Redskins Recaps

Recap of Redskins 2011 Season in Picture Form

For those that follow @HogsHaven on twitter, you're already aware that I change my profile picture each week based on a key moment of the game (usually comical). Well, here they all are for 2011 (click each picture to enlarge). Here's the 2010 post if you feel like reliving Shanny's first year. Special thanks to DC Sports Bog and his Best/Worst posts for helping remember some of the painful story lines.

Redskins Drop the Ball...Literally.

I'll avoid the obvious Carlos Rogers joke.

For those that attended the Redskins Patriots game yesterday, it was a brutal game to deal with emotionally, and I don't mean from play on the field. Patriots fans absolutely dominated Fedex Field. I've never considered Patriots fans to be obnoxious, but they were everything including that and more. Shoving Tom Brady jeers in my face and waving their Red Sox hats like they were Powerball winners. That's great ass-clown. We're putting up 27 points on your poopy defense with Rex Grossman and our backup offense.

The most disturbing fan of the game was the guy one section over from me in an Orakpo jersey and Red Sox hat. Ooooo-k. Moving along, the absolute highlight of my day is I'm waiting inline at Johnny Rockets when I see a Fedex Field worker kid, no more than 16 years old, this spinly white kid, slowly pushing an empty flatbed cart (like you get at Costco) through the crowded lines directly in front of me. At that exact moment, this 6'4, 50-year old bloke wearing insignia Boston clothes, which surely cost more than three of my paychecks combined, and carrying a heaping Johnny Rockets tray that would surely make Dan Snyder smile, walk shin right into it. "FAAACK!!!" He catches himself and in a full, thick, Boston accent with a stare at the kid that would intimidate most, "Whaat the faaack es this doin heyrrr?!!? Faack!!!" Ken, my two friends, and I all hold our faces and look at the kid who absolutely BUSTS out laughing. The old guy fires back, "Ya theenk this es fackin funny do ya????!!!" steam blowing out of his ears. I almost drop to a knee I'm laughing so hard and the kid without missing a beat continues to push the cart right past the guy still dying laughing. Behind me I hear "Faaack!!!" yells slowly fade as he returns back to his portal. Ah, the little things.

As for the game...

Redskins Proved Today More than Just the Kick was Right

LANDOVER, MD - NOVEMBER 20: Graham Gano #4 and Sav Rocca #6 of the Washington Redskins watch as a field goal attempt by Gano misses in overtime against the Dallas Cowboys at FedEx Field on November 20, 2011 in Landover, Maryland. (Photo by Scott Cunningham/Getty Images)

OK, so just when we've all but given up on the Redskins, they reel us back in with a first half lead, send the Cowboys to overtime....and find a way to lose. I think most Redskins fans can be proud our team played with heart despite a five game losing streak. I mean, I got to sing Hail to the Redskins THREE times today. That was a joy, but the key mistakes were gut wrenching.

Graham Gano had this to say:

Missed it. That's it. No excuses," said the second-year pro, who pushed the kick wide right. "Just missed it. It felt good, but obviously wasn't."

When we scored that touchdown at the end of the game, I turned to Ken and said, "We should go for 2. We're not a playoff team, let's win this now. We don't want Romo with the ball in OT. We can get 2 yards."

Of course, Shanny preferred to go to OT and the rest is history. Even when the Redskins drove to the 40 I think everyone was saying we cannot settle for a 50+ yard FG. Most kickers are 50% from there, and we need to get to at least the 30. Again, the Redskins looked conservative here and forced Gano into a long kick.

As for Trent Williams, Grant Paulsen reported:

Trent Williams: "It's the MCL. I don't think it's too serious... ACL is fine.... right now it's just pain."

MRI is tomorrow. Fingers crossed. More notes including DHall's potent comments after the jump:

Redskins/Texans Analysis: Questions and Answers, Week 2

LANDOVER - SEPTEMBER 19: Santana looks like the Moss of old -- this is a good thing. (Photo by Larry French/Getty Images)

Everyone catch their breath yet?

Now that the dust has settled, it's time to examine exactly what happened in the NFL season's most thrilling game to date. Sunday, the Redskins lost at home to the Houston Texans, a football team a week removed from the biggest win in its franchise's history over the Indianapolis Colts in Week One.

We learned a lot about our team, but a lot of questions remain going forward. Welcome to the first installment of a weekly/bi-weekly/whenever-I-can segment of Questions and Answers, and I thank you for reading.

Question 1: Can the Redskins run the football?

Clinton Portis has been acceptable, but far from explosive -- through two games he has only 96 yards on 31 carries, but he also racked up two touchdowns against Houston. Larry Johnson has been a non-factor, accumulating only two yards on five carries. Keiland Williams is mostly a pass-catching back, mostly used on third downs.

Kool-Aid Report: Redskins Are Doing Just Fine (Except for Kemoeatu)

Koolaid-ravens_mediumMan...even after living almost my entire life in DC, I'm simply still not used to the highs and lows Redskins fans bring each week. After the Bills game, it was "We have a great shot at winning the NFC East!!" to after the Ravens loss, "Cut Larry Johnson!!" and "We'll never win under Dan Snyder!" Take a deep breath everyone. Pre-season games are practices. Players who have never played together before are learning each other's nuances, and on top of that, a new system as well. Casey Rabach and Chris Cooley said as much post-game:

Rabach: "We had a day, maybe a day and half of game planning. We're just keeping it real basic."

Cooley:  "You have to look at it as a practice. We're pretty limited in what we're doing...It doesn't count. It's a building block."

Redskins Lose to Chargers; Win Better 2010 Draft Pick

The Redskins end their season just like it started...a loss on the road. I really don't know what to make of this Redskins team. With their jobs on the line, they lay another egg...this time against the 3rd stringers for the Chargers. As for the good news, based on a coin flip, the Redskins will have the 4th/5th draft pick in 2010, so we got that going for us...which is nice. Does anyone think the Redskins will win the coin toss? Not me. Right now it stands:

  1. St. Louis Rams
  2. Detroit Lions
  3. Tampa Bay Bucs
  4. Washington Redskins/Chiefs
  5. KC Chiefs/Redskins

You'd think the Redskins would win since the Chiefs beat the Redskins this year, but no such luck.

As for the current roster, it's hard for me to say what players should stay or go from the previous three weeks. Based solely on the ridiculousness of their contracts, Randle El and Portis should be cut. Comcast Post Game Live brought up a great stat: Only 2 of the current 6 Pro Bowl quarterbacks are top 10 draft picks (Philip Rivers and Peyton Manning). Most of the others are 2nd round picks. It's crystal clear the Redskins must go OL with their first pick.

Recap: Redskins Limp to End of Season with Cowboys Drubbing; Worst Decade Ever

It is cruel to the players, coaches, and fans to allow Zorn to continue to be the head coach of this team. An interim coach should have been put in weeks ago, yet all of us have to endure this joke of a management. We all know Zorn was in over his head from the start, but this is like watching a cat that has been run over by a car clinging for life. Someone please put this thing out of it's misery.

Joe Gibbs was in attendance last night to pay his respect for the late George Michael. Why not bring him out of the box and put a headset on him at half? The fans deserve something better than the coaching I witnessed last night.

Punting the ball with 5 minutes left in the game down 17. Really coach?

Not kicking the field goal to avoid the shut out? Really coach? I guess you're OK with being the only Redskins skipper in the 50-year history of this rivalry to get shutout by the Cowboys.  Hip-hip-HOORAY!

The players have their jobs to play for, but how can you evaluate talent when you have a coach that has lost the locker room? All of his recent gambles have failed miserably, and I can't think of anyone who believes in Zorn at this point.

Haynesworth and Ken Harvey (from my talk with him last week) both made good points: It's not fair to a player to label him a bust if he is being used incorrectly. I don't think Jesus could accurately evaluate this squad. Mr. Snyder ended the decade just like he started it: A losing team with a carousel of coaches and multiple top-priced free agents.

John Riggins and Zorn's incompetency helped expose the front office problems, but this is not a ship that will be righted in the next couple years.

Recap: Redskins Lose in Pathetic Fashion; They Might Be Giants

Well that was fun wasn't it? With 4 minutes left in the 2nd half sitting in section 306, I looked over to Ken and said, "I'm out." I walked the 1-mile to the Metro and was home by the end of the 3rd quarter. As the scores of other people on the Metro said,

"I don't need 50 Giants fans screaming at me my team sucks...I already know this. I've been watching them all year."

I've dealt with opposing fans all year but last night was a new level. I would say our section was easily 3/4ths Giants fans. No only that, I counted at least 15 Cowboy jerseys. One being directly behind me and taunting the whole game. What comeback besides a fist do I have down 24-0? The upper deck was at most 60% full and the usual roar on 3rd down when the defense was on the field was laughable.

As for the game, what a let down. It's clear the Cerrato firing and snow storm were a distraction. Can someone answer me this question....why do the Redskins play worse when DeAngelo Hall and Haynesworth are in the game? Haynesworth was on one knee all but 2 plays of the Giants game tone setting first drive, and DeAngelo Hall must have spent his past 3 weeks learning how to tackle from Miley Cyrus. These two certainly aren't the scapegoats. I didn't see a single Redskin show up last night.

It does make sense though. Look at the teams the Redskins have beat: Rams, Bucs, Raiders, and the Denver [Chris] Sims. Shame on us for thinking we could win this game. We're just one free agent away right?

As for the fake punt...
