If you are a fan of the NFL Draft and you DON'T use Draft Breakdown then you are doing yourself a disservice. If you are not familiar, the kind folks at Draft Breakdown go through tons of tape and make cut-ups of specific players. I thought it'd be productive to look at some of the players the Redskins are having in for visits and debate/discuss if we are all seeing the same things from each player. First up, Jeremiah Attaochu.
:05 Plays against RT. 2 point stance. Does a good job reading run, gets physical with blocker (needs to be more concerned with ball carrier than blocker) and pursues.
:12 Plays against RT. 2 point stance. Rushes passer, has a stalemate with the RT (holding?)
:24 Plays against LT. 4 point stance. Rushes passer, knives into B-Gap to allow outside blitz a free run. Attaochu is able to split B-Gap but ball is thrown before he gets there.
:38 Plays against RT. 2 point stance. Rushes passer. Times the snap excellently. Tahj Boyd isn't able to look downfield because of how fast Attaochu gets up-field.
:48 Plays against RT. 2 point stance. Attaochu bull rushes RT with power and knocks him off his base, creates separation easily but Boyd gets the ball out quickly.
1:03 Plays against RT. 2 point stance. Attaochu rushes quickly up-field but when he feels the RT "let him go," he turns around and defends the screen pass. Textbook.
1:34 Plays against RT. 3 point stance. Attaouchu gives a little move up-field and then stunts back into the middle of the field. He shoots the gap between the RG and C and brings down T.Boyd for the sack.
1:52 Plays against RT. 2 point stance. Attaochu gets tied up with RT but is able to break the engage and continue pursuit up-field. He bends the edge and forces T.Boyd to scramble
2:05 Plays against RT. 4 point stance. Attaochu has given RT problems all night getting up-field. This time gives him a small move up-field and dips his shoulder inside to get free then pursues until the play is over.
2:20 Plays against RT. 2 point stance. Another excellent example of first-step explosion. Pure speed rush for the sack.
2:53 Plays against LT. 2 point stance. He doesn't over-commit on read-option play, he stays in good position. Attaochu lets exchange happen then takes down the ball carrier for a small gain.
3:01 Plays against RT. 4 point stance. Attaochu tries the outside fake, cut inside again but this time the OG has his head on a swivel and picks him up.
3:12 Plays against TE (left side). 2 point stance. Attaochu vs. TE a mis-match. Attaochu shows great first step again, puts TE on his backside, cuts inside of the RB and puts a big hit on T.Boyd.
3:24 Plays against RT. 4 point stance. Attaochu on an outside/inside stunt again. This time the C picks him up but Attaochu arrives with power and drives C back into T.Boyd. Boyd is forced to scramble and gets sacked.
3:34 Plays against RT. 4 point stance. Attaochu tries to cut inside the RT again but RT and RG double team him, bottle him up.
3:46 Plays against TE (right side). 2 point stance. Attaochu bull rushes the TE but hold up enough for QB to get the ball out.
3:56 Plays against RT. 2 point stance. Attaochu bull rushes the RT and puts him on skates (eventually he slips to the ground). Boyd drops a screen pass in behind Attaochu.
4:08 Plays against TE (right side). This is a blown blocking assignment by the TE. Attaochu is cutting inside to free up outside blitzer and TE doesn't block either of them. T.Boyd keeps the ball on the read-option and has Attaochu and company in his face. Boyd throws an interception.
4:18 Plays against RT. 2 point stance. RT tries to cut-block Attaochu but misses. A non-factor in the play.
4:30 Plays against RT. 4 point stance. Attaochu cuts inside to free up outside blitzer. RT bottles him up. A non-factor.
4:41 Plays against TE (right side). Attaochu has a late shift to "contain" responsibilities. A non-factor in the play.
4:52 Plays against LT. 2 point stance. Another great first step by Attaochu. The first step takes him past the LT and out of the play as its an inside give.
5:01 Plays against LT. 4 point stance. LT bottles him up. It looks like Attaochu didn't really have a plan on how to rush on this play.
5:10 Plays against LT. 4 point stance. Attaochu is able to get right past the LT with good footwork and a great swim move. He bends the edge and closes the gap to Boyd. He gets his hands on Boyd but can't bring him down. Boyd scrambles for a first down.
5:23 Plays against LT. 2 point stance. Attaochu drops into coverage in the flat area but T.Boyd keeps the ball and heads up the middle.
5:35 Plays against LT. 2 point stance. Attaochu drops into a middle zone. Play ends up being a delayed draw that gets to the outside. Attaochu doesn't take a great angle.
5:43 Plays against LT. 2 point stance. Attaochu drops into the zone again and does a good job pursuing the run up the middle but by the time Attaochu brings him down, Clemson has scored a touchdown.
5:50 Plays against LT. 4 point stance. LT bottles him up and puts Attaochu on his back.
Overall, Jeremiah Attaochu showed in this game a pass rusher with great first step explosion, the ability to bend the edge, the ability to play on both sides of the formation and a player who has experience rushing both with his hand in the dirt and from a 2 point stance. I'd like to see him have more success against the LT but we will continue looking at more from him.
(Editor's note: This was an experimental-type of article. Any feedback on the style or how to improve the content would be greatly appreciated. Maybe instead of all the plays I can do a "good, bad and ugly" section or something. Feedback in the comments.)
