I'd like to see us bring in Lovie Smith as D-Coordinator this off-season. I don't think the problem is Haslett individually, I think he's fine, but since the start I have been against the 3-4 and Shanahan having such direct influence on the defense, we've been bad statistically, but most importantly, there has been no sign whatsoever that this defense can actually harass a QB enough to throw him off his game, or that we can get crucial stops on key drives when we need them. I think it'd be great to switch back to the 4-3, maybe throw Brian Orakpo's franchise tag at a Jared Allen and bring him in for a couple years. Let Kerrigan play at DE, bring in a MLB to replace London, a guy like Andrew Jackson out of Western Kentucky will be there in the draft, rounds 3-4. I think the transition would be pretty simple, every single player on our defense played in the 4-3 during their college career and anyone who has been in the league most likely spent their entire playing career in the 4-3.
I think Lovie Smith would be willing to take a D-Coordinator job, I don't think he got as much attention as expected when he was released by the Bears and I'm pretty sure he wasn't the clear front runner for the better job openings, I also know he had major disagreements with the Bears Ownership over his salary, he was the lowest paid head coach in the NFL for much of his tenure. So if I think the money is high enough he would be interested in taking the D-Coordinator job. The Bears defense has been highly ranked statistically for the last 5 years, yards and points, but also in fantasy they have been top 5 in points for the last 5 years which is the most consistent of any defense, they've just consistently produced splash plays like FF, sacks, INTs, DEF TDs and all the ways a defense impacts the scoreboard. Lovie was directly responsible for a lot of that production, he has been a lifetime Linebackers coach and the defense was consistently elite while he was the head coach in Chicago. I think it would be a good move, I liked the signing of AJ Smith the GM out of San Diego last off-season, we brought in Raheem Morris as our D-Backs coach, I think Shanahan is great at bringing in talented front-office and coaching personnel and I think Lovie would really be the right fit.
Also as far as switching between the 3-4 and the 4-3, I know the Cowboys just brought Monte Kiffin and their defense looks better overall through the first 2 games, their standouts like Demarcus Ware are on track with their production, he's got 2 sacks through the first 2 games. I just don't the switch to a 4-3 is even a real switch, I think the 3-4 is simply a defensive alignment same as the Nickel (4-2-5). Shanahan's defense was always a problem in Denver, they would never close out a game, it looks like we've built in the same deficiencies here and I would like to see a better defensive mind take over.
