The move was made in correspondence with signing place kicker John Potter to the roster, which was a move made to provide insurance if kicker Kai Forbath is unable to kick due to a groin injury. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that the Redskins have interest in bringing White back if he clears waivers.
White served a valuable purpose in the preseason by proficiently running read-option plays with the team while Griffin was on the mend from surgery on his ACL. Though reportedly erratic and inaccurate in practices, White ultimately made his way onto the roster with solid performances in preseason games, and also because of the extra roster space created from suspensions to Jarvis Jenkins and Rob Jackson.
It's rare that teams carry four quarterbacks, and situations like the one that arose with Forbath are a big reason why. Kirk Cousins and Rex Grossman are already entrenched as backups to Robert Griffin III, and it's difficult to justify so much depth at any position when there's scarcity at another.
The deadline for waiver claims is Monday at 4 p.m.
