Thoughts on the Redskins 2012 Draft

Although there were some head scratchers on draft day for the Washington Redskins – I fully support Shanahan and Allen. Entering rounds 3 – 7, even the so called experts cannot truly predict the spot rookies should be drafted or were value is obtained. Hell, the vast majority of names in those later rounds are unknown players to most of us.

Another point, the Redskins are not taking chances on poor character rookies (or poor Wonderlick scores like Claiborne…a "4?" haha). In addition, we are not trying to build some hyped up "Dream Team" like the Eagles. They continue to stack up these highly profiled players to make this dream team a reality. However, I believe in building around true team players. That means players that don’t have inflated egos! Shanahan believes in getting better by increasing competition as well.

This draft focused on 3 primary areas of concern for the Redskins:

1) Quarterback – In selecting RGIII and Kirk Cousins, Shanahan declared war on the QB position in Washington. I personally love it! He’s saying that no longer will this position hold the Redskins hostage and out of the playoffs. It’s a bold move but one I feel is needed for depth. Beck is out the door and Rex is next! Congratulations Washington for the QB make-over!

2) Offensive Linemen – The Redskins also nabbed 3 linemen in this draft. While some, i.e. LeRibeus were unknown; I still feel they are picking the best player on "their" board (at least by position). Doesn’t mean some of these players are high on Mayock’s’ board. Doesn’t mean these players could play for the Giants or Cowboys because the Skins us a zone-blocking scheme that requires unique talent. Nearly all Redskin fans (including myself) have been demanding O-line help in this draft. Most fans would have been happy with 2; Shanahan grabbed 3 total this weekend. Needed depth and competition.

3) Special Teams – Selections of LB K. Robinson and two (7th round) DB’s (Crawford & Berstine) add much needed defensive depth and talent for special teams. Crawford gives the Redskins a new option as a Kick Returner and I expect him to compete in the offseason (with B. Banks, A. Robinson). In addition, RB A. Morris could add depth as a blocker and on ST defense. Morris could also be depth for the FB position or a solid goal line tailback.

It’s a good sign in the nation’s capital when management is finding small-town players that are not on the high-profile list. In the past, poor management was reacting like the Eagles and Cowboys – selecting players everyone else claims is the best players available. The Patriots, Steelers and Ravens have been known for finding solid smaller school players. The Redskins picked 2 players from SMU and 1 from FAU. Also, 2 players from Iowa, which shows that the Redskins have identified certain colleges that fit what they are looking for (last year was a Nebraska heavy draft). In my humble opinion, The Washington Redskins are headed in the right direction.

Some 3rd Day Considerations

Some people y'all might want to consider for Rounds 4-7

Brandon Washington - OG
Wasn't he mentioned about being our 3rd round pick???
And he dropped to 4???
We can always use some depth/ competition in the O-Line. You never know when a season-ending injury will happen to a OG.

Chase Minniefield- CB
Address our Secondary problem.
Was mentioned as even a 1st rounder sometimes.
UVA CB so he is from around the area.
He won an award that gave him outstanding character/ leadership skills on and off the field.

Orson Charles- TE
Receiving TE that I would love to have.
Also mentioned before as a 1st round prospect.
Cooley and Davis are not getting any younger and it gives Charles to sit a year behind Davis and Cooley so he can learn/adjust to the game. Then next year the Shanahans decide who to get rid of, cap-busting/injury-prone Cooley, or pot-smoker Davis (Not trying to be mean, just realistic; I really do love how both contributed to the Redskins).

Brandon Boykin- CB
I would've loved if we took him at 3rd round. 4th round is even better!
Was considered 2nd round prospect.

Lamar Miller- RB
If you do not believe that Shanahan will not draft a RB, just shoot yourself in the foot. He picks run-blocking scheme RB's and makes them superstars. I'm sure he can pull over a truck driver and say, "Hey you! You are our next RB!" That guy will become a 1000 yard rusher and we just pick up another pick for that.
Ok maybe I am exaggerating, but the point is, Miller is a RB who is a fit for the zone-blocking scheme.

Markelle Martin- FS
Can never have too many safeties.
Also, have you looked at our safeties? I really really really really really am not overly-enthusiastic about them.

So as you see, there are still quality people out in the last day of the draft, we just have to pick them!
I would love to have any of these guys but the one I would love to have most is some one from the DB (specifically CB) position. This position is deep and I'm sure one of the guys mentioned above will be there at our pick in the 4th round.

Thoughts?

Should the Shanaplan include Jacoby Jones??

Obviously Kyle Shanahan is familiar with Jacoby Jones and at some point must have believed in his talents as a receiver. Still young at 27 years old, with 5 years in the league, his primary strength has been returning punts (which adds to his overall value).

In my opinion, increased competition at the wide receiver position is important in camp to determine which receiver develops the trust and confidence of not only the Shanahans but also the new franchise quarterback (RG!!!).

Poll
Should the Redskins trade for Jacoby Jones??
Yes.. Make it happen

Thought you all might find this funny

As we all know, the Redskins traded for the 2nd pick with the Rams and the Rams took our pick and traded it to the Cowboys, thus ending up with the 14th pick. With this pick they drafted Michael Brockers, a solid DT that will fit well with their defense. Now, I'm no draft expert and I know very little about the prospects going into the draft except for the one brought up here on Hogs Haven so I looked at different perspectives of the picks on the draft through various outlets and found the one on yahoo particularly funny.

Bandwagon fans....

Are you guys ready for them and how will you handle them? I know they will be coming out of the woodwork if RG3 looks good in the pre-season. It personally pisses me off because I am one of the few at the bar every Sunday wearing my Skins gear no matter how bad we stink.(I have to go to a bar to watch because here in NC if the Panthers are playing you aren't going to see a Skins game on TV).

So here's something that I saw that intrigued me.

National Football Post: Washington had to pay a pretty penny, but it got its QB of the future. RG3 is an ideal fit for Washington's offense with his ability to be effective in the boot-action game and create big plays down the field with his arm and legs outside the pocket. NFL ceiling: Effective starter with some Pro Bowls along the way. NFL Floor: Turnover prone, below average starter.

SI Grades has Griffin 0.2 less than Luck

And even then both are not considered "franchise prospects" and it's not even close. Luck is at 3.64 while Griffin is at 3.44. I thought their scores would be a lot closer together and also a lot closer to being in the "franchise" prospect score at 4.0 and above. I didn't look too hard, but if Luck was the "best' prospect analysts have seen since Peyton Manning how come his score is so low?

I think the whole thing is bull crap. What are your thoughts?

Trading back in to the 2nd round

Do any of you out there feel like the Skins may attempt to trade back into the 2nd round of this years draft? Let's say a player slips they had rated fairly highly, or perhaps even have their eye a player they've been targeting as a 2nd round prospect. Is the any sort of scenario or player you could see the skins attempt to trade up for in the 2nd round? Whether they do it by trading later round pics or a player/pics combo trade, I think if the price is right its something to seriously be considered. What are your thoughts?

Who r these guys talking to?

I am watching the draft and every draftee seems to be on their cell phones talking to someone? R they talking to the coach of the team that just drafted them, their grandmothers, girlfriends, agents, buying a hummer or negotiating their first endorsement deal? If anyone knows I would be interested as I don't know whether they r talking to their new team or just being huge dicks. Thanks for any feedback. Btw, how about those nationals!

Congrats on RG3

Hey hey hey future RG3 fans!

Congrats on being about to draft the most dynamic player in this years draft. I am a huge fan of RG3 despite being a Denver Broncos fan and I'm making some shirts. I will have them for sale if I get enough interest.
