Redskins Set to Pursue Free Agent Quarterbacks

All this bickering talk about first round, rookie quarterbacks may be for nothing. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter the Redskins are set to go the free agent route come March:

If Peyton Manning is released, Redskins are expected to pursue him. Redskins also prepared to pursue free agents Matt Flynn and Kyle Orton.

Ooooo... the life of a Redskins fan. Remember Schefty and Shanny were boys in Denver, this could just be another smoke screen from Professor Shanny.

Another update via Adam Schefter:

Peyton Manning is willing to create a contract that would contain no guaranteed money up front and would be incentive laden with bonuses.

Because Rex is a below average QB? Really need to stop the Rex propaganda. He turns the ball over too much to even have a chance to win consistently. Orton is a very average QB at best and would still be a upgrade.

I’d be ok w/ an Orton signing & drafting RG3 but doubt Orton wants to hold a clipboard.

Orton....hmmm

I wouldn’t knock orton on a 2-3year midlevel, as long as we still draft Tannehill, Weeden, Foles, or Osweiler. While not elite, Orton Is effective and very capable of Shuab like numbers – not a long term solution, but a bridge that will allow us to wait for a 2nd or 3rd round qb to develop and allow us to do something else with the #6.

Kyle Orton is turrrrrible. I’m tired of starting QBs that have a ceiling in talent…and a rather low one at that.

According to rotoworld

Schefter also said we’ve “contemplated” trading up for a QB too. I think it’s safe to say that we’re keeping our options open. Though if we could really sign Manning and not have to guarantee any money, that would obviously be the ideal choice.

Yes!!!!! Bring in #18 and draft HH favorite Tannehill in the second round.

Use the first pick on Claiborne or a lineman and continue the “rebuild”. How can any Skins fan be against it?? I’m not sold on Flynn personally, but if we sign a Qb it saves all our draft picks and the “rebuild” lives on!!

He allows us to save all our draft picks, draft a Qb of the future that can sit and learn.

We can take Claiborne sure up the secondary, take Tannehill in the second. That’s all rebuilding or even trade back and get more picks now that our biggest question mark is answered.

At last year's Combine, remember MS mentioned

that they needed a “pass rusher” to compliment Orakpo…and gues who they drafted in the first round Ryan Kerrigan.

So I’m not sure if you can say that Mike is a liar anymore. He’s just unpredictable.

by Chilliewil on Feb 6, 2012 9:28 AM EST up reply actions

Then...

“Ryan O’Halloran of CSN Washington updated that report regarding free agents Flynn and Orton. O’Halloran reports that there is a consensus in the Redskins’ organization to pursue Orton, but not Flynn.

Flynn, with all of two NFL starts, has been likened by some Redskins personnel as a lesser version of Kevin Kolb — and they didn’t like him, either.

Orton and Skins quarterback Rex Grossman have a history together, and competed for the starting job in Chicago. O’Halloran writes that Grossman, a free agent, would likely be free to sign with another team if Orton lands in Washington. With Manning’s health still up in the air, it appears Orton is target number one at this point."

Agree, but they have to get a good young QB prospect who can

become the Quarterback of the Future. A guy like Orton would more or less be filling Rex’s role – place holder until the new guy is ready.

The huge advantage of taking a FA QB

Is how much it opens up our draft possibilities.

Suddenly we can take Blackmon at #6 and be able to take a RT in the 2nd (instead of a QB there).

Or trade back from 6, get Floyd in the mid first, get a RT and a CB in the 2nd.

So many possibilities

by tman5 on Feb 5, 2012 2:42 PM EST reply actions

It's like the 49ers

If you can continue to build a really solid team, that is only missing one piece (QB) so be it. When you are really solid all around, you can then bust the bank for the QB at some point.

Wait til next year for a QB. But I am not opposed to “wait til later to DRAFT a QB.”

If we get a FA stopgap, but keep improving at every other position, I am happy. Solid depth and talent all around is what makes a good football team.

by tman5 on Feb 5, 2012 3:17 PM EST up reply actions

it makes sense

Even if we got griffin with the 6th pick, I don’t think you would want to throw him into the fire. Maybe I’m reading between the lines but in shannys recent interviews he has talked about adding depth and playmakers. In addition, he’s talked about wanting a rookie to have the right protection and weapons to excel. I interpret this to mean he will not make a move for Qb in the draft unless somebody falls in his lap

by Redskin44 on Feb 5, 2012 3:58 PM EST via mobile reply actions

I'm pretty sure he talked about getting a quarterback, too

It seems to me that politically speaking – if he wants to keep his job – he has to get a top quality QB. If he does not, and loses, he’s gone. If he gets a seemingly top guy, he’s safe for at least two more years, even if the guy flops and/or the teams loses.
If they did something like Orton and Tannehill (or Foles or Weeden), he’d be OK, although I would prefer somebody better than Orton to start the season. Of course, I would still want them to trade up for RG3, but wouldn’t complain too much.

by Donnio1234 on Feb 5, 2012 4:31 PM EST reply actions

We get a stopgap, draft oline help and offensive play-makers, its not a bad approach. Personally, I like the QB’s in the next draft more so than this one.

The only way Schefter comments would have been interesting news...

… is if he said the redskins are definitely NOT pursuing (insert QB prospects name). At least then we can deduce and shrink the scope of our options at QB.
