Washington Redskins Reportedly Place Franchise Tag on Fred Davis
Redskins Beat writer Chris Russell just reported that the Redskins have used their franchise tag on tight end Fred Davis.
As reported moments ago on @ESPNRadio980, #NFL sources tell us that Fred Davis has officially received the franchise tag from the #Redskins
— Chris Russell (@Russellmania980) March 2, 2012
Davis was suspended for the last four games of the season due to a violation of the league's drug policy. It's believed that one more violation could lead to a year long suspension. Up until the suspension, Davis was among the Redskins leading receivers with 59 receptions for 796 yards and three touchdowns.
We've all been expecting it for a while now, but it sounds as though it's official.
The franchise tag for tight ends this season is expected to be about $5.5 million.
Update: To provide more validity to the story, John Keim just confirmed via his twitter:
And can confirm @ESPNRadio980 report about Fred Davis being tagged by the #Redskins, according to nfl sources. Again, makes sense.

Maybe not
Can say I’m wowed by any of the SS in the free agent market. Think they they will wait and see were he stands with his injury, and what they do about RGIII. They may need him if we trade up for RGIII

What about the FA Safety from Oakland
Or was he franchised? I honestly don’t keep up with that cesspool.
franchised

I like this
Cholston, Hankerson split wide, Moss in slot & Davis at TE. Throw in Cooley AND have Davis motion out wide & we might have something!

Definitely a plus to keep him in the fold
one less position to have to try and fill and, if he can keep on the straight and narrow, a good contributor for us. I love that play they run with him. Play action to the right. He goes into “block” then slips in a crossing pattern that turns into a wheel route down the opposite sideline. We got a couple big gains off that play, and he always seems to be wide open on it.
As for me, all I know is that I know nothing.

It was either 5.5 mil for Freddie D or 6.2 for LaRon.
Both guys have their issues but Davis is the better bet.

I'm curious if Davis has any problems with signing the tender?

If he does then he can put his chances of a longterm deal into a pipe and smoke it.
@Callahan_9 on the twitter machine.
I'm sure his agent was blunt about signing it.
Fred won’t get paid that much to go to any other joint.
I see it as more cushion for the pushin'

I'm also curious to see
if the Redskins even offer him a long term deal this year or just let him play under the one year terms of the tag to see how he does
As for me, all I know is that I know nothing.
*Socrates*
If he smokes the competition
he’ll get the long term deal he wants
i would at least offer him a long term deal, but very favorable to the Skins
if you wait till next year you lose serious leverage

Smart move
gives him a year to prove he can get his act together.

Said it before
but I want to draft Dwayne Allen in the 2nd, whose a good blocker and receiver, to be our version of Gronk/Hernandez.
Yes I think Cooley’s done.

It is Friday.
He ain’t got no job, and he ain’t got shit to do. So sign the tender.
I see it as more cushion for the pushin'
Laron has sounded like he isn't opposed to staying here
So based on their feelings on the Laron relationship, this might be the right move.
I picture this when Freddy D signs his tender.

Isn't it a no-brainer to just sign Landry to a cheap one year contract
because of his health situation? He has no leverage, and is unlikely to go anywhere else. And it gives him a chance he is the beast of old.
Yea that would be a no brainer if Landry was willing to accept it but its not that easy.

Why is it not that easy? Not arguing - just trying to understand the situation
Maybe offer a longer contract, but not much guaranteed or upfront, then performance (incentive) based? Since he did not have the operation, I’d guess that there is a very good chance that he will never be the Laron of old. Unfortunate, but he could be done. And if so, we can’t rely on him, and should not pay him millions of dollars. And we should be looking for safeties.
Its not easy b/c there are two sides to a negiotation

there is little benefit for a single year deal with the Skins
it only opens up a hole the next year (or earlier if he’s hurt again)
Steveospeak - Content Manager of Fanspeak.com
Meant - "gives him a chance to show he is the beast..." We cannot afford to let him go - we are desperately short of safeties
And there are not many obvious replacements – the one in Oakland just went away. Davis – good move.
Have you guys been reading about this "bounty" probe the NFL did on the Saints
looks like they could be in some serious trouble…facing loss of draft picks. Seems like our good friend Gregg Williams had a hand in it as well
As for me, all I know is that I know nothing.
*Socrates*
Ya
Not good for them, Schefter’s reporting 22-27 defensive players were in on it plus williams and assistants.
I wonder how common an occurrence this is just among players informally
but in this case the actual team, from the GM down were involved and letting it occur
As for me, all I know is that I know nothing.
*Socrates*
I don't know if it's common, but I remember the Skins had the "Hit Stick" or whatever it was in 2010.
But unless someone says, “They paid me to try to hurt player-x,” it’s hard to prove.
I see it as more cushion for the pushin'
or like that dude Charles Martin
who had a towel with the names of bears players on it his “hit list”

he did mention the probe started after there was claims they were going after Favre and Warner
As for me, all I know is that I know nothing.
*Socrates*
They looked like they were going after Favre pretty good that game.
I see it as more cushion for the pushin'
I remember some Vikings players were upset after the game about it too
As for me, all I know is that I know nothing.
*Socrates*
I don't know
with the way the league is focused on player safety, this could lead to some sanctions of some kind
As for me, all I know is that I know nothing.
*Socrates*
ha they are definitely getting in trouble... fines, suspensions, loss of draft picks

Have fines, suspensions, loss of draft picks
been handed out yet? Let me know when they do.
when "spygate" was announced
the punishment didn’t come immediately. the NFL takes its time in reviewing these things
As for me, all I know is that I know nothing.
*Socrates*
What was the punishment?
like a half million bucks and loss of a draft pick? BFD.
I think the loss of a first round draft pick is a big deal personally
As for me, all I know is that I know nothing.
*Socrates*
Adam Schefter
A safe prediction: Saints will be disciplined far worse than the Patriots were for Spygate.
wow
I know it was reported he went to the Titans to coach with his friend Jeff Fischer, but I wonder if this played into Williams leaving the Saints for the Titans at all.
As for me, all I know is that I know nothing.

From the NFL Press Release
Commissioner Goodell has advised the Saints that he will hold further proceedings to determine the discipline to be assessed against individuals and the club. This will include conferring with the NFL Players Association and individual player leaders regarding appropriate discipline and remedial steps.
The discipline could include fines and suspensions and, in light of the competitive nature of the violation, forfeiture of draft choices. Any discipline may be appealed as provided for in the Constitution and By-Laws and Collective Bargaining Agreement. Any appeal would be heard and decided by the commissioner.

They should be forced to trade
Drew Brees for Rex Grossman. That would be a fair punishment.

People really need to leave Fred and Trent alone they made a stupid mistake Im not denying that but who hasn’t, no one is perfect so before you judge them judge the person you see in the mirror.
