Redskins in a unique position, more QB speculation...

Reading the web and cruising through twitter I came upon this article on NFL Salary cap projections SunSentinal.com

Star-divide

It appears from the information, the Redskins are in excellent cap position,

POSSIBLE BIG SPENDERS

Teams that have the cap space to make big moves in free agency.

Cincinnati Bengals $80,641,237

Tennessee Titans $92,739,765

Washington Redskins $94,351,284

Typically, the Redskins had always been in the "TIGHTENING THE BELT" position and having to work miracles in order to do some of things they had done in the past. I like the direction the Redskins went in the 2011 draft and I like the 2011 team, because for once it appears the Redskins are building a team instead of trying to build a group of individuals to make a playoff run.

However, if healthy I'm starting to get behind a Manning signing with drafting a backup/starter for the future. Redskins will have the money, and competition may be limited with Dolphins being in the "WORKING ON A BUDGET" when it comes to Salary cap.

Is the off-season over yet?

Don't know the details

of the rams cap, but if their current team salary is $121 million, and the cap in 2012 is expected to be around $124 million, then trading Bradford and his contract could be a possibility.

put the squeeze on them and make it good for us, not them

While I do think Bradford is a very good QB, I don’t want to trade away a ton of draft picks for him AND spend oodles of dollars too.

It will be interesting to see how expensive it will be to trade for Bradford vs trading to move up to draft RG III.

by aFan4Life on Feb 7, 2012 11:24 AM EST up reply actions

Anything can happen,

But I remember hearing that Bradford was one of the main reasons Fisher went to St. Louis. I don’t think Bradford will be available at any price.

yeah, major brain fart I had there

do we need to trade all the way up to #2 to get RG III? I suppose that depeneds on Cleveland eh?

by aFan4Life on Feb 7, 2012 3:18 PM EST up reply actions

I agree

But I would give up the 6th pick for him

I agree with this post 100%

I understand why people are hesitant about #18. Neck injuries and football don’t go together. Not to mention our …ehem…“illustrious” list of past free agents. But if he says he can go, and doctors already said he can’t injure it further, why the hell not take him. Give him a incentive based contract, spend the next two or three years stocking the cupboard with good drafts all while staying competitive. Makes sense to me. Once this team has a few good drafts under the belt, it will be ok for us to trade some picks away to jump up and grab the next franchise qb.

i forgot who said it but....

it does seem like people are getting more and more amped up for manning

at first
“fuck no we don’t want retreads”

then
well he’d be better off in SanFran

then
theres lots of places he can go why would he chose here

then
well if he’s healthy why not

then
fuck it if he sucks we’ll just throw Tannehill in there, but he wont suck he’s Peyton “I built Indy a Stadium and now they’re running me out of town” Manning.

but i do have to agree

If you could get Peyton Manning on the cheap and draft Michael Floyd in the first, Tannehill in the 2nd, then an OG or RT in the 2nd why the hell not.

What is wong with everyone wanting manning ?

We finially started drafting young players from the draft and now alot of people want to REVERT back to vinny style football and get as some people say a RETREAD TIRE . The colts are getting rid of manning for a few reason first its the cap space and they wanna go YOUNG with their team , why do you think philly got rid of McNabbs ass hmmmm? Are we not trying to rebuild from the draft instead of going the OLD route of paying high price players to come here to retire ? that worked out GREAT didnt it ? why cant we for ONCE stick with the draft and build our team from the ground up ? Why do anyone want a guy WAY PAST his prime ? Why not show every NFL player that they are not coming to our team just for a big PAYDAY ? show the NFL players if they wanna come here they need to produce numbers and play hard for our team instead of coming here just for a payday and not play hard then retire on our ass or go somewhere else ? Focus on the draft TRADE UP and get RG3 and keep this team building from the draft and show every NFL player that we will no longer pay a huge amount of money for everybodys elses garbage . Our team is not a retirement home for OLD and washed up players . We need youth on our team not OLD GUYS with neck injurys , dont abandom the draft after just one year . Its ok to get 1 or 2 FAs as long as the price is reasonable but mainly focus on the draft for youths and have a young talented team instead of bringing old players in here for a stop gap and then move on after a few years .

by washingtonwin on Feb 7, 2012 12:50 PM EST reply actions

Peyton is washed up?

Can you look into that crystal ball and see the winning lottery numbers too? Yes, we all know our history of free agents here. But that shouldn’t make us gun shy. Peyton is no Haynesworth, Sanders, Archuletta, etc. His work ethic alone is enough to make me feel safe with that choice. But, we can’t trade up YET to get one of the better qb’s. Why not ride the better Manning until we can?

What the shit

by tony420 on Feb 7, 2012 1:03 PM EST up reply actions

Yea then one big hit.

Could knock him out or in 2 or 3 years retire and BAM back looking yet for another QB YET again . Did you read we had 23 QBs in 20 years ? stop the stupid shit and get a dam YOUNG qb , why do you think indys getting rid of him ? Whats wrong with getting our franchise QB? are you afraid of getting a franchise QB ? do you wanna lose for another 20 years ? i know peyton might win a few extra games for us but when he retires he will set us back in the same position we are in now nedding a dam QB yet again .

by washingtonwin on Feb 7, 2012 1:10 PM EST up reply actions

we can do both

trade back in the first get Tannehill, then OG then Toon QB OLmen and WR and we can get manning to mentor Tannehill

here is a few later rounders tha won the SB

Brad Johnson Vikings 9th round pick
Drew Brees Chargers 2nd round
Kurt Warner UDFA

Since 2000 the SB was won by 2nd round or later QB 6 times ( of course 3 of those were Brady)

Getting Peyton Manning would be a horrible idea, first of all he will not fit with Kyle Shanahan like with McNabb they will bump heads cause Peyton has his way of doing things and Kyle want to do things his way.

Also Peyton will NOT come to DC so get it out of your heads, he dont want to have to play Eli twice a year and he is looking to make a Super Bowl run and that will not happen here in Washington, cause we are in year 2 of a rebuild and last time i checked 37 year old QB’s coming off serious neck injuries do NOT fit into a rebuild.

And Last he will go to Miami over Washington, the owner wants him there and he would have a better overall team and weapons Brandon Marshall, Reggis Bush and a 6th ranked defense, so Miami would be the ideal place for him to land not The Redskins

by Highspeed30 on Feb 7, 2012 2:08 PM EST up reply actions

Nobody of sound body and mind,

Is sitting around thinkin to themselves, “Hmm, I would love to go play with Brandon Marshall.” The guy is FREAKIN NUTS! Plus the whole Dolphins organization is a total mess right now, think Snyder/Cerratto part two. You say he doesn’t want to play Eli twice a year, but goin against Brady/Bellicheat twice a year and again in the playoffs is better?

What the shit

by tony420 on Feb 7, 2012 2:23 PM EST up reply actions

Brandon Marshall is a true #1 and the Dolphins was very competitive without Peyton Manning vs New England and they have a good defense. Who do Manning have to throw to here??? nobody near B Marshall’s talent, and with a guy like Reggie Bush out the backfield as a weapon.

I am not sure Miami's new coach...

signed on to just let Manning run the show on offense. How many times have we heard the expression “He is going to bring in his own guys”? That relates to HCs as well. The best way to implement the offense he has been overseeing is for Philbin to bring in Flynn. Yes, Ireland is there as GM and will run operations. But I can’t believe that, during interviews for the HC job, they did not discuss how the team would proceed. If Ireland told Philbin they were strong contenders for Manning, would Philbin want the job. And, how does it look to hire a guy, then sign people who don’t fit his system. Ridiculous!

Flynn will be in Miami. Skins will trade up #2, to select either RG3 or Luck (if we are lucky). Where Manning ends up? I don’t know. It could be a surprise team, like the Houston Texans (young team, great defense, one of the best WRs, revenge in division).

by jgibbsfan1 on Feb 7, 2012 2:35 PM EST up reply actions

Philbin is just the head coach, he is not signing any check over there and There owner Ross want Peyton Manning from what i am hearing he is their top target for QB and Flynn is their plan B. A guy like Philbin is just happy to get a head coaching opportunity and if they got Manning he would be ok with it.

by Highspeed30 on Feb 7, 2012 6:03 PM EST up reply actions

I thought about that...

but if you were hiring a coach, would you want a guy who didn’t have conviction in his philosophy / plan? What kind of hiring would that be? “We are going to give you one of only 32 premier jobs in the world, and we expect you to do what we say, with the players we give you…”

Maybe. I just have a hard time seeing it…

by jgibbsfan1 on Feb 8, 2012 12:58 PM EST up reply actions

You do contradict yourself here
Focus on the draft TRADE UP and get RG3 and keep this team building from the draft

trading up would mean we wouldn’t be building through the draft for the next 2 years.

A fan of losers, Redskins, Wizards, Orioles, Terps, Dale Jr, America

by jbh1190 on Feb 7, 2012 12:53 PM EST reply actions

Look

You might have to give a few drafts away but to get a elite player it would be well worth it in the long run . Lets say we go your route of getting manning and in 2 years we need to get another QB then we pick at say 15 in the draft well it might cost us alot more to trade up then rather if we traded up now.

by washingtonwin on Feb 7, 2012 12:58 PM EST reply actions

But by that time.....

our overall roster and depth will afford us the luxury of trading up. We don’t have that luxury right now. We still have huge holes and although our overall depth is better, it is still below the league avg. We don’t have the LUXURY of trading picks now, If we can have solid QB play….not great…but solid and have some success to get these young guys careers started in a positive mindset, we will have a very solid foundation if we can have 2 more drafts like last years. Then, and only then, will we have the luxury to send away draft picks again. Doing that now is like taking out a 2nd mortgage to help pay your first mortgage. We are in talent debt, and until we get out of it, we can’t just ship possible talent out….not for one guy!

Can we please get a mother f***ing QB we can be proud of?!?!?!?!?!?!

by shvd98z24 on Feb 7, 2012 4:03 PM EST up reply actions

how can you develop the talent that you do have with a guy like Rex Grossman at QB? or John Beck? Grossman under throwing open receivers downfield and Beck checking it down to Helu 14 times not even throwing to receivers.

You are ALWAYS going to have holes, the Giants just won the Super Bowl and they have holes, you do NOT have to have a perfect team before you can get a franchise QB. The Giants was far from a finished product when they trade for Eli but it did not set their Franchise back nor did it Mortgage their future. You need to get a young guy in here that is a top QB prospect like RG3 or Luck and let him grow with the team.

by Highspeed30 on Feb 7, 2012 6:09 PM EST up reply actions

Take a look at the Giants roster......

they have a much more competitive team than we do. their overall roster talent and depth is above ours almost across the board. I am not saying we need to make the playoffs before we get the QB……I am saying we have work to do before we can afford the luxury of trading picks away. We aren’t there yet….the sooner fans like you realize this….the sooner our coaches stop getting fired and we stop bringing in all the overpaid, over hyped, over the hill guys to square our roster up. You trade this years 1 and 2, and next years one and 3…..that’s 4 potential starters for 1 potential starter. Then you still need to fill those holes. What’s the point of having a blue chip prospect when you have given up the ability to bring in top notch receivers and blockers for him? I am not saying we need pro-bowlers everywhere….but if you look our roster and the depth….and think we all we need is a rookie QB…..you are just plain silly!

Can we please get a mother f***ing QB we can be proud of?!?!?!?!?!?!

by shvd98z24 on Feb 7, 2012 7:32 PM EST up reply actions

On a side note....

I am not expecting to go into next season with Grossman and Beck as our QBs. I see Grossman staying…but I seriously expect a signing like Orton as a hold over. I am down with whatever the Shannahan-Allen plan is. If they are in love with a guy…go get him…..I just don’t think they will because of the cost and the condition of our roster. As far as us always having holes….I understand that…but we have big ones….bigger than most competitive teams. You can’t efficiently fill those kinds of holes by trading away you top of the draft for the next 2 seasons for one guy!

Can we please get a mother f***ing QB we can be proud of?!?!?!?!?!?!

no1 unstands that washingtonwin

plus we were a few really bad rex games and 3 beck starts from being at least 8-8 last year.. this year even if we get a small upgrade say orton or what ever have a nice draft. sign a wr a o-line men. we will have a very good chance of being 9-7 or 10-6. then we will be in trouble when u start to think about drafting a franchise qb. it will take at least almost double what we would have offer this year to move up four spots.

by munson21502 on Feb 7, 2012 5:46 PM EST up reply actions

LOL

So you admit a dramatic improvement for this teamwith an Orton or Flynn? And this is BAD? You just hit the main reason NOT to trade up! Fill the holes NOW. So what if it costs more to trade up next year? Losing more then hurts less than losing less now.

We have had.

23 QBs in 2o years yea why not go your route and keep having a QB OR 2 EACH YEAR SO LOOK HOW THAT WORKS OUT .

by washingtonwin on Feb 7, 2012 1:00 PM EST reply actions

See drafting up

Just to get one of the best QBs ever to come out of the draft would be well worth getting . Im not saying trade up every year im saying just this year to get the guy that will be our QB for the next 15 years . We can always trade back next year and get more draft pick and get some back that we lost . But we need a QB now not later and we need a good one not a second round one . Stats say a sec round rarely gets to a super bowl and like brady he is the exception .

by washingtonwin on Feb 7, 2012 1:14 PM EST reply actions

Griffin

is NOT “one of the best QBs ever to come out of the draft”. You are deluded. He’s good, maybe great. He’s not Luck, he’s not Bradford, he’s not Manning. He’s Vick, who came out to much fanfare and mixed results. If you honestly think this team wins 10+ games by giving up 3-6 starters out of two drafts and having to rely on overpriced FA vets to fill those holes, I want some of whatever you’re smoking. Must be some good shit.

by GeoFly on Feb 7, 2012 7:09 PM EST up reply actions

I don't understand why it would be a horrible idea to get Manning...

If we are not giving any draft picks, what is the big deal? We are still going to be going thru the draft, we have enough money to sign a top free agent guard and a wr. Then we would be able to draft a right tackle in the 1st rd, pickup a qb in the 2nd or 3rd round. With that we would have a solid oline with depth, a #1 Wr, young talent infusing the team, and then a hall of fame QB that is a leader on and off the field. From sports analyst such as Trent Dilfer, Steve Young, Brian Mitchell and others. Numerous players in the nfl play with this fused vertebrate and they play the most physical position on the field linebacker. So as long as Peyton Manning is cleared to play I’m all for it.

im noy good at these offseason money things

but is it possible (by possible i meen is it too expensive) that the skins could get peyton and kyle orton, keep rex and have there qb depth like that. I dont like orton but i think its possible shanny does, also it seems crazy, which is why it could happen. It seems like the shannys keep syaing nice things bout rex and i could see them wanting to keep him, just not start him.

Q-tip

by Sean Qtip Guilliams on Feb 7, 2012 8:30 PM EST reply actions

Why do you want 3 veterans?

Shannahan has never showed a propensity to keep 3 QBs let alone 3 veterans. It would be more likely to have Manning OR Orton and then Rex…..simply bc Rex already knows the offense. However, if Manning would come, I would see the offense changing quite a bit and you would be better off with Orton but that would be a lot of money tied up at one position. I would think if Manning comes…expect a RC QB behind him to learn. I doubt Rex gets picked up too quickly so if Manning goes down…he would be an option to bring in and keep the young guy on the pine. If Orton comes in, I would still like to see a young QB on the roster but it may make sense to keep Rex because the ability difference isn’t as dramatic.

Can we please get a mother f***ing QB we can be proud of?!?!?!?!?!?!

by shvd98z24 on Feb 7, 2012 11:25 PM EST up reply actions

Both Rex and Beck need a restraining order put against them, neither can come within 200 miles of a Redskin practice facility or game site. Signing Orton as a filler until a QB can be groomed to take over is a good move, He is decent with the ball and won’t kill the cap. but if we do sign him we need to draft the kicker out of A&M and let Gano go. Orton absolutely sucks in the red zone and we need a kicker more reliable than Gano.

by future is now on Feb 8, 2012 4:55 AM EST up reply actions

Gano was plenty reliable last year.

We got a bunch of his kicks blocked, though. Instead of worrying about a perfectly good kicker, how about we fire Danny Smith and learn how to play special teams?
