I, along with thousands of Washington Redskins fans am sick of this name change talk. They claim that it offends a small population within the U.S. Let’s face it; this is all about greed as the lawyers found top revenue generating sports team to target and make millions.
Please consider these three things;
- The "Washington Redskins" (with logo included) is a brand name. This is no different than Nike, Burger King, or any other corporation. Therefore, if a small group of people started to claim that "Nike" offended them, would this go to the courts or congress to try to force a Corporations name change? No, that would be ridiculous. Sure, those offended customers don’t have to shop at that store; can discourage friends and family from shopping there, etc. They can even picket that organization, if they so choose. But, to appeal to courts and the U.S. congress in order to force an organization to change its name is simply stupid. How many High Schools football teams are called "Redskins" in the United States? Thousands! Where are the local protests for these teams to change the name? In addition, most of these schools are publicly funded and just slapped on a Redskins jersey with little funding at all. They are not fully branded by a corporation with millions spent in trademarks and marketing.
- By easily proving the "Washington Redskins" is a brand name, Dan Snyder, can show the multi-millions (or billions) spent to market and brand the team over its tenured existence. Now, if the offended group and congress want to reimburse the Redskins organization for the millions lost in branding and marketing costs (being sarcastic here because they won’t), then maybe Snyder could consider a name change. Otherwise, why would any organization change its brand?
- If the Redskins did change their name, it would only lead to increased legal issues. By changing the name, they ultimately admit that the name is offensive to American Indians. Suddenly, the lawyers would claim emotional distress (or a number of claims) for every American Indian in the country. Of course, they will be seeking financial compensation for this, in which they would keep a sizable portion.
Obviously, no one wins here except the lawyers and maybe a small minority after they have been dragged through the media and legal circus. I totally agree with owner Dan Snyder. The Washington Redskins should NEVER change its name. It’s an organization, fully branded for decades, and is an honorable symbol to its fans. Like any brand, it just needs to speak to its customers not appease every soul in the country.
