Wizards' Owner Abe Pollin Passes Away at 85
What Abe did for Washington DC moving the team to the Verizon Center in Chinatown DC (where I live), and what he did for this city brining in Ernie Grunfeld and Gilbert Arenas is unmeasurable. Thank you Abe. You're a world class owner and will be sorely missed. Sad day for Washington D.C.
Ted Leonsis has right of first refusal for becoming the new owner.

Deal or No Deal? Evaluating the Redskins' 2009 Free Agents
In a post that I
realize is extremely premature, I thought it would be fun to take a look at the Skins current roster and start evaluating all of the upcoming free agents this year.
There are a lot of players on the fence at this point in my mind, and I'll be curious to get everyone else's feedback.
The current list of Redskins free agents include: Jason Campbell, Levi Jones, Casey Rabach, Stephon Heyer (restricted), Phillip Daniels, Rocky McIntosh, Carlos Rogers, Reed Doughty, and kickers Shaun Suisham and Hunter Smith.
My deal/no deals, explanations, and list of available league-wide free agents after the jump:

Pour Some Sugar On Me - Washington Redskins Show Promise, Then Break It
As this season wears on, it becomes harder to tell if I am seeing bright spots on this team or if I am just seeing stars from getting punched in the face by the weekly results. Against the Cowgirls on Sunday, our defense played with the kind of resolve and ferocity you associate with playoff teams. Even our offense played well, in their own anemic way.
The game reminded me of last season in many ways, but here are two (after the jump):

Redskins Sign Guard Paul Fanaika from Eagles' Practice Squad
Height: 6'5
Weight: 327 lbs
40: 4.23 5.23
A quick look at his scouting profile:
BIOGRAPHY:Three-year starter twice named honorable mention Pac-10. Spent most of his college career at right guard as a walk on at Arizona State. 7th round pick by the Eagles.
POSITIVES:Former walk-on who's shown a lot of ability the past four years. Blocks with good lean, quickly gets off the line, and immediately gets his hands into defenders. Stays square, jolts opponents with good hand punch, and rides them from their angle of attack. Seals defenders from the action with good body positioning, and turns them off the line. Plays with a nasty attitude, and looks to hit as many defenders as possible. Gets chips on linebackers at the second level, and flashes ability blocking in motion.
NEGATIVES:Haphazard in his movements and must improve his blocking balance. Adequate strength at the point, yet not overwhelming for such a large offensive lineman. Inconsistent effort and intensity on the field.
ANALYSIS: Fanaika possesses the natural size and underlying skill play at the next level, as either a guard or potentially right tackle. He must take his game to another level in all aspects to meet the expectations scouts have of him and reach his upper limit of a possibility.
Reading that analysis makes him the perfect project for Joe Bugel.

With Redskins' Starters Out, Team Plays Better
I must say the last several weeks the Redskins have actually made the games interesting. While it is a little late, the team seems to finally be playing with a passion and desire I haven’t seen in a long time. While the guys on the field aren’t very talented these days (Lost three starting Gs, our starting LT, TE, and 2 starting RBs), I think we can all agree they are playing better than our first string guys did in the first 6 weeks of the season. Is it a coincidence when the primma donna’s go down with injuries that our team plays better? I don’t think so.
I think we finally have guys on the field who really want it and it shows. Let’s cut the primma donna’s and build around a core group of players who have a passion for the game. In the end we lost, however, I think if Betts had stayed healthy and/or Suisham hits his chip shot FG we may have stole one in Dallas.
I’d also prefer that our defense attack with blitzs on Romo’s final TD drive. We have got to go down swinging with blitzs, rather than dropping back and sitting on our heels for the winning TD drive. Those defensive players wanted to attack Romo, but Blache handcuffed them by forcing them to drop 7 guys into coverage. I’m not very pleased with Blache’s calls down the stretch but it’s hard to fault him when the defense only gave up 7. I do believe we could have had a shutout! Anyway, it will make for an interesting game when Dallas comes to our house.
"He proved his toughness," quarterback Jason Campbell said. "We always knew that about Rock, but everyone got a chance to see it today. ... He just continues to fight. He's a little guy with a lot of heart, and I'd like to be in a huddle with a guy like that anytime." – Campbell

Redskins Defeat Themselves; Cowboys Win By Default
Well, any chances of Zorn keeping his job just went out the window. Ever since play-calling was stripped, Zorn's only job is managing the game, and he failed miserably on Sunday. But first, let's start with the field goal attempt to end the half were Zorn decided to kick the FG from the Dallas 20 with 0:15 seconds left. Most people are livid Zorn didn't take a shot at the end zone, but I actually was OK with it.
Let's be realistic. With this offensive line, what are the chances Campbell would have enough time to let the WRs get to the end zone to make a throw? What in our WR staff would make you think they could get open? Skins were on the road. It's a chip shot. Cowboys get booed miserably going into half down 6-0.
Sellers: If you go for the end zone and it get's picked, then everyone complains, "Why didn't you kick the FG? Suisham is a perfect 100%."
Going back to Zorn's mismanagement. With one timeout already burned in the 2nd half, with 10 minutes left in the 4th quarter, Zorn calls timeout due to the play clock running down. How in the hell is a 5-yard penalty worth more than 2nd half timeout?? Next play...incomplete pass. It's so maddening and of course the timeout burned the Redskins at the end getting the ball back with only 7seconds versus at least 32 seconds.
Zorn in the post game: "I screwed us out of that timeout. It's on me....I really don't know how it happened, because I felt like we got the play in, I felt like we were out of the huddle, and we were down to :01 [on the clock] before we knew it. Absolutely have no idea how that happened. Because we were moving in and out of the huddle pretty well then. "
That quote really reminds me of Spurrier. Seriously, coach? Game management is your ONLY responsibility and these mistakes are noticeable weekly. It's costing the Redskins games. How is Zorn not keeping an eye on the clock at all times? He doesn't have to call plays!
It's obvious the defense has had enough being the only side that carries their weight. Fletcher and Jerry Gray both threw the defense under the bus in post-game interviews...
