NFC East news roundup: Eli's picks doom Giants, Vick not expected to start for Eagles, Cowboys prepare for arch rival Redskins

David Banks

Dan Ciarrocchi, Mike Harar and Sean Patterson round-up news and notes on the Redskins' NFC East rivals.

New York Giants

  • Just about all hopes of the Giants saving their season were dashed on Thursday night after being handed a 27-21 loss at the hands of the Bears. Two interceptions by Eli Manning on the team's first two drives put the team behind early, and an interception on the Giants' final drive of the game sealed their fate. At 0-6, the Giants are now scrambling for answers, although whatever they find is likely too little, too late.

  • Big Blue View's Ed Valentine observed the film of all three of Manning's game-deciding interceptions. Though blame can be placed on several sources, Manning is by no means absolved of it himself. His interceptions in the Giants most recent loss did not seem to be mental mistakes, but could be more attributed to physical ones including not getting his feet set and throwing off of his back foot.
  • In injury news, David Wilson, who sat out Thursday's game with a neck injury, may miss the season's remainder due to potentially having spinal stenosis. Wilson is seeking a second opinion before making any decisions of sitting out. Although, at 0-6, and due to Wilson sputtering out of the gate along with the rest of the team, there won't be any rush to get him back if it jeopardizes his long-term health.

Philadelphia Eagles (by: Sean Patterson)

  • Bleeding Green Nation reports on the Eagles injuries going into Sundays match-up against Tampa Bay. Michael Vick was limited in practice and is day-to-day, but likely won't suit up on Sunday. Patrick Chung had a full day of practice on Thursday and may start. Tight End James Casey was limited with a groin injury. Donnie Jones was also limited with a foot injury.
  • Michael Vick announced to reporters Thursday that if he needed to play on Sunday, that he would play. Vick stated that he feels much better than he did Wednesday and that he would test his hamstring before the game on Sunday. While Vick could play if needed, CSN Philly does not believe he needs to play after Nick Foles' performance against the Giants. Based on how Tampa Bay has played this season, Foles would likely still be able to get the Eagles a win that they need to keep up in the NFC East.
  • Safety Patrick Chung had his first full day of practice Thursday, but he was non-committal about whether or not he would play against Tampa Bay. Head Coach Chip Kelly was also not giving any insight as to whether Chung was going to play this Sunday. While being a full participant in practice is a good sign that Chung will start, the veteran safety stressed that he is not the decision maker for the Eagles. Chip Kelly will obviously have the final say in Chung's availability.

Dallas Cowboys (by: Mike Harar)

  • As the Cowboys prepared to play their division rival Washington Redskins in Week 6, they got one of their key cogs back on Wednesday when wide receiver Miles Austin came back to be a full participant in practice for the first time in two weeks. Defensive tackle Jason Hatcher, who is still feeling the effect of a stinger he suffered against the Broncos last week, sat out.
  • The Dallas Morning News pointed out this week that while the team has added free agent Brian Waters and first round pick Travis Frederick to their offensive line, the numbers indicate the quality of their play has declined. They have given up four more sacks through five games in 2013 versus last year at this point. They also have 37 less rushing yards than at this point in 2012, which was a season in which they gained the least amount of rushing yards in franchise history in a sixteen game season.
  • On Thursday, Yahoo Sports pointed out that DeMarcus Ware has not had a sack against Trent Williams since 2010 and did not sack Robert Griffin III at all last year. They also noted that Dallas currently leads the NFC with 152 points scored. If the Redskins win on Sunday, they will have a three game winning streak against the Cowboys. The last time that happened was 25 years ago.
