Should the Skins release Cooley?

Stay connected for news and updates

Hi there Hogs Haven, this is my first article, so bear with me.

So, should the Redskins keep Chris Cooley on the roster?

Right now the Redskins are in desperate need of cap space to be able to sign the few remaining free agents that could be of use, but right now the possibility of signing them does not seem to be in the Skins future. I am doubtful that the Redskins hearings will actually do anything to their cap space crisis. At the moment the biggest need for the team in at CB, and while many of the big name corners like Asante Samuel, (yes I know he was not a free agent) have already been signed, Mike Shanahan will probably be able to sign someone good... If you have the money. Which brings me to Cooley.

Having spent the majority of last year injured, Chris Cooley lost the starting job to the (in my opinion) superior Fred Davis, who is younger and puts up good numbers. I have no doubt that Davis will be the starting TE this year, and if he stays away from smoking pot, he will do very well and put up great numbers on the team this season. Cooley will make $3.8 million dollars this year, for sitting on the bench for the most part. Is keeping Captain Chaos really worth it this season? He has sentimental value to the fans, but really, I think they need to either restructure his contract, or painfully let him go.

What do you think?

-UPDATE-

Since the NFL won the case against the Redskins and Cowboys, the Skins have revealed to only have around $3.8 million dollars left. This might create a bigger incentive to trade Cooley to get that extra $3.8 million.
