Hogs Haven Memorial Day Classic: Brian Mitchell, 1990-1999

Washington Redskins great Brian Mitchell invented the excitement we're now used to (and expect) at the kick return/punt return positions.

Career Highlights: 1st Team All-Pro (1995). Holds the record for most combined yards in Redskins' history.

Stats: In his 10 years with the Redskins, Mitchell had 607 kick returns for 9,586 yards, two touchdowns, and 317 punt returns for 3,476 yards, seven touchdowns. At the running back position, he had 388 carries for 1,967 yards.

Standout Moment: One of the many games that stand out in my mind when it comes to Mitchell is the 1990 game between the Washington Redskins and Philadelphia Eagles known as "The Body Bag Game". It was known by that name because eight Redskins left with injuries, and an Eagle player shouting "Do you guys need any more body bags?"

I feel like they've paid for that comment ever since (hehe).

Mitchell had a special role to play: Quarterback.
Amongst the injured were starting quarterback Jeff Rutledge and backup Stan Humphries. Mark Rypien was already injured from earlier in the season, and Gary Hogeboom was inactive. To make matters more crazy, it was Mitchell's rookie year.

Where is he now? Nowadays you can catch the Redskins great on SportsTalk Live and Comcast Sportsnet, and 'Inside The Lockerroom' on ESPN 980.

Memorial Day Thoughts: As a former U.S. Navy Mass Communications Specialist (Journalism Legacy) I would like to dedicate this post to my fellow reporters on the front lines telling the military story, and to all those who are serving around the world. I can't forget my brother who is serving as a First Sgt. in the U.S. Air Force, my younger brother who is in the U.S. Army National Guard, and my cousins who serve in the U.S. Army. Last but not least, my fellow veteran - my wife of 13 years (as of May 25) - who served as a Aerographer's Mate in the Navy (Weather). Good times, and yeah, I'd do it all over again.
