The Redskins have finally started making some cuts to their roster the day after applying the franchise tag to Brian Orakpo. There were no real surprise cuts among the 5 names released today, unless you were still holding out hope for last year's 7th round pick RB Jawan Jamison. DE Adam Carriker and P Sav Rocca are the two biggest names that were terminated today.
Adam Carriker was scheduled to count for $6.51 million against this year's cap, but has not played in almost two years. He has had several surgeries and setbacks trying to return from a quadriceps tendon tear Week 2 vs the Rams of the 2012 season. Carriker was hopeful that he could return to the team for the 2014 season, but his contract, which had the 5th highest cap hit on the team, made him an easy cut.
Sav Rocca will be 41 this year and was a surprise re-signing last year after returning from knee surgery. He has been inconsistent and ranked in the bottom third of the league for punters during his time with the Redskins. His cap hit for 2014 was $1.36 million, with cap savings of $1.2 million for this season. The team needs serious improvement on special teams this year, and replacing Rocca is the first step towards that goal.
The other cuts are 2013 7th round RB Jawan Jamison who reportedly showed up to training camp out of shape last offseason, and did not show enough in camp or during his time on the active roster to keep him. He will be missed... RB Davin Meggett and TE Robert Quinn round out the cuts, and were signed as camp bodies for this year.
The Redskins also announced they have waived running backs Jawan Jamison and Davin Meggett and cut tight end Richard Quinn.— Zac Boyer (@ZacBoyer) March 4, 2014
