Tim Hightower Re-Signs With The Redskins

It sounds like running back Tim Hightower has re-signed with the Washington Redskins. We've yet to receive official confirmation, but Hightower announced the news via his twitter account.

I'm really glad he's back. Assuming he's over the knee injury, granted, that is a big assumption, he's only 25 years old. He has plenty of tread on the tires and fits the system very well. One of his most valuable assets that he brings to the team is his blocking ability, which could be a huge help for new quarterback Robert Griffin III in year one and beyond.

Chris Wilson Returns to the Redskins

A former Redskin will be coming back home after a season away from the team, Chris Wilson. Wilson came to the Redskins via the Canadian Football League, where he played for the BC Lions, in 2007. Wilson was mainly a defensive end in his time in DC and his rookie year was by far his best, he had 4 sacks and 13 tackles that year in some spot duty. He was also a valuable special teams contributor until his contract expired after the 2010 season. Img2400-m_medium

Wilson most recently went to camp with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2011 but was cut on the last day, Sepetember 2. He is likely just training camp fodder at this point, but it is good to see Chris back. When Haslett took over the defense Wilson switched from defensive end to outside linebacker. Wilson played his college ball at Northwood University in Michigan and has also remained very active in the DC community.

Redskins Sign Tanard Jackson

Photo

We had a post the other day outlining why Tanard Jackson would be a logical pick up for the Redskins when he was cut by the Buccaneers for failing a physical. Well... it seems as if the Redskins agreed with our logic and Jackson will be reunited with his old head coach Raheem Morris.

Jackson has spent his whole five year NFL career in Tampa where he was a 4th round pick in 2007. He was a starter for the Bucs since Day 1, but has been plagued by injuries the past two years. Jackson enters a safety competition that is set to feature Reed Doughty, DeJon Gomes, Madieu Williams, Brandon Meriweather, and possibly Cedric Griffin.

Redskins Sign Leigh Torrence

The Redskins have added yet another defensive back this afternoon in Leigh Torrence. Torrence, an Atlanta native, was an undrafted free agent signing out of Stanford for the Packers in 2005. Torrence has seen playing time for the Falcons in '05 and joined the Redskins in 2007 where he appeared in 25 games over two seasons. Torrence then went to the Saints where he has spent the last four seasons.

Torrence is now 30 and never started a game for the Saints. He did score his first career touchdown on a 42 yard interception in a 62-7 beat down of the Colts this year.

He has been praised for his work in the community, most notably with the Sojourner Truth Academy in New Orleans.

Madieu Williams Joins Redskins

Williams played high school ball at DuVal in Lanham, Maryland and played his college football at both Towson and Maryland. He joins a safety battle that will also involve Reed Doughty, DeJon Gomes, Cedric Griffin, Brandon Meriweather, and others.

Dan Graziano touched on how Williams could help the Skins:

Williams isn't a perfect solution, but there aren't many of those at this point on the market. The Redskins cut O.J. Atogwe and lost LaRon Landry to free agency, so they're working to replace both of last year's starting safeties. They signed Brandon Meriweather and cornerback Cedric Griffin, who could be used at safety, but neither of those players fits the "center fielder" mold that would solidify the back end of their pass defense.

Tanard Jackson Cut: Does Logic Say He'll be a Skin?

You have to think the Redskins will pursue Jackson despite the injury woes. Tanard Jackson not only has ties to secondary coach Raheem Morris but also to the area. Jackson is a Silver Spring native who played his high school ball at Bullis in Potomac. Jackson was a five year starter for the Buccaneers straight out of Syracuse.

His injuries could lend to a very low cost, low risk, high reward contract.

Madieu Williams Set to Visit Redskins

Photo

According to ESPN980 free agent safety Madieu Williams will visit Ashburn today.

Williams is the reigning 2011 NFL Man of the Year and most recently played for the 49ers. The Sierre Leone native played at both Towson and Maryland, and was drafted in the second round in 2004 by the Cincinnati Bengals. He played his high school ball at DuVal High School in Lanham, Maryland. Williams is currently 30.

NFL Free Agency: Two Weeks Down, Redskins Still Have Holes To Fill

The Redskins have made some ground in the last two weeks of Free Agency. There are still holes that need be filled, however. Here's a look at what we've done, and what has yet to be addressed.

Inside Linebacker - Unaddressed

As Free Agency rolls on (under cover, apparently), London Fletcher remains on the board. This market has been very slow for linebackers in general. Whether it's the cap penalties hurting the negotiations is unknown.

Perry Riley is the only ILB currently on the Redskins roster with the capability (somewhat) of starting.

Notables still on the Market: London Fletcher, David Hawthorne, Bradie James, and James Ferrier

Safety -Signed Brandon Meriweather, Cedric Griffin

With the signing of Meriweather and Griffin, I am a little more at peace. I'm still not convinced that the position is complete, though.

The Redskins lost SS LaRon Landry to the Jets, and released FS Oshiomogho Atogwe. Both actions hardly abhorred by fans.

Currently, the Redskins roster holds Meriweather, Doughty, Gomes, Griffin, Barnes (Played some safety in 2010) at the safety position (SS/FS). Meriweather and Doughty are the only two listed as safeties. All others are listed as defensive backs.
