I've grown up in and around the DC area and every few years there is intense controversy that flares up over the Redskins name and logo. I generally don't pay much attention to it but because this general goes away. But in this era of new media and instant analysis and communication, it is still out there. Mayor Gray (who has other things to worry about, frankly) refused to say "Redskins" in his state of the city address.
I don't think the team should change their name at all. Its the team name, I don't believe its racists because I think that the term "Redskin" is almost completely out of our vernacular right now. I can't think of anyone under 80 who refers to Native-Americans as Redskins. I think the professional agitators grasp onto things like this just to stay relevant.
But the logo? I think that is where perhaps there could be some compromise. I love the logo because it has been the logo for a long time, but unlike some of the other classic franchises in the NFL, the Redskins helmet logo has been through several iterations before settling on the Indian head. We have seen some very good throwbacks over the last decade and they might be something to think about:
There is the Lombardi "R" that makes us look like Green Bay
Then there were the 70th anniversary jams they wore back under Spurrier that (ironically) made is look like Florida State:
Then of course this year's leatherhead look:
Personally . . . I LOVE the 70th anniversary look that we had with Spurrier. That was the jersey I rocked before I (like every homer) got my #10. I believe the fact that we have a logo that is borderline racist in the way its drawn. I think that with the new team and new identity we are trying to build, changing our look would be a good way to do it. The current uniforms belong to the era of the Hogs and Gibbs. For this new era (hopefully) of RG3, we should try something new.
