Washington Redskins Reportedly Place Franchise Tag on Fred Davis

Redskins Beat writer Chris Russell just reported that the Redskins have used their franchise tag on tight end Fred Davis.

Davis was suspended for the last four games of the season due to a violation of the league's drug policy. It's believed that one more violation could lead to a year long suspension. Up until the suspension, Davis was among the Redskins leading receivers with 59 receptions for 796 yards and three touchdowns.

We've all been expecting it for a while now, but it sounds as though it's official.

The franchise tag for tight ends this season is expected to be about $5.5 million.

Update: To provide more validity to the story, John Keim just confirmed via his twitter:

Maybe not

Can say I’m wowed by any of the SS in the free agent market. Think they they will wait and see were he stands with his injury, and what they do about RGIII. They may need him if we trade up for RGIII

What about the FA Safety from Oakland

Or was he franchised? I honestly don’t keep up with that cesspool.

I like this

Cholston, Hankerson split wide, Moss in slot & Davis at TE. Throw in Cooley AND have Davis motion out wide & we might have something!

Definitely a plus to keep him in the fold

one less position to have to try and fill and, if he can keep on the straight and narrow, a good contributor for us. I love that play they run with him. Play action to the right. He goes into “block” then slips in a crossing pattern that turns into a wheel route down the opposite sideline. We got a couple big gains off that play, and he always seems to be wide open on it.

As for me, all I know is that I know nothing.

It was either 5.5 mil for Freddie D or 6.2 for LaRon.

Both guys have their issues but Davis is the better bet.

I'm sure his agent was blunt about signing it.

I'm also curious to see

if the Redskins even offer him a long term deal this year or just let him play under the one year terms of the tag to see how he does

i would at least offer him a long term deal, but very favorable to the Skins

if you wait till next year you lose serious leverage

Isn't it a no-brainer to just sign Landry to a cheap one year contract

because of his health situation? He has no leverage, and is unlikely to go anywhere else. And it gives him a chance he is the beast of old.

by Donnio1234 on Mar 2, 2012 3:20 PM EST reply actions

Yea that would be a no brainer if Landry was willing to accept it but its not that easy.

by Parks Smith on Mar 2, 2012 3:23 PM EST up reply actions

Why is it not that easy? Not arguing - just trying to understand the situation

Maybe offer a longer contract, but not much guaranteed or upfront, then performance (incentive) based? Since he did not have the operation, I’d guess that there is a very good chance that he will never be the Laron of old. Unfortunate, but he could be done. And if so, we can’t rely on him, and should not pay him millions of dollars. And we should be looking for safeties.

by Donnio1234 on Mar 2, 2012 3:32 PM EST up reply actions

Meant - "gives him a chance to show he is the beast..." We cannot afford to let him go - we are desperately short of safeties

And there are not many obvious replacements – the one in Oakland just went away. Davis – good move.

Have you guys been reading about this "bounty" probe the NFL did on the Saints

From the NFL Press Release
Commissioner Goodell has advised the Saints that he will hold further proceedings to determine the discipline to be assessed against individuals and the club. This will include conferring with the NFL Players Association and individual player leaders regarding appropriate discipline and remedial steps.

The discipline could include fines and suspensions and, in light of the competitive nature of the violation, forfeiture of draft choices. Any discipline may be appealed as provided for in the Constitution and By-Laws and Collective Bargaining Agreement. Any appeal would be heard and decided by the commissioner.
