Pass rusher Junior Galette (27 years old) was released by the New Orleans Saints five days ago. Obviously, good 27-year-old pass rushers typically aren't available. The reason Galette is is because of all his baggage and red flags. Today, he's visiting with the Washington Redskins in Richmond. Apparently he's going to be taking a physical and meeting with Scot McCloughan, Jay Gruden, and Bruce Allen.
Many know Junior Galette for some pretty bad reasons. He has tons of baggage. Last September he signed a huge contract with the Saints and then things kind of fell apart. He was arrested for domestic violence in January (the charges were later dropped) and is dealing with a torn rotator cuff. Plus, just last month a video surfaced from 2013 that appears to show Galette hitting a woman with a belt. The NFL is still investigating. If the NFL decides, a first-time domestic violence offender gets a six-game suspension.
Some say Galette is also a locker room distraction. There is a report that he got into a fight with a teammate last year before a preseason game and that he got a little lazy after signing his huge contract extension last year.
After being released, Galette (and/or his girlfriend) went on a Twitter tirade. Still, his talent in undeniable. If signed by the team, he'd almost certainly start opposite Ryan Kerrigan at the other OLB spot. Presently, Preston Smith and Trent Murphy are expected to battle for that spot. Galette is probably better than either of them as evidenced by his 22 sacks (only 1 fewer than Kerrigan over the same time period), 25 QB hits, 85 hurries, 95 tackles, 4 FFs, and forced 2 safeties over the past two seasons, his first and only two as a starter.
Regardless of whether Galette signs with the 'Skins or another team, he should certainly come at a hugely discounted price. He was basically just paid $18M for the last 10 months of work by the Saints. His market value decreased even further over the course of his actions over the past week.
