Redskins Performance-Based Pay

The NFL released the numbers yesterday, and we have the complete rundown on who earned what, and why.

The NFL began it's Performance-Based Pay(PBP) program with the extension of the Collective Bargaining Agreement(CBA) in 2002.  There were no PBP payments following the 2010 and 2011 seasons due to the uncapped year, and new CBA being signed.  The NFL released a list of the top 25 earners last year, but there were no Redskins on the list.  Alfred Morris would have to be considered the leading candidate for top earner on the team in 2012 due to his extensive playing time and 6th round draft pick contract.

The program sets aside a pool of money for each team that does not count against the salary cap.  This year's distribution per team is $3,460,000.  The formula uses a player index that divides the player's playtime % by their adjusted compensation for the year.  This is then divided by the total team index, and that determines their piece of the pie.  So the more you play and the lower your contract is, the higher your distribution will be.  Even though performance is in the name of the program, it doesn't mean a player has to actually perform well to earn a bonus.  Common sense would say that if a player wasn't performing well, they wouldn't see the field, but common sense has no place on some teams.

This year's top earner was RT Tyler Polumbus who was credited with playing over 74% of the time with a salary under $1 million.  Bacarri Rambo also caused some questions to be raised with the 4th highest bonus on the team.  But he is playing on a 6th round draft picks contract, and is credit with 30% playing time.  The lowest bonus on the team went to K John Potter, who earned $7174.55 for his 1.54% playing time.  Enjoy that check in two years, John.

The player's will not immediately receive these bonuses.  The NFL will hold the players' bonus money in escrow for 2 years, until 4/1/2016.  There are varying reports on other reasons for withholding earned bonuses from players for two years, and the NFLPA vote was reportedly split on the issue.  This doesn't affect the top earners, but definitely impacts the players on the bottom of the pay scale who earned playing time.

The delayed payment was aimed at helping to nudge this year’s salary cap from $120.6 million to $123 million.  "In the early years of this [labor] deal, where revenues were not growing at the rate we expect them to grow when the television money comes in, we engaged in a process to smooth the salary cap," Atallah said.
