flat, or break up the field slightly. Either way, he's likely to run free as the linebacker assigned to him buys play-action. The upside of this route is that it will likely always be an option. However, it will rarely pick up more than five or so yards unless the fullback can break tackles (which credit to Darrel Young, he can).

More after the jump.

Daily Slop : Redskins Are Defendants in Collusion Lawsuit, For Now; Rookie Alfred Morris is an 'Old School' Back

The Redskins and Cowboys are defendants in the players’ union’s collusion lawsuit against the league, even after they were punished by the league for their spending on players.

How the Redskins can survive the 2013 Cap Penalty | Fanspeak Washington Redskins Blog
Yesterday I broke down what the cap penalty could mean for the Redskins in 2013. Looking at the numbers it became clear that the Redskins are going to have to get pretty creative to get out of this cap mess. I thought it would be good to look at what the Redskins might need to do to get under the cap.

Redskins' Griffin will wear Roman numerals - NFC East Blog - ESPN
If you've seen film from the Washington Redskins' offseason practices, you've no doubt noticed that rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III is wearing "GRIFFIN III" on the back of his jersey. You've likely not thought much about it, since that's what he wore on the back of his jersey in college. But Uni Watch tells us not only that Griffin will wear the name and numerals during the season, but that prior to this year, that would not have been permitted under NFL rules:

Redskins email report: Morris impressed former coach with toughness | Washington Examiner

David Serna, who spent seven seasons as Florida Atlantic’s running backs coach, remembers recruiting Alfred Morris out of high school. He remembers Morris' high school coach telling him, "If he ain't good enough for you, you'll never find anyone good enough for you." And Serna remembers thinking if Morris had been an inch taller or slightly faster, Florida Atlantic would have had no shot at him.

Handicapping the 2012 NFL Win Total Odds

Vegas released odds on the win totals for each NFL team this year. I made three bets last year in July that paid off pretty well. I bet the under on the Colts and Redskins last year, both of which were winners. I generally like to place my bets closer to pre-season when the depth charts are more well-known, but we'll take some early shots here:

Washington Redskins: 6.5 (Over: even, Under: -130)
Dallas Cowboys: 8.5 (Over: -125, Under: -105)
New York Giants: 9.5 (Over: -110, Under: -120)
Philadelphia Eagles: 10 (Over: -135, Under: +105)
(..rest of the teams after the jump...)

  • Even with Hakeem Nicks breaking his foot (Tom Coughlin said "it'll be close" if he returns week one), I still like the over for the Giants. A smart Quarterback and a top ranked defense.
  • The under for the Jets intrigues me because I think the Tebow drama will be a major distraction all year, and we know very well in Washington how that type of negative media affects a team.

Making the Cut: Sorting Out the Redskins Secondary Part 2

LANDOVER, MD - DECEMBER 11: DeJon Gomes #24 of the Washington Redskins breaks up a pass intended for Rob Gronkowski #87 of the New England Patriots at FedExField on December 11, 2011 in Landover, Maryland. (Photo by Patrick McDermott/Getty Images)

The other day I looked at the cornerback position, today I'll look at who might make the Redskins roster at the safety position. Again this is a very early look and a lot can change, but this is a look where things stand as of now. Remember Cedric Griffin and Kevin Barnes are likely viewed as corners first, despite having some versatility to play FS. They could enter the mix, but we'll look at the other options. Typically teams only keep 4 safeties so we'll consider that the magic number.

Brandon Merriweather: The former Miami product who was a first round pick of the New England Patriots, has two Pro Bowls to his name. Unfortunately since then two top defensive coaches (Bill Belicheck and Lovie Smith), has found his erratic play to do more harm than good, and decided to bench Merriweather. From a talent standpoint Merriweather could be a top safety, unfortunately he's shown a severe lack of discipline which has allowed him to get burned a number of times. His lack of discipline has also been a problem off the field, that has led to a number of incidents. Those off the field problems have already followed him to Washington, where he was arrested for a DUI last month. Theoretically Merriweather should be interchangeable at FS and SS, but his coverage skills don't match up with his athletic ability, making him solely a SS. He has the best potential of any safety and is under contract for 2013. He's likely to be pretty assured a spot, but his track record and off the field incidents could force a different outcome.

How the Salary Cap Penalty will effect the Redskins | Fanspeak Washington Redskins Blog
It looks like for the most part the Redskins will survive their cap penalty in 2012, but that shouldn’t be too surprising as the Redskins headed into the offseason with a large chunk of cap room. All they lost this offseason was a portion of their cap space. Next season though could be a different story and I wanted to look and see what the Redskins cap situation looked like next year.

Mara's smug words may come back to haunt him, NFL - Rich Tandler's Real Redskins
Two months ago at the NFL owners meetings in Florida, New York Giants owner John Mara, who was born naked into this world and had to inherit everything he has, spoke out in support of the salary cap penalties the league had imposed on the Redskins and Cowboys about two weeks earlier.
