[Note by CptChaosSidekick, 05/11/08 9:03 AM EDT ] Taking from wikipedia to help illustrate my point in reguards to the defense we use and issues as it relates to the Saftey postion.

Cover 2

In traditional Cover 2 schemes the free safety (FS) and strong safety (SS) have deep responsibilities, each guarding half of the field. The NFL's Kansas City Chiefs, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Buffalo Bills, Indianapolis Colts, Chicago Bears, and Detroit Lions run a variant of this defense called the Tampa 2.

Cover 2 can be run from any seven-man defensive fronts such as the 3-4 and the 4-3. (It is difficult to implement Cover 2 from an eight-in-the-box front, because the strong safety or someone replacing him is usually the eighth man.) Various "underneath" coverage played by cornerbacks and linebackers may also be implemented. For example, Cover 2 Man means 2 safeties have deep responsibility while the cornerbacks and linebackers follow their offensive assignment in one-on-one coverage. The NFL's San Diego Chargers inherited a base Cover 2 Man 3-4 from Wade Phillips. Cover 2 can also be paired with underneath zone schemes: Cover 2 Zone refers to 2 safeties with deep responsibility but now the CBs and LBs drop back into specific coverage zones where they defend passes only in their assigned area.

Teams that play Cover 2 shells usually subscribe to the "bend-but-don't-break" philosophy, preferring to keep offensive players in front of them for short gains while limiting long passes. This is in stark contrast to a more aggressive Cover 1 type scheme which leaves the offensive team's wide receivers in single man-to-man coverage with only one deep helper. By splitting the deep field between two defenders, the defense can drastically reduce the number of long gains.

The main weakness of the Cover 2 shell occurs in the middle of the field between the safeties. The safeties attempt to gain width upon the snap of the ball to cover any long passes to quick wide receivers down the sideline. This movement creates a natural hole between the safeties that can be attacked. By sending a receiver (usually a tight end) into the hole, the offense forces the safety to make a decision: play the vulnerable hole in the middle of the field or help out on the wide receiver. The quarterback reads the safety's decision and decides on the best matchup (i.e. which mismatch is better: TE vs S or WR vs CB).

Looks like this type of D goes hand in hand with a lot of things. Good CB cover skills and a much needed pass rush by the front 4. I wonder if we will implement a somewhat diffrent type of cover 2 under our new D cordinator.

I was listing to the radio, and heard some very intresting things concering postions on the field that might go the way of the Dodo bird. Here is my take. The NFL is a copy-cat league, and what everyone is doing on offence is spreading the field. Caues & effect..some postions are no longer considered as valuable as they once were.

Fullback: With teams lining up with three & four wideout's, the defence gets spread out and the need for a sledge hammor like Lorenzo Neal isn't as nessasry as it once was. Now FB is one of my favroite postions but it seems like the only ones in need are the ones with pass catching abilities ...except when in a goaline situation.

Strong Saftey: AKA roving LB that can cover. Players such as John Lynch, Roy Williams, and Adam Archulata are constantly findind themselves out of postion and getting burned. Teams are specifically targeting them due to their lack of range. So defensive packages simply take out the SS and rotate a CB in his place.

Inside/ Middle Linebacker: What I'm talking about here is the downward attacking LB, that more specifically stuffs the run. Case in point Dan Conner who was considered the 3rd best ILB in the draft but didn't get taken until the 3rd round. He came out of linbacker U with the alltime tackels record but teams again are worried by lack of range by their LB's causing a Reggie Bush type or even a more deadly threat to expose them.

So what do you all think? Is this a change that will have a lasting effect on the league?

From progridrionfootball.com, reported by mlive.com

Here's what new Redskins head coach Jim Zorn had to say about:-- Thomas still being there at 34th

"I think that was the biggest surprise for us. We were thinking, 'Okay, well we are giving that up to go down and get more choices in the second round,' and then when he was there even in the second round, we got excited about that."

-- What the Redskins like about Thomas

"His speed, his size. I like the fact that he can run after he catches the ball. He averaged 29.1 yards per kickoff return. He had 79 catches in 2007. He is a young player with a lot of upside. He doesn't have injury problems coming out of college. With Devin it is going to be how well he can pick up the offense, a whole different language, but his athleticism is right there and we just need to develop him."

My earliest memory of ever watching the Redskins was seeing Bronco John Elway throw a TD bomb to Ricky Nattel on Super Bowl XXII's first play...and my dads expletive rant right after. My grandmother was in attedance as well, and ironically used expletives to inform dad not to use expletives in front of me. What excitement for a six year old.

I said dad it's not over yet, and he looked at me in the way only a father could and said " very true"..to be followed by a bunch of football jargon that was way over my head. I remember watching Doug Williams drop back to pass, slip and fall in a way that made me yell "oh hell" after which I quickly looked at my dad expecting some sort of punishment. He leaned over and said " while watching football, it's ok to get lost in the moment" My grandmother shaking her head while rolling eyes silently in the background. Dad not being able to stomach the goings on retreated to the room with finger foods and adults. I stayed at the TV and witnessed the "quarter". After awhile my dad came back (it was a commercial) and asked what did he miss. I was so excited all I could do was speak in tongues and make silly gestures with my arms to illustrate what had happened. Even as a kid I could tell my dad looked at me with an expression that read…. Silly rabbit tricks are for kids. Commercial over, start of the 3rd quarter, Skins 35 Broncos 10, my dad dumbfounded. He's not the hardcore fan I am now but he knew what he missed and regrets it to this day.

Since that day I was hooked to the Burgundy and Gold. There have been many great memories since. The '91 season & super bowl. Comeback in Dallas, the 35-7 crushing of Dallas, and the blocked FG game against big D of which I was very lucky to see both those live at Fed Ex and many other great memories as well.

So how did you become addicted to Redskins football?

Positional reviews on who has a chance to make the 53 man roster, does not bode well for Tommy Davis and Cedrick Holt.

Rich Tandler on his blog:

Rich Tandler's Real Redskins

Provides a quick overview of the chances at various positions due to compitetion from rookies.

On Cedrick Holt:

Cedrick Holt and Eddie Jackson are probably camp fodder.

Looking at the competition I can understand the issue however Cedrick Holt has speed and is young. In 2006 he ran under 4.4 at NC pro day. He's been on two other NFL teams but has saw limited playing time, he does have a large hill to climb to make the roster.

On Tommy Davis:

Exactly, Tommy Davis was not even mentioned as part of the Defensive line. At his 2006 NC pro day Tommy Davis benched 225 pounds a team-high 34 times. He was with the NY giants in 2006, mostly on the practice squad but he has potential and could be a "diamond" found so we'll see. The draft did not hurt his opportunity to stay with the team at the least making the practice squad.

As far as what is expected, I'll just steal what I wrote before:

Think of it as your chance to be an online Flava Flav (best hype man ever) for your guy. And remember, [Your Player's name]'s future on this team rests on your shoulder. Good luck to you and your player.

Here's who I can remember has already taken a player. let me know if I overlooked someone or if you'd like to take a player off the board.

DBacksSkins - OL/DL Lorenzo Alexander [Note by TexSkins, 05/06/08 12:17 PM CDT ] I'm taking him off the board until I get confirmation.

matthiasstephan - DB Justin Tyron [Note by TexSkins, 05/09/08 10:03 AM CDT ]

It has been mentioned over and over how the Redskins do not focus on the Defensive line. How it appears that Daniel Snyders deep desire to Win is steeped in him trying to build a high powered offensive...maybe the philosphy has not worked but is it working?

I have been thinking of how the Redskin's owner given all of his faults has continued with a basic objective of fielding a Winning team. Countless articles and posts have been written on how Daniel Snyder tried to build a "fantasy Football team" with a real club, but ask yourself why... he just wanted to win. He hired a college coach who was winning year in and year out with a high powered offense, but ask yourself why...he just wanted to win.

The philosphy was not working; he recognized this as well when he was able to get the famed Joe Gibbs to return ask yourself why...he just wanted to win and he wanted to learn from a winner. Gibbs II was not totally succesful in that the Redskins did not consistently win, only making the playoffs twice, did not make it to the Superbowl or even the NFC championship game. It was very succesful, in a hall-of-fame coaching way, in changing the mindset that an NFL team must have top quality depth at all positions, ask yourself why...To be able to win it all! The focus continues to be on maintaining the Defense while trying to improve the offense. Is it working?

Rich Tandler, who writes for the Bleacher Report as well as has his own blog which is part of Hog Haven's Blogroll has taken my thoughts, not on purpose, and clearly wrote the direction I was taking, he even included facts.

Naysayers Focus on Process... by Rich Tandler at Bleacher Report

The main complaint about the Washington Redskins draft that is making the rounds is that they didn’t "address" the defensive line. It’s a complaint heard almost every year as the Redskins do generally ignore the D-line during the annual selection meeting.

Rich is reviewing the Draft this year on, and it's the issue which is highlighted in Texskins More Draft Reviews . He even pushes the Defensive Line being a part of draft in 2009. The Redskin's owner I believe has changed and he has learned but the focus is still the same, he wants to improve and develop a high powered offense.

A funny thing has happened during the time that the Redskins have been neglecting the defensive line on the last weekend in April. The defense has been pretty good. Not necessarily great, not dominant, but good enough to win with.

How good? Starting with the 2000 season, the Redskins defense has been ranked 7, 13, 21, 24, 5, 9, 27, and 11 in points allowed. In those eight years they’ve been in the top 10 three times and in the top half of the league a total of five times.

The Defense has been good enough, and while it's been preached to me since I was kid that Defenses win championships, the Redskins have had Defenses which were good enough to win a championship.

The Redskins have not been mediocre this decade because of their defense. They have struggled because they haven’t been able to score points. In that same eight-year span, from 2000-2007 their NFL rankings in point scored have been 24, 28, 25, 22, 31, 13, 20, and 18. They haven’t been in the top 10 once and they were in the bottom half of the league in seven of the eight years.

The Redskin's owner remains focused on building a Top-10 offense, even when the Redskins were drafting defensive backfield players with thier top picks during the Gibbs era they were also doing everything possible to "build" an offense which would score points. And while most of the NFL is looking to build a defense to mimic the Giants, the Redskins continue to focus on developing an offense.

We keep on hearing that the Redskins should go after beefing up the defensive line because that’s how the Giants won the Super Bowl. It’s a copycat league and trying to overwhelm the other team with a fierce pass rush is a solid strategy in any era.

The focus is not going to change with this owner, and in my opinion it should not because maintaining a top defense is important but the Redskins need a high powered offense to take the next step...the focus has not worked but I think it's working and so does Rich Tandler...Ask yourself?

It’s funny how just a couple of plays can turn the perception of how you should build your team. If the ball bounces out of David Tyree’s grasp when he hits the ground, you should build your team to score points and obliterate the opposition. He catches it and suddenly every team needs to find an Osi and a Strahan in the middle rounds.

Devin Thomas, Fred Davis, and Malcolm Kelly will not turn Jason Campbell into Tom Brady. The Redskins will not win their first 18 games in 2008 or set the all time scoring record. But in time, perhaps as early as midseason, Thomas, Davis, and Kelly will be helping the Redskins score more points. By then Campbell should find the trio providing much more appealing targets than were Keenan McCardell, Reche Caldwell, and Todd Yoder.

If that happens, the biggest problem the team has had over the past eight years will be on its way to being solved.

The following is an article about a national survey of the top teams for fans, taken from ESPN.com and printed in their magazine.

I have expressed my dissatisfaction with Fed Ex field in a post with Skin Patrol, and I agree with their article for the most part. I'm not big into survey's because I think they're flawed and I always wonder where/ how they come about their findings.

As I said I agree with the article when it talks about Fed Ex but I think they forgot to hit on some of our positives. There are 9 diffrent criteria the use to reach a ranking a top team. A few of these I think we do well in.

Ownership: We all can agree than Snyder has made mistakes, but it's of my opinion that there are few owners out there that want to win more. I hate all the high ticket prices, but those are not his fault. That blame goes to the rich who own multiple sets of tickets and go on eBay/ StubHub and rake it in.

Fan Relations: If based on gameday experiance, then I agree. Other then that, there's no Redskin fan I've ever heard being called a "bandwagoner". We are some of the smartest, and loyal fans in the league because all other types of crappy fans left a long time ago.

Durant Brooks.

Brooks put on a sensational show during Senior Bowl practices that NFL coaches are still raving about. Brooks stepped into his first punt of the day during Tuesday's session and sent it sailing. As the ball continued to fly past the other sideline and then over the head of Tampa Bay head coach Jon Gruden, Gruden simply looked up at the ball and asked, "Is that serious?"

His leg is made from nanotechnology.

The fact is, punts like those are not only serious for Brooks, but they have become routine. "Durant is a great talent," 49ers head coach Mike Nolan said. "I don't think teams are going to be able to sit around and hope he falls to them."

In your face draft experts.

He called himself - "the best in the crop," of punters, and, didn't think it unusual to be taken with the second pick in the sixth round. "I think the Redskins made an awesome choice," he said. Wow. Fair to say Frosty has some competition now.

How many players a team can have on it's active roster?

I know after the third game it's 65 and then it's 53 with 8 on the practice squad.

But I thought the maximum was 85, which the Redskins with current players 68 + 13 undrafted Free Agent Signings + 10 drafted players

Total on the team: 91 when I thought the maximum was 85 which had to be trimmed to 80 at the start of camp, but I'm not sure which is why I'm asking, if anyone knows the answer.

Bret Meyer, QB, Iowa State

[Note by Skin Patrol, 04/28/08 12:53 PM EDT ] The Redskin Report has more names, they are:

Matterral Richardson, CB, Arkansas

Kyle DeVan, C, Oregon State

Dorian Smith, DE, Oregon State

[Note by Skin Patrol, 04/28/08 12:28 PM EDT ] Promoted and will try and update as new information is made available. Coach Zorn mentioned that the team had signed, I think, something like 13 undrafted players. Anything reader(s) know of these particular players (perhaps if you're from those regions and catch local CFB) would be much appreciated. Here are the archives at Tomahawk Nation (our Florida State blog) on Shannon Boatman. Redskins offensive assistant Chris Meidt hails from St. Olaf College, which could explain the signing of Horace Grant. Edited ever so slightly, enjoy.

NFL Draft Bible has an up to date list by team of rookie free agent signings.

WASHINGTON
OG Kerry Brown, Appalachian State
OT Shannon Boatman, Florida State
SS Kevin Mitchell, Illinois
OT Devin Clark, New Mexico
WR Horace Grant, St. Olaf

OG Kerry Brown is the only player I could find a profile for. According to NFL Draftcountdown.com he's a "mid-round" projection so this could be a huge value find for a postion that's very much in need.

Just before I pulled into my house after work our coach made an appearance. So I stayed in my car to hear what he had to say to radio hosts Tim Green and Ross Tucker (former Skin)

These aren't exact quotes. On drafting a TE Fred Davis the hosts mentioned that some people didn't understand that pick, but before Zorn could answer they said that people don'r realize that you need 2 TE's in the West Coast offense not to mention in any. Zorn agreed and also mentioned if Cooley got hurt the Offense wouldn't miss a beat.

On drafting 2 WR's: again the hosts loved this saying that we're guaranteed that one of them is a playmaker from the get-go and it really helps Campbell. Zorn mentioned Devin Thomas' leaping ability but talked more about Kelly's speed "concern". He mentioned the importants of route running and that off the line, he's blazing. Also mentioned Steve Largent ran a 4.6 or something around there.

Chad Rinehart has another pick the host love, primarily for value and versitility. He manned the G/T postions at N. Iowa and according to the Insider will be taking some snaps (literily) at the C postion.

They did bring up the lack of a CB, or pass rushing specialist in the top 3 rounds to which Zorn said just because they're drafted low doesn't mean they can't produce. Personally I think they went strictly by value and there was none at those positions during their picks. Zorn then mentioned the 13 rookie FA's we signed to which, currently I can't find a list of...

This is purly in my opionon, but ESPN's coverage of was horrible and they completly mailed it in during the second round. First off they never showed the details of the Redskins or Cowboys trade, after commercials they'd scramble to report on the 2-4 picks they missed, and overall they seemed very unorganized. On the other hand the NFL Network's coverage was concise, detailed, had interviews during the 2nd round without missing a beat, and when they went to commercial they didn't lose the draft tracker! That really pissed me the fuck off. The only people who really watch the draft, especially the 2nd round are diehard (me) and I (we?) want the facts, info, etc. ESPN had very liitle analysis on picks, trades, and updates. I'm going to NFL Network next year for my draft coverage.

Agree, disagree, think I need to relax?

is that we aren't getting kicked around by the national media for our picks. My initial reaction to our picks was WTF Mate. After reading a lot of sites, the media seems to agree that Campbell needs weapons and a lot of them.

People are upset that we didn't fill any other postions with our picks but check this out. OG Chilo Rachal USC, DT Trevor Laws Notre Dame, and then Calais Campbell DE Miami all Redskins targets were picked before we got to Malcolm Kelly WR Oklahoma. I strongly belive that Calais would be a Redskin had he not been chosin right in front of them. Per value & need Kelley might not be a bad pick. As of know i'm very surprised on how this developed but after gathering analysis, we could be one scary offence.

Some day 2 prospects that I think could help the Redskins:

CB's Tyvon Branch Conn, Justin King PSU

S DaJuan Morgan NC St

Pass rushers: Pat Sims DT Auburn, Jeremy Thompson (tweener) Wake Forest, Cliff Avril DE Purdue (personel fav)

Jordy Nelson has been discussed as a future draft pick of your Washington Redskins and is getting noticed by our peeps.

Per the Insider:

The WR prospect out of Kansas State has been flying under the radar, but last week we noted the Skins mounting interest in him and how impressive he was during his visit to Redskins Park. Well, according to team sources, the Redskins contingent of 10-odd people - including owner Dan Snyder - also worked him out yesterday.

After leaving Clemson and flying to Oklahoma for the Merling and Kelly workouts, the Skins then flew to Kansas and did the drill with Nelson. Kelly has been sliding down draft boards and his times have been slow. There are some worries from some teams about character.

It is of my opinion that Jordy is a great value get in the 2nd round. As anyone who frequents this site knows, Skin Patrol is quite found of the gentleman and who wouldn't be? Size, deceptive speed aka: "damn that white boy can move!, a redzone target other than Cooley imagine the possibilities! If an O-Lineman could slide, Merling, or Talib pick followed up by Jordy being picked up in the second why that would be just kick ass awesome!

Per the professor:

Redskins narrow choices: The Redskins seem to be making one last check before selecting Oklahoma wide receiver Malcolm Kelly or Clemson defensive end Phillip Merling. A good portion of the Redskins' front office jumped on Dan Snyder's plane and visited both players Thursday. Kelly did some shuttle runs. They wanted to spend a little more time with Merling. It's pretty clear these are two of the Redskins finalists if they are available at No. 21 in the first round. The Redskins need a third receiver. They have also been looking for another pass-rusher.

Malcolm Kelly worries me. He screams 1st rd wideout bust. I heard about him throwing Oklahoma's athletic staff under the bus because he isn't very good at running 40yds with a purpose. The times he recorded don't worry me as much as his propensity to bitch and bring money up already when he's yet to run one frigging route on an NFL field. So I think we should stay away from that young man.

Words that go with Phillip Merling tend to be " Has non-stop motor, relentless in pursuit, and plays with nasty demeanor. These are sweet ass sweet. However things like " wont scare anyone off the edge, will get pushed back, and intelligence could be an issue" These are not sweet ass sweet things. He's projected as a DT in a 43 scheme, and going DT is what Vinny's been all about even though the consensiuus thinks we need another DE.

I read a lot of scouting reports and they all seem to either go against themselves in the "positive/negative" section or our completely different then ones on other sites. I really don't know what to believe but am ecstatic that this thing is a day away!
