Tyrann Mathieu in the 4th...?

Stay connected for news and updates

I'm liking what I'm seeing so far out of Tyrann Mathieu. He's exhibiting great speed in the 40 by posting 4.43 then 4.5 during another attempt. In drills, he demonstrated excellent footwork and body control in the backpedal and then opening his hips and locating the ball in the air and making the catch. They then switched sides of the field and repeated it, meaning opening his hips from the opposite direction. Very natural and smooth. Add that with the instincts he was born with and that adds up to a very solid player. You would like for him to be a little bigger and stronger at 5'8'' 186 lbs but this kid could easily play free safety and drop down to nickel CB (with that footwork) in a pinch. He seems more of a off-man coverage player over press but I wouldn't doubt anything he learn very quickly when you're that naturally gifted with body control. I think he's helping himself right now but size (along with his off-field issues) will still keep him far from a 2nd round pick. That bodes well for the Redskins in possibly the 4th because I don't think he makes it past the 4th. I think he has the ability to be effective right away for us with his skill set, (body control, instinctive, footwork, hands and natural player). I've seen all I need to see from him. This kid can play.
