NFL Draft 2012

Redskins Sign 7th Round Picks Bernstine, Crawford

The Washington Redskins have officially announced that they have agreed to contracts with their two seventh round picks in the recent draft, Jordan Bernstine and Richard Crawford (I nearly typed Jordan Crawford... dammit Wizards)

Cornerback Crawford was the 213th overall pick, while safety Bernstine (who Ronnie recently interviewed) was taken four picks later, 217th overall.

That's two down for the Redskins, seven more rookies to sign.

Which O-Line Draft Pick Will Contribute in '12?

Photo

The Redskins added three offensive linemen to the fray this past weekend by grabbing Josh LeRibeus, Adam Gettis, and Tom Compton. We have all heard these three players' "stories" by now so the question is...who has the best chance of starting in 2012?

I don't expect any of these guys being penciled in Week 1, but you never know. Kory Lichtensteiger's health is still an unknown so LeReibeus and Gettis certainly have an opportunity to shoot up the depth charts. You have to think that beyond Lichtensteiger that Maurice Hurt and Chris Chester will still be in their way to a starting role also.

Compton, a FCS stud, has an interesting opportunity in front of him. We have two shaky starting tackles right now, for two very different reasons. Jammal Brown's health is almost always in question and Trent Williams sobriety is also a question mark. Compton will have to show himself as a more capable back up than Willie Smith, James Lee, Tyler Polumbus, and others this preseason.

The good thing is the Redskins have a lot of youthful developmental opportunities this offseason. Hopefully more than one of these prospects will flourish in the burgundy and gold.

Redskins Draft Picks 2012: CB Jordan Bernstine Picked By Washington In Seventh Round

The Washington Redskins wrapped up the 2012 NFL Draft Saturday afternoon by selecting Iowa cornerback Jordan Bernstine. The Redskins have some question marks with LaRon Landry walking and Cedric Griffin potentially a corner or safety option. The additions of Bernstine and Richard Crawford in the seventh round provide guys who can add some competition in camp. Whether they make the roster remains to be seen, but with seventh round picks, any production is a good thing.

According to SI.com, Jordan Bernstine is tough and explosive, but is stiff and can struggle locating the pass in the air. At the same time, he is a solid run defender who can take good angles in pursuit and has solid straight line speed.

With the draft now a wrap for Washington, their final haul includes the following:

1 (2) - QB Robert Griffin III, Baylor
3 (71) - OG Josh LeRibeus, SMU
4 (102) - QB Kirk Cousins, Michigan State
4 (119) - OLB Keenan Robinson, Texas
5 (141) - OG Adam Gettis, Iowa
6 (173) - RB Alfred Morris, Florida Atlantic
6 (193) - OT Tom Compton, South Dakota
7 (213) - DB Richard Crawford, SMU
7 (217) - CB Jordan Bernstine, Iowa

Redskins Draft Picks 2012: Washington Selects Cornerback Richard Crawford At No. 213 Overall

Cornerback Richard Crawford

Using one of their picks in the seventh round of the 2012 NFL draft (number 213 overall), the Washington Redskins selected defensive back Richard Crawford from Southern Methodist University. Crawford played corner for the Mustangs but was also well known for his punt return skills.

He stands 5' 10" and weighs 190 pounds, at his pro day he ran a 4.52 40 yard dash along with a 39 and 1/2 inch broad jump, plus 14 reps on the bench press. He was selected as an All-Conference USA first team player. He averaged 12.7 yards per punt return, he returned one for 92 yards and a touchdown, which is the second longest return in conference history. He finished the 2011 season with 42 tackles, two and a half tackles for loss, two interceptions, 10 pass breakups and a forced fumble. Crawford looks to be a project corner who could help on special teams.

Redskins Draft Picks 2012: OT Thomas Compton Picked By Washington In Sixth Round

The Washington Redskins have made South Dakota offensive tackle their seventh pick of the 2012 NFL Draft. This marks the third offensive lineman the Redskins have added through the draft. Previously they added guards Adam Gettis and Josh LeRibeus. They moved down the line with this addition.

The 6'5", 311 pound senior is knocked for the level of competition in the Missouri Valley Conference, but he brings NFL size and athleticism. He could potentially move to a variety of spots on the line and thus will provide some more competition on a line that struggled in 2011. He remains a bit stiff and has to improve his footwork, and there are some question marks about his lateral quickness. However, some effective coaching could help develop Compton into something resembling a solid NFL offensive lineman.

The Redskins have two picks left, both in the seventh round - No. 213 and No. 217.

Redskins Draft Picks 2012: Washington Selects Running Back Alfred Morris At No. 173 Overall

Florida Atlantic running back Alfred Morris

With the third pick in the sixth round (#173 overall), the Washington Redskins drafted running back Alfred Morris from Florida Atlantic University. Morris has a strong lower body and runs well in tight spaces. As a between the tackles guy he hits the hole well and can make guys miss. He's also a very willing blocker and can help in pass protection. Morris was known as vocal leader with high character.

What Morris is not is a speed guy, he doesn't really have a second gear to leave defenders in his wake. Ball security can be a problem at times, something he'll need to work on at the next level. He's also not known as a pass receiver. He played in the Sun Belt conference so the Redskins will have to see how he does leaping from a lesser conference up to the NFL level. Mike Shanahan has a reputation for turning running backs into big-time producers, we'll see what he can do with Alfred Morris.

Redskins Draft Picks 2012: Washington Selects Iowa OG Adam Gettis At No. 141 Overall

The Washington Redskins entered the draft with question marks surrounding their offensive line, and they have taken steps to begin shoring up the unit through the first five rounds. A day after selecting SMU guard Josh LeRibeus in the third round, the Redskins used pick No. 141 in the fifth round to select Iowa guard Adam Gettis. The team could still use some tackles, but solidifying the interior of the line is a step in the right direction.

Gettis appears to be a guy who has a chance to be a starter, but might end up being a strong reserve interior lineman. He is a bit undersized and needs to work on getting a bit more physical. He has solid footwork who can seal off defenders, which are important skills to have coming out of college. He can always add the needed additional weight and work on his strength, but a strong core of fundamentals will be a big boost.
