SB Nation 2012 NFL Mock Draft

Greetings Hogs Haven, P_Roach17 here from Bleeding Green Nation attempting to organize a SB Nation-wide mock draft. After a disappointing season for my Birds, and being less than thrilled with having to watch the Giants in the SB (I'm sure you guys can sympathize here), I'm left with a football void at my core. So, as a result, I'm turning to the rest of SB Nation to satisfy not only my football needs, but the needs of others who are on the outside looking in during this 2011 postseason. You will of course be representing the Washington Redskins in this Draft, who currently hold the 6th overall pick in the 2012 draft, as I'm sure you all know. Your cooperation in this poll is greatly appreciated. Note: I would like for this poll to reflect the fans choice, not necessarily who you think your team will draft. Now for a few quick rules.

Star-divide

Rules:

1) There will be no trading picks. Trading picks would be both complicated, and time consuming, so everyone will just stay put at their set draft position.

2) Submit your votes for the player of your choice as soon as possible. After 2 days the results of the poll will be final, Hogs Haven will submit its pick at 1am on 2/6/12, and Big Cat Country will be on the clock.

3) If you feel as though I have left a player out that deserves consideration as your teams draft selection, then let me know in the comments section, and I will gladly add them.

4) Any draft talk (or argument) that is to be made pertaining to your Skins' pick, feel free to make in the comments section.

5) ******** Be sure to rec this post so that it will remain under the recommended fan post section for everyone to see, and so that they are able to cast their vote *********

Previous picks:

1) Indianapolis Colts - Andrew Luck

2) St. Louis Rams - Matt Kalil

3) Minnesota Vikings - Morris Claiborne

4) Cleveland Browns - Robert Griffin III

5) Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Trent Richardson

Hopefully this can be a fun experience for all of SBnation, as well as provide insight into the upcoming NFL draft. Be sure to vote and keep the ball rolling so that the rest of SB Nation can participate. Thanks for your time, and good luck in the upcoming season. Hogs Haven is now on the clock!

Believe it or not

RGIII almost dropped to you guys here. It was a fairly close between him and Blackmon for the Browns’ pick.

Blackmon

Im not a build-a-new-version-of-the-hogs-with-every-pick kind of guy…but I could be talked into Riley Reiff…very easily

by YesItsThePope on Feb 4, 2012 1:48 AM EST via Android app reply actions

He’s huge, but also athletic. Perfect for zone blocking and we’d be set at tackle for 7+ years barring career ending injuries.

by Nigad Osman on Feb 4, 2012 11:23 AM EST up reply actions

You need to be talked into a tackle? How about this…

How many starting tackles do we have on the roster who have played at least 12 games in each of the last two seasons?
How likely are any of the tackles on our roster to play 16 games next year?

I would almost be tempted to take the best wide receiver at this point, but there are so many young receivers available in free agency… you almost never can say this about offensive line

I'm going to assume

the Skins get one of Bowe, Jackson, or Colston in free agency. Hence, I’ll go with Reiff.

by 2up2down on Feb 4, 2012 1:58 AM EST reply actions

I still had to go with Blackmon.

The line played so much better down the stretch. its becoming a passing league and I’d like to give our QB (whoever it is) as many weapons as possible.

Plus I went with the Best player available approach.

by JeanBaptiste on Feb 5, 2012 4:02 PM EST up reply actions

If Blackmon does drop to us he would be great bait to trade down with. Or if we end up taking a LT and putting TW at RT where he belongs if he gets gets suspended again it would not affect the the o line as bad as loosing starting LT

I said Reiff

I’m a firm believer in the idea that you build a team starting with the lines. Reiff is an excellent Tackle, and could be the cornerstone of the Redskins line for a decade. IMO theres going to be plenty of WR talent left when the 2nd rolls around (Sanu, Adams, possibly Jeffrey), but nowhere near the OL talent that Reiff brings to the table.

by P_Roach17 on Feb 4, 2012 2:26 AM EST reply actions

I agree

Whoever does come here if it’s not a mobile RGIII had better like bird watching and star gazing. Bring in Grubbs, draft Reiff and a center. We can get a wide reciever later in the draft. If Toon is available in the third then I’d take him.

by Fred Dudley on Feb 4, 2012 6:27 AM EST up reply actions

I said Reiff

I have said in the past that I don’t believe that the Browns will draft RGIII and he will fall to us at six. But seeing how you have the Browns taking him, I go with our new left tackle, Riley Reiff, and move TW to the right side.

by Fred Dudley on Feb 4, 2012 6:25 AM EST reply actions

Reiff or Martin

Either one would be a huge upgrade at RT,and maybe a cornerstone LT.By signing Meyers at C,or Grubbs from free agency, wed have one of the top OL in the NFL.But it would be REAL hard to pass on Blackmon if he was there, great attitude, good character,TEAM LEADER,and sick football skills…id go with …………………………………………BLACKMON!!!!!!! Terrell Owens without the drama!!!!

by fatazfoot on Feb 4, 2012 8:28 AM EST reply actions

I am down with the best player available.

I think we get Blackmon or Claiborne so I will be happy either way

Ditto

"Dominant" is an adjective.
"Dominate" is a verb.
We'll work on "Dominance" once we get the first two figured out.

by Reedskin on Feb 5, 2012 11:26 AM EST up reply actions

i selected blackmon!!

but i fully expected us to trade this pick back if rg3 isnt there….

by o0sean on Feb 4, 2012 10:06 AM EST reply actions

If this is the game we're playing I say Reiff.

I see it as more cushion for the pushin'

by iH8dallas on Feb 4, 2012 11:23 AM EST via mobile reply actions

You definitely take Blackmon

The lack of tradeback though gives you less options in the 2nd round.

We HAVE to take a QB at the top of the 2nd if we take Blackmon in the first. Tanenhill is likely gone. Foles and Weeden maybe on the board. I say you take Weeden at the top the 2nd (might be a stretch, but if we got Blackmon it is probably worth it).

Then you focus on the OL a little more in FA as opposed to the draft.

by tman5 on Feb 4, 2012 12:35 PM EST reply actions

And your list of tackles that can play in the zone blocking system consists of…

Who?

by Skins Fan '77 on Feb 5, 2012 12:39 PM EST up reply actions

Fair enough

I just really am not a fan of the FA WR route. Makes me want to take a WR in the draft. The idea of having Blackmon and Hank for years to come is so nice.

sorry

Misread the thread tree. SBN app needs some work :(

by tuckwell on Feb 7, 2012 2:09 PM EST via iPhone app up reply actions

I would get a T in the 2nd rd if i took Blackmon at 6. maybe Zebrie Sanders, Potter or Adcock. get a QB in later rounds like Cousins or BJ Coleman

by Highspeed30 on Feb 7, 2012 9:13 AM EST up reply actions

Another season of Turnstile Brown is not gonna cut it.

I wouldn’t mind Blackmon, but getting a top two tackle is too good to pass up.

P_Roach17

Thanks for putting this together. I would really appreciate if you could add links to each teams’ sbnation post for their vote, rather than just a link to each team’s general information page.

by orakpophobia on Feb 4, 2012 11:58 PM EST reply actions

Great idea Orakpo, will do

as soon as I figure out how to do so haha. Never really tried to link/do anything like that before, but ill get it up. In the mean time i’ll post the top 3 vote getters for each team. Note that voting occurred after i submitted the pick (I should probably close the pole at the appropriate time). The Viking’s pick was Claiborne, however, 2 days later Blackmon passed him in the voting so its a little skewed.

Colts – Andrew Luck: 561 votes (85%) RGIII: 50 votes (7%) Justin Blackmon: 15 votes (2%)

Rams – Matt Kalil: 181 votes (55%) Justin Blackmon: 121 votes (37%) RGIII: 11 votes (3%)

Vikings – Justin Blackmon: 232 votes (37%) Morris Claiborne: 231 (36%) RGIII: 76 votes (12%)

Browns – RGIII: 162 votes (48%) Justin Blackmon: 128 votes (37%) Trent Richardson: 18 votes (5%)

Bucs – Trent Richardson: 45 votes (45%) Justin Blackmon: 41 votes (41%) Luke Kuechly: 4 votes (4%)

forgot to mention

I didn’t link the team names to their respective sites, it did that automatically.

Hey Guys

Been reading this blog for a couple months and decided to join. I am 21 years old and have been a skins fan all my life and am loyal to them till the day I die. HTTR!

Man if this was the mock draft I wouldn’t mind drafting Blackmon at all and dealing with the QB situation either in the next round or FA. He would give next seasons QB a great target and if Hank pans out that could be dangerous….

by menikmati on Feb 5, 2012 3:11 AM EST reply actions

I voted blackmon

whoever our new qb is he will apreciate blackmon as a target .top offensive lineman have not shown they are worth in the last few years there have been bust after bust wuth top olineman ( eugene monroe, jason smith, russell okung, levi brown, andre smith) and if trent get his piss clean he can be added to list too. I would rather take the impact playmaker than take a chance on another top o-lineman we have brown and willie smith I dont belive in draftinh for a wanted upgrade at tackle over a real need at wideout

by taylor21 on Feb 5, 2012 8:15 AM EST reply actions

Yeah, only top offensive line bust out

Never seen it happen with any other position.
Do you really think that we are weaker at wide receiver then at tackle? I don’t think that statement is very defensible

The world looks mighty different when you're peeking out your belly button

by Skins Fan '77 on Feb 5, 2012 12:45 PM EST up reply actions

we know where we are at Tackle.....

WR is still a ?. We have no clue as to how Hank and Paul are going to respond after a full off season. I will be disappointed if we select a WR in the first 3 rounds. Of course this stand is very likely to change over FA,

"Please don't dominate the rap, Jack, if you got nothin' new to say."-Robert Hunter

by MagicHat on Feb 5, 2012 2:07 PM EST up reply actions

yes I do think we are weak at wr

who is a playmaker at this point ……….. nobody we have guys with good hands that can catch a 1st down. But we have no one at wr that can break a tackle and go all the way . so in my opinion we have a need at wr. moss/ gafney / stalworth/ armstrong/ all 30+ none are the future of this franchise. so that leaves paul/ hank/ and robinson all question marks at this point none are proven threats. so yes I want a playmaking WR over an upgrade at right tackle. also its much easier to find a right tackle in later rounds than it is to find a playmaking WR now if we target bowe or colston my mind woud be changed and I would pick rieff

by taylor21 on Feb 6, 2012 9:11 AM EST up reply actions

Not all top lineman are bust

Jake Long and Joe Thomas are the best in the league. I wouldn’t call TW a bust just yet but that being said he is better suited to play right tackle. It doesn’t matter who is throwing the ball and who is catching it if they don’t have time to get the pass off. If we are bringing in Orton, Manning, or Flynn as some reports say then we need to protect them. As far as we know right now, the reports are simple rumors. Shanahan isn’t going to tip his hat either way. After watching the Giants win the Super Bowl I really don’t care who we bring in anymore as long as it makes the Redskins better. I would rather take Reiff or trade back (and still try to get Reiff or DeCastro) and find a reciever in the later rounds. The more I hear about Bowe, the more I’d like to bring him in.

by Fred Dudley on Feb 6, 2012 10:13 AM EST up reply actions

jake long and joe thomas are the exception

If you look back most top lineman have been busts eugene monroe/ jason smith/ andre smith/ levi brown/ russel okung/Brandon albert. Offensive line is overated. The giants o-line was suspect they were last in rushing and they are champs twice more due to outstanding reciever play than great blocking same with the packers last year. So that’s why I would prefer WR over o line

by taylor21 on Feb 6, 2012 11:56 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Do you have any empirical evidence to back up your arguments? Or just generic assertions?

most top lineman have been busts

Blackman

Whoever it is take a Blackman. I heard hims can catch a ball quite nice.

Blackmon

Had to go with the best player available. Only other people I was considering were Reiff and DeCastro. Without trades I would have gone with Decastro over Reiff if we had to pick OL.

by redskinhokie88 on Feb 7, 2012 11:05 PM EST reply actions

By th way P_Roach

It appears Blackmon should have been picked by the Vikings in your fan draft. Claiborne had one less vote. Just wondering why you chose him over Blackmon

by redskinhokie88 on Feb 7, 2012 11:10 PM EST reply actions

He mentioned this above

but it was inside another comment so I can understand missing it.

Note that voting occurred after i submitted the pick (I should probably close the pole at the appropriate time). The Viking’s pick was Claiborne, however, 2 days later Blackmon passed him in the voting so its a little skewed

by tuckwell on Feb 8, 2012 12:23 AM EST up reply actions

sorry guys have been crazy busy

But the pick is in. Blackmon ran away with this thing pretty early on to my surprise, I really thought Reiff would get a much higher percentage of the vote. Anyway, good luck gentleman, and I hope your FO puts you guys in the position to get RGIII (although I wouldn’t be psyched to play him twice a year haha)

by P_Roach17 on Feb 8, 2012 1:56 AM EST reply actions

Took Reiff

Blackmon has no value at #6. He has a higher chance of being a bust than he does at being elite. Average size, average speed, and he will have problems creating separation from NFL CBs.
