Washington Redskins 2013 NFL Draft Profile: Marc Anthony, Cornerback, California

Greg Bartram-US PRESSWIRE

Can the California corner be part of the secondary solution?

Measurements: Height- 5'11", Weight- 196 lbs

Projected Round: 4-6

Why he would be a good Redskin:

The addition of Marc Anthony (no, not the salsa music singer and former Mr. J-Lo or the one of ancient Roman triumvirate fame) could first and foremost help to bolster our depleted secondary. Anthony has very good size for the position. At nearly 6 feet tall and 200 pounds his size perfectly fits the bill of a NFL corner. He possesses excellent play recognition/diagnosis skills which allow him to quickly break on passing routes and ball carriers. He also played in Cal's 3-4 defense which often employed man coverage so it likely wouldn't take him long to get comfortable with Jim Haslett's defense.

Why he won't be drafted by the Redskins:

With 40 times hovering around 4.6 to say that "Anthony lacked elite speed for his position" would be putting it nicely. His slower straight line speed makes it harder for him to recover after he is beaten by opposing receivers so because of this there is a good chance that he would need to seek regular treatment in the Redskin's crowded DB burn unit. Anthony is also not a great playmaker. With his 5 interceptions and 1 touchdown in 41 career games at Cal he would make Carlos Rogers look like Ed Reed.

Bottom Line:

Marc Anthony is a solid if unspectacular cornerback, as he really doesn't wow you or have the "it" factor; but at the same time there isn't really anything that he can't and won't do well for you in the defensive backfield. If the corner position is not adequately addressed in the early rounds of the draft because the team focused on other positions of need or simply selected the best player available then taking the former Golden Bear with a late round pick might be just what the doctor ordered for an ailing Redskin's secondary.
