Redskins Sign Donte Stallworth

The Redskins officially signed Donte Stallworth on Wednesday, and the veteran receiver will compete to join the team for a second season.

As expected, the Redskins signed wide receiver Donte Stallworth on Wednesday according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Head Coach Mike Shanahan said after Tuesday’s minicamp that the team hoped to ink the veteran wide receiver to a deal after impressing coaches during practice.

“I think he brings a lot to the table,” Shanahan said in a press conference following Tuesday’s practice. “We wanted to see what type of shape he was in. I thought he did an excellent job [Tuesday] with the way he worked and what he brought to the table.”

Stallworth, 32, already brings a familiarity of the Redskins offense to camp, having played with the team in 2011. Of course, that was before Robert Griffin III and the read option came to town, so there will be that to learn. In the 2011 season, Stallworth averaged a robust 14 yards per reception over 11 games.

Even then, Stallworth saw the field sparingly, and the Redskins had much less depth at the position. Going into 2013, the Redskins have Pierre Garcon and Joshua Morgan ahead of Stallworth on the depth chart in addition to Santana Moss, Leonard Hankerson and Aldrick Robinson. As a result, Stallworth has a long, uphill battle if he wants to have a second season in Washington.

But during these summer months, it isn’t uncommon for coaches to stack as much depth as they can fit onto a 90-man roster, and even though Stallworth’s odds of making the team aren’t likely, he can still push other camp invitees along with the incumbents at his position.

A player will have to be cut to accommodate Stallworth’s spot on the roster, though that has yet to be announced at this time.
