The Secondary

Along with the obvious concerns at QB, OL, and WR this offseason, the Redskins face several question marks in our secondary. At cornerback, Josh Wilson seems to have been a good pick up. He is not a shut down corner, but he is reliable and should be our RCB for the next few years. However, after Wilson our talent drops off considerably. DeAngelo Hall is coming off a poor season, and his play as a Redskin has been inconsistent to say the least. In short, he is not a shut down corner, or even a #1 CB who can line up against the opposing teams #1 WR. I also don’t think any of the reserves CBs (Barnes, Westbrook, Buchanan, and Thompson) provide acceptable depth at the CB position although I will say Thompson at this point is unproven.

The safety position, which I had at least thought would be an area of strength at the start of the season, is even more of an area of concern. Atogwe and Landry could not stay healthy, and even when they were healthy, did not play at the level most of us were expecting. As far as the primary reserves are concerned , Doughty is…well…I’ll just say is nothing more than a reserve whose play is Ok against the run, and leaves a lot to be desired against the pass. Gomes played pretty well as a rookie when forced into action, but questions still remain if he is a starting caliber safety in this league.

So what should the redskins do this offseason? Make dramatic changes via free agency and the draft? Make some minor changes? Can we go with the same group of guys next year?

My thoughts are as follows:

For the CB position, I’m not sure we can make many major changes going into the next season. I think the Redskins will try to use their first three picks (assuming there are no trade up/downs) in the draft on the offensive side of the football, and I think we will end going into next season with Hall and Wilson as the starters. I would like to see the Redskins go after a CB in the 4th round who could come in and play nickel. I don’t think Barnes can be an effective corner in this league, but I do think he could play safety, and I would not mind seeing the redskins move him there to replace Doughty. I think we may have to end bringing in a tier II FA (i.e. Lowery or Hayden) as well, and let him battle it out with Thompson and Westbrook.

The safety position is a little more complicated and also a bit more of a concern. Do we resign Landry? Do we bring back OJ? I know it’s a role of the dice- and his health is a huge concern, but I would prefer to bring back Landry. I think when healthy he is a very good strong safety. As far as OJ is concerned, while I understand he too had nagging injuries throughout the year, I would be tempted to let him go. I just was not impressed with his leadership or play this year (Ironically I think Shanny is going to do the exact opposite and let Landry walk and keep OJ). We should draft another safety with our second pick in the 4th round (I might even use that 3rd round pick if the right guy is on the board). I’d like to see Barnes, Gomes, and the rookie battle it out for the FS position.

While there are issues, they aren't that bad

picking up a CB would help a lot and I’d try to do so in free agency as well as the draft.

Landry is a big question mark for me because his injuries are partially due to his playing style. Can he stay healthy? I’d only resign him if I thought that were true because he’s going to want big bucks and I’d only pay big bucks for people who can be healthy. I’d use the same approach with OJ. That’s the business of the NFL.

I actually really like Brandyn Thompson a lot I think he can do quite well.

I do too, thought last years preseason, he showed some stuff...

my only concern is his size (height). I’m sure the coaches, who have seen him on a daily basis, will know when to give him more opportunities…

can we start drafting people from ethopia?

Hey you…….click-tink-click-click-mwak-tink…..don’t let this guy get away from you. They’re also really smart from what i’ve heard.

One thing that I want to add is that cutting Hall should be explored

Cutting Hall saves $6.2 million from this years cap, and like $8.5 million from next years. For that money the Redskins could get a good starter, and even a decent nickel (due to how contracts are backloaded).

I thought about that

Don’t think we wil get Grimes, but a guy like Brandon Carr might be worth going after

He will, but so is Hall

The next two years Hall counts about $15 million against the cap. you could easily fit a top corner on the books for the next two years with the same outlay, yes the average value might be higher, but those first two years $6 million and $8 million cap hits are very doable.

it would be appealing

we would not have a great CB, but we would have 3 good ones, and it might allow us to focus on other postions in the draft this year

+1

I’m a trade up for RG3 supporter. This is a good FA plan to help the team and fill holes with immediate contributers. We have to find ways to get stronger as an all around team. Two solid players for the price of one inconsistent playmaker is a good start

Raheem Morris

Im hoping he’ll have an impact on guys like thompson, westbrook, barnes, and gomes. Maybe he sees something previous coaches didn’t with these guys and can help them show some improvement. Otherwise i see a pick in the first 4 rounds dedicated to a db.

I think Otogwe will be fine. He was never really healthy all year but was very solid when he played. He’s a sure tackler and playmaker when healthy. Hopefully his run of minor injuries is over, although i have not checked his injury history

Barnes is not an effective safety. He made like one decent play a year ago. Reed is better overall (and I’m down on Reed).
