Redskins Previews

A Video Collection of Eagles Fans Crying & Cursing

This one was posted November, 14, 2011, the day after the Eagles lost to the Arizona Cardinals...at home. This still image is the exact opposite of his attitude in this video.

This next one is a favorite of mine. He seems to be an intelligent fan, but then mentions maybe McNabb is a better option. Angry Greg became a regular post-game CSN Philly guest, so there are many more vidoes of him going off. Earlier videos Angry Greg said they need to can Andy Reid now, and in his most recent ones, he praises him. Ah yes, Eagles fans.

Previewing Redskins at Giants Game with Big Blue View

Bigblueview_medium

It's that time for the weekly Q&A. Up this week is Ed Valentine from SB Nation's Giants website, Big Blue View.

1.) The Giants D is obviously a sore spot. What quick fixes can they make this year to right that ship and make a legit playoff push? (or are you going the Patriots route?)

Ed: Well, if you have been reading Big Blue View all week you know that the biggest issue has been communication, especially in the secondary. I don't know if it is defensive coordinator Perry Fewell's fault or what, but too many big plays are happening because some guys are getting the calls and some aren't. The other thing that would make a huge difference, but isn't going to happen, is for Justin Tuck to be healthy. He's played much of the season with one arm due to neck/shoulder issues, had a groin injury, an ankle injury and now will try to play Sunday on basically one foot due to a toe injury.

2.) If you were Jim Haslett game planning against the Giants' offense, what schemes would you use to confuse Eli and what personnel would you attack as weak links?

Patriots @ Redskins Media Link Roundup

Redskins secondary braces for Patriots WR Wes Welker - The Insider
Haslett: "He’s a remarkable receiver. Obviously, that’s the go-to guy," Haslett says. "He’s got a lot of catches. He’s got an unbelievable amount of yards. He finds ways to get open. He’s herky-jerky. I mean he’s all over the place. He’s hard to put your hands on. He’s fun to watch if you’re not coaching against him this week, but he is remarkable the way he gets open. He pushes off and he runs routes. He’s probably as good a route-runner as I’ve ever seen. He’s a really good player to watch."

Redskins, Marines hosting Toys for Tots drive Sunday at FedEx Field - The Insider
The Redskins on Sunday will host their annual Touchdown for Tots Toy Drive at FedEx Field.

Game Preview Jets at Redskins with Gang Green Nation

Gangreen-xlarge_medium

Our weekly Q&A with our SB Nation opponent. Thanks to John from Gang Green Nation:

1.) DHall said they believe that Sanchez can be pressured into mistakes. "He doesn't take as many chances as much as he just gets confused some times," Hall says. "A lot of times he just comes out and stares a receiver down, tries to throw him the ball. He puts it on those guys to make plays. They haven't made as many plays this year as they have in previous years."

Does that seem to be most teams game plan? Stack the box and force Sanchez to throw it? (as of last year he was a better QB vs the blitz statistically)

Gang Green Nation: I think Hall is right. A disturbing number of Sanchez's errors have been unforced. They just come from not reading coverages properly or staring down a receiver. Teams haven't really had to load the box against the Jets because they are throwing it more than they have in recent years. The personnel on the offensive line is different so they would be hard pressed to have the success running they did from 2008-2010. They are really a throw first team now, and that has not worked out.

2.) Do you regret letting Brad Smith walk?

I don't think the Jets have missed Brad Smith. Joe McKnight has been more productive as a return man. That has been a trend with the Jets. Special teams coach Mike Westhoff has some of the best blocking schemes in the game. The Jets have lost other good return men the past decade like Chad Morton, Justin Miller, and Leon Washington, and the return game seems to never miss a beat. They just plug in another fast guy.

Smith did other things. He was an excellent special teams coverage guy, but that has also been very good for the Jets this year. The Jets do not run the Wildcat much, but I think they could stick a guy like McKnight in that role and do it well. It seems more like a choice to go away from it.

Smith is a useful spare part, but you can find somebody to do everything he does for a lot cheaper than the $3.75 million salary he got.

3.) What's the fan sentiment on Sanchez? (Has he peaked? Would you rather have Tebow if a swap trade was hypothetically at end of year and Jets missed playoffs?)

Previewing Redskins vs Dolphins with The Phinsider

Phinsider_medium

Special thanks to Kevin, aka Mosul_Dolfan, the lead Editor of the SB Nation Dolphins' site, The Phinsider, for fighting through the flu to get his responses back.

1.) Reggie Bush seems to be catching fire these last two weeks. Did the Kim K Kris Jeffries divorce get him going or was their a schematic change to game planning? I see he's only averaging about 4 receptions a game? Is he being used more 1-dimensional?
I think the Dolphins have finally figured out how to use Bush, and Bush has finally figured out how he fits with Miami. We have seen more outside runs, jet sweep type of plays for him. That has loosened up the middle, then he can do something between the tackles. Before, it was just slam him between the tackles, and hope he can break something. He hasn't been as involved in the passing game as most fans would like, but if he is getting near 100 yards rushing, we can't really complain either.
2.) So the Fins passing D is horrible. Last in INTs, 3rd last in QB Rating allowed (98.8) yet the D has 20 sacks. Is there a simple model that every team has had success throwing? ie screens, slants, go routes?
I wish I could tell you it was one specific thing that is causing the problem. Starting cornerback Vontae Davis has been struggling with a hamstring injury all year, so that's part of it - and the Dolphins are starting either second year, developmental corner Nolan Carroll or rookie Jimmy Wilson if Davis is out. Then, like the past few years, the Dolphins cannot cover a tight end. Inside linebacker Kevin Burnett was supposed to come in, replace Channing Crowder, and solve the tight end coverage problem. The last couple of weeks, he has started to fit into the defense better, and cover better, but it's still the biggest weakness of a weak pass defense.

3.) Before the KC game, Matt Moore had 9 sacks, 2 fumbles, and 1 INT. What improved...or is KC that bad?

Preview: Packers Stats So Far Begs the Question 'Who Cut the Cheese'?

What's a Redskins/Packers preview without a picture of Vince Lombardi in Redskins gear??

I just got off a phone interview talking Green Bay Packers with the Pulse Network, so let's preview this thing here. So far the 3-1 Green Bay Packers have played: @Eagles (27-20 Win), Bills (34-7 Win), @Bears (20-17 Loss), and the Lions (28-26 squeaker Win). As Ken mentioned in his post, there really hasn't been a dominant team throughout the first four weeks. The Colts, Saints, and Pats have all stumbled through their early schedule. The Packers, heavy Super Bowl favorites, have eeked through their wins, but have done so with injuries and poor discipline.  What are some weaknesses that stand out Mike Shanahan surely notices?

  • Starting Strong Safety Morgan Burnett is out for the year. They're still deciding who will step in though they do have some veterans.
  •  LT Chad Clifton's knees have been failing and 1st round draft Bryan Bryan Bulaga has seen some action (Hello, Orakpo). Thank God he did not sign with us.
  • The Packers' Special Teams have been atrocious.
      -   Bears Game: Gave up a punt return for a TD, had a FG blocked, kickoff out of bounds, 35-yard muffed punt that was returned 28 yards, and 2 ST penalties.
    -     Lions Game: 2 fumbles lost by kickoff returner Jordy Nelson and a botched punt by Tim Masthay, who dropped the snap and then kicked it 21 yards out of bounds.
  • Packers Defense is giving up a 31st ranked 5.2 rushing yards a carry.
  • Packers are ranked 19th in total offense (321.2 yards a game). Your Washington Redskins are ranked 17th (328.2).
  • Redskins rushing game is much better than the Packers. Packers average 3.9 yards a carry to the Redskins 4.3...and the Packers have yet to rush the ball once over 20 yards. (Obviously, this hurts with Portis out since he is our leading rusher on yards per carry).
  • Nick Barnett, who plays Rocky's role in LB for the Packers, injured his wrist and played in a cast vs Lions. His backup, Brandon Chillar, injured his shoulder seriously, which is important since he is one of their better pass coverage LBs.
  • Packers TD/INT ratio is 8-5, Redskins is 3-2. Carlos, get the pine tar out.
  • Packers rank 7th highest with 29 penalties
  • Redskins turnover ratio is +3 to the Packers -1.

Texans @ Redskins Preview with Stephanie Stradley of Houston Chronicle

As we do every week, we talk with an opposing team's blogger/editor to get some insight on the matchups for the upcoming game. Friend and fellow writer to SB Nation, Homer McFanboy, did a nice preview piece with Steph earlier this week, so I decided to ping her with my questions as well. Like us (in 2009 at least), she spends a lot of time at training camp but prefers to attend the games as a fan. She runs a blog called "Texans Chick" on the Houston Chronicle, and she gives some great insight on my questions regarding: Are there any weaknesses along the Texans OLine Haslett  can exploit, who was to blame on the Texans D for the over 400 yards passing given up, how rookie CB Kareem Jackson has fared (since most offensive schemes target rookie CBs), and why there is so much hatred between Cowboys and Texans fans?

Hogs Haven: The Cowboys had weakness along their OLine which the Redskins destroyed them on. Talk about the quality of your Tackles Duane Brown and Eric Winston and how they fare against elite defensive ends. Any one on that OL a weak link? (I see Schaub got sacked twice vs the Colts)

Stradley: The strength of the Texans offensive line is that they've been together as a group for a while, and they were specifically chosen for their agility and ability to fit the Texans predominantly zone blocking system. The system is more about players working together than it is about individual match-ups. Both Brown and Winston are former-tight ends who have a great deal of strength and athleticism.  According to the 2010 Football Outsiders Almanac, last year right tackle Winston had "the tackle's version of the perfect season: 16 starts, zero penalties, zero blown blocks."  Brown had a rough time his rookie season as a somewhat raw left tackle, but improved last season enough to protect for Matt Schaub's league-leading passing numbers. I'm guessing that the Texans commitment to the run this season will also help their passing game because teams won't be able to get in pass-rush only mode.

The pass protection for Schaub last season was pretty good given injuries to the line and the percentage of time they threw the ball.

With the tackles and center returning and healthy, really the off-season question on the line was mostly about the guard position.  The nice thing about that competition is that at the guard position, the backups have also have starts in the league.

Schaub was very good against the blitz, so the key to slowing the Texans is to disrupt his rhythm without selling out to do so, or only doing it on a very selective basis.  If the Texans offense gets into a rhythm, they are deadly.

Hogs Haven:  The Texans gave up a TON of passing yards to Peyton Manning (419). I didn't get a chance to watch the game. Why was that? (Peyton being Peyton? Serious flaws in your secondary? Weak pass rush allowing him time)? Hopefully all the above!
