Now, I can not balme Shanahan for the Albert Haynesworth debacle, as he inherited the obese cancer from the previous incompetent regime. I can applaude him for handling Haynesworth the way he did, and getting rid of him at just the right time. Hell, this is a guy who assults waitresses, and punches motorists in fits of rage.
Donovan McNabb started Shanahan's string of questionable signings. Not that McNabb has ever been a player of poor character, but he's not exactly show the leadership skills, neither on or off the field, that you'd like to see in a franchise QB. From his on-field puking episodes, to his lack of control in the huddle, to his laid back, often harlequin'esq off-field approach to the game, Shanahan certainly failed the fan base with this move.
The drafting of Trent Williams was seen as sort of a surprise, considering most had Russel Okung rated as the drafts top offensive linemen. Trent had some character concerns coming out of Oklahoma, most talked about was his lack of work ethic, and a lazy approach to the game. Now we have a mess on our hands with the pot smoking eposide. You have to assume that he was smoking pot in college too, as it seems rather odd for a 23 year old to just pick up the habbit when he joined the NFL. One more positive test could result in him being suspended for the entire year.
Fred Davis has emerged as a great talent, but he doesn't exactly have a "tabula rasa" when it come to the NFL's discipline committee. Just like Trent, one more positive drug test will result in a years suspension. Need we also forget his "sleeping in" issue? Shanny didn't draft Davis, but he did just slap the franchise tag on him, showing the Redskins are committed to keeping him in Burgundy and Gold.
Last season Shanahan brought in veteran wide receiver Donte Stallworth. If you all remember, Stallworth pled guilty to DUI manslaughter charges in Florida, and was suspended by the nFL for the 2009 season. In case you missed it, let me repeat, DUI Manslaughter.
Also, if I recall correctly, wasn't Santana Moss implicated in an HGH ring stemming from a shady doctor in Canada? Could this be the reason we saw such a drop-off in production in 2011(ie, he was no longer able to get his supplies)? It didn't stop Shanahan and the Redskins from giving the veteran a contract extension last season though. Just last week, the Redskins signed free agent safety Tenard Jackson, who was released by Tampa bay for failing a physical due to a previous shoulder injury. The very talented yet troubled Jackson has been suspended twice by the NFL for violating its substance abuse policy, with his latest suspension resulting in him missing the majority of the 2010 season.
The drafting of RG3, whom by all accounts is a super-human human being, could help change the attitude and culture that Shanahan has tried to instill at Redskins park, yet failed miserably at doing so. .
