Redskins Not Awarded Any Compensatory Draft Picks

Casey Sapio-USA TODAY Sports

Because the Redskins did not lose "more or better compensatory free agents than it acquire[d] in the previous year," they were not granted any 2013 compensatory draft picks.

On Monday, the NFL announced that 32 compensatory draft picks will be awarded to 16 teams. As the readership of this website could probably guess, the Redskins are not one of those teams.

The Eagles, on the other hand, were awarded a seventh-round pick, and 239th overall after losing Juqua Parker and Steve Smith in free agency. The Giants were given the 253rd overall pick, or in other words the next-to-last pick in the draft, after losing Mario Manningham, Aaron Ross and David Tollefson.

The Cowboys, like the Redskins, were also awarded with zero compensatory picks.

The Ravens and Falcons made out the best during this selection process, as both teams were awarded four draft picks, which is the maximum the NFL will grant. The exact science of how the NFL reaches its decision on what to award has not been revealed, though a release from NFL Communications states “under the rules for compensatory draft selections, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in the previous year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks.”

Though the Redskins did not cash-in this year, it’s likely they will receive at least one in 2014 after losing Lorenzo Alexander, and perhaps even more if Fred Davis does not re-sign.
