Depressing math

I was feeling like Redskins def. overpaid for RG3, but then saw a lot of posters saying things like, "well, we still have 6 of 7 picks", so I figured I'd reassure myself by seeing what portion of value the 1st round pick had for a team vs. all the other picks....

I was actually thinking that if you had your choice, you would definitely prefer to have picks 2-7 vs just a #1. That's how little I understood it.

Anyway, if you use the draft pick point value chart the answer is hugely the other way around. As surprising as this was to me, based on your position in the draft, the 1st round pick represents between the strong and absolute majority of the value of a draft as a whole. For the team picking 1st, that pick accounts for about 73% of the total draft value. Picking 6th, it is near 2/3. The only solace is that if you just won a SB and are picking last, the 1st round pick only accounts for a bit over 60% of the total draft value.

Hopefully, I did this wrong. However, if it is the case that we have spent about 85% of this year's draft on RG3 (1+2) plus roughly 2/3 of next year draft and 2/3 of following year draft, that is pretty damn depressing to me at least. Hopefully he can balance the national deficit or something as well, because if my math is correct (hopefully notr) we have basically given up roughly 2.5 years worth of drafts for one guy. Ouch.
