Most of you have know me to be a supporter of Jammal Brown since he was brought in to be our starting right tackle two seasons ago. The former 2005 first round draft pick, and two-time pro bowl selection out of the University of Oklahoma has been a disappointment, due in large part to injuries, the last two years. Now we get word that he has to start the season on the PUP list..............WOW!

So what can, and will be done, to provide the much heralded RG3 with the protection he needs and deserves?

I will list my 3 options after the jump.

Option 1: Prayer - Sure it sounds stupid, but so does yoga for a 6'6" 320 pound man. Maybe the PUP appointment was just precautionary. I'm sure by now Shanny and co. know what they can expect from Brown, and just like many veterans around the league, training camp is more of a hassle than anything. Could it be that Brown is ready, but the coaches just want to give him time, which for a 31 year old offensie tackle can be your best friend. So, prayer is the first on the list, although it may not be our best option.

Option 2: Existing roster players - We have youth and inexperience at the reserve tackle position. Tyler Polumbus(27) is entering his sixth year in the league. He has appeared in 56 games with 19 career starts. Willie Smith(25) is entering his second season with the Redskins. The 6'6" 310 pound undrafted tackle has appeared in four career games, having started three. James Lee(26) is entering his fifth season in the NFL. He has been a journyman thus far, seeing the most action in 2010 with Tampa Bay, where he appeared in 15 games notching nine starts. For his career, the 6'4" 305 pounder has played in 19 games, with 10 starts. Finally, we have rookie Tom Compton(23). The Redskins sixth round pick in this years draft hails from lowely South Dakota, where he was a two-time All Great West Conference selection, and 2011 Offensive Linemen of the Year. The 6'5" 315 pound prospect showed very well in the 2012 East-West Shrine Game, and 2012 NFL scouting Combine, where he posted a 5.11 40 yard dash, a 9' broad jump and a 30" vertical, to go along with 34" arms. Compton showed well in on-field drills at the combine. His weakness was his (in)ability to get just 20 bench press reps at 225 pounds.

Option 3: Trade for, or aquire a player - This one gets a bit more confusing. There will certainly be guys who are released this year during training camp, and we need to do our due diligence in exploring any of these options as they happen. Point is, not every offensive tackle out there will be a good fit for our unique situation. We are starting a rookie quarterback, and we run a zone blocking scheme. For example, a guy like Bryant McKinnie would NOT be a good fit for the Redskins, if he were to be released by the Ravens. Another option is to trade for a veteran right tackle. This also becomes an issue, as we are already without our first round pick in 2013, and giving up any more future picks could hurt the team in the long run. Some possible guys to look at(and please take the word "possible" with a grain of salt)are Chiefs offensive tackle Brandon Albert, Raiders offensive tackle Jared Veldheer, and Patriots tackle Sebastian Vollmer. There could probably be some more names added to this list, but they would be(just like the above) pure speculation.
