Redskins Cut Center Will Montgomery

USA TODAY Sports

Lichtensteiger to take his place

The Redskins have parted ways with veteran center Will Montgomery. He signed a four-year, $12 million contract with Washington in 2012, and his 2014 salary would have counted $3.425 million against the cap. By releasing him, Washington stands to save $1.9 million (the team still incurs a $1.5 million dead cap hit).

Montgomery had his best season in 2012, when Pro Football Focus called him a "secret superstar." Since then, his play has deteriorated and he's struggled to anchor, getting pushed into the backfield and showing limited lateral movement. A handful of bad snaps hasn't helped matters.

In his absence, Kory Lichtensteiger will move to center.
