Does RG3 Start from Day 1?

Say we do whatever it takes to trade up for RG3 and therefore have a deficit of picks this year and next. Given the glaring holes throughout our roster and our suspect O-line, Do we give RG3 the starting job from day one hoping his athletic ability makes up for our talent-deficient o-line or do we let him sit for half a year or the whole year letting him get accustomed to the speed of the game.

Star-divide

I realize this is just really an opinion on how you handle rookie QB's and I am just looking for where everyone stands on this. There is always the risk of throwing a rookie QB into the fire and ruining his development because of all the hits he takes. There is also the benefit of letting the rookie QB take those lumps and it allows him to grow and learn from experience. With our o-line, whoever is at QB is likely to be hit a lot. Do you believe RG3 is the type of prospect who will be able to take these hits and learn, maybe even lessen the hits because of his athletic ability? or would you rather give him time to sit and learn while we build up the rest of the team around him thinking we have our franchise QB of the future.

Personally, I think RG3 is a transcendent talent and will become an elite QB in the league. I believe he has the athletic tools and the mental ability and work ethic to reach his potential. I also believe he would benefit from being allowed to start from day one and learn on the job, much the same way Newton did this year, although I believe Carolina's o-line is way better than ours. But what are your thoughts?

IF Shanahan trades up for RG3...

he has a plan in mind. I would venture to stipulate, he would intend to play RG3 from game one. With a talent such as his, you throw him into the fire. Also, it gives HC ammunition to explain to owner of the development of the team, IF they end up with a losing record.

I do take exception to your scenario…

glaring holes throughout our roster and our suspect O-line

You are making this statement BEFORE FA, so I don’t know how you can determine that these holes would exist at the time of the drafting of RG3. A couple of signings of OL could dramatically improve this area. Perhaps, this question would be better around draft time…

Very true

Thats a valid point, I’m just looking at our roster as it currently is without us signing any FA’s. You are correct, with a couple OL signings we would have a much improved line and it would change everything.
I was just looking at it without us signing anyone, obviously we will make some additions but theres no telling who or to what extent they will improve our team.

I dont think the O-line is as bad as most think it is.

Trent Williams should be better in his 3rd season.
Kory lichtensteiger back from injury
Hurt, Smith, Polumbus will be better in another year in the program
Chester was solid all year.
Brown was not great but was playing through injuries should be better if healthy
Montgomery showed that he can be a starter.

But they can be upgraded at RT, RG or C in FA

The WR position need some attention as well
Moss lost a step
Gaffeny = possesion receiver
Hankerson is still unknown but showed some promise
Paul have shown he can play special teams and block not many catches
Aldrick Robinson has a lot of speed but is really raw
Austin still unkown of what he really can do
Armstrong is a speed receiver that Rex could not get the ball to downfield

I would look to add to the WR’s in this draft and in Free Agency and see who makes this team in training Camp.
WR’s I like in the Draft in the mid to later round sleepers
Brian Quick 6’3" Appalachian state can be a complete WR high ceiling possible #1 type
Marvin McNutt 6’2" Iowa plays big and great hands decent speed for size.
T.Y Hilton 5’10" Florida Int 4.3 speed elusive KR/PR skill good WR skills Steve Smith typ
A.J Jenkins 6’1" Illinois good speed nice hands good route runner
Jeff Fuller 6’4" Texas A&M legit NFL size big strong hands
Juron Criner 6’2" Arizonia good speed and exceptional hands will fight for the ball
Chris Givens 6’0 Wake Forest good speed and route running
DeVier Posey 6’2" Ohio State big time WR prospect will all around skills
Greg Childs 6’3" Arkansas Big body nice speed coming off injury can be UDFA or 7th round steal

Jammal Brown needs to go

Licht could very well not return to pre-injury form by next season.
Montgomery is average
Chester is fine.
TW is good, but might vanish for a year.

Not very stable.

This

Anybody who thinks this line can be left as is for 2012 needs to have their head examined (and I’m also looking at Kyle Shanahan when I say this)

WR

another WR… Jarrett Boykin from VT. Not sure where he is projected, but he has giant hands, decent speed.

Hurt, Smith, Polumbus will be better in another year in the program

That means they’re still project NFL players who are currently back ups at best.

Brown was not great but was playing through injuries should be better if healthy

If, huh?

Malcolm Kelly should be better if he becomes healthy as well

How the hell can you expect Brown to be healthy?

Q-tip

If we trade up for him, yes.

If he falls to us, for that matter, yes. Anyone who thinks he’s winning 10 games as a rookie is smoking some good stuff, though. Starting a rookie quarterback with the line and skill players we have is a recipe for a losing season, I don’t care WHAT QB it is. Andrew Luck would be the same. If we start a rookie at QB next year, we’re going to lose more than we win, period.

The hope is that he learns quickly and in two or three seasons, is performing at an All-Pro level. The danger is that he doesn’t, that he learns bad habits in the face of a defensive onslaught every game, and that he never realizes his potential. Without significant FA spending or a lot of good draft picks (and in this case we can’t have the picks) he won’t have the protection he needs or the weapons to throw to, and we’re trending more in the danger direction. This is the core objection from those of us who do NOT want to trade up. We don’t need a David Carr situation here.

by tuckwell on Feb 12, 2012 10:20 PM EST reply actions

Rather you believe or not .

We will win at least 10 games next year easily if we get him providing he plays every game , the reason im saying this is because we will probaly sign a few FAs on offense and as good as RG3 is he will be able to scramble around just enough to find a wiode open reciever and if he dont then he will run and get first downs easily . Rather you wanna believe it or not he is alot like cam newton and before all is said in done he will be rookie of the year either with us or with someone else so we better get on the ball and draft him period . If you say i am on stuff thats fine wanna share a drag lol .

by washingtonwin on Feb 13, 2012 12:35 PM EST up reply actions

How many games did Cam win?

Panthers went from 2-14 to 6-10. They didn’t magically have a winning season. Why? Cam is a great athlete but not a great quarterback yet. Griffin will have the same problem. NFL defenses are far faster, more complex and difficult to read than anything he saw at Baylor. It will take time, and more than one season, for the lightbulb to really turn on. If you’re expecting ten wins out of this rookie, you’re setting yourself up for failure. But that’s kinda how you operate, so whatever.

by tuckwell on Feb 13, 2012 1:36 PM EST up reply actions

If we can win with rex then we can win even more with RG3

Rex might have won 5 games this year and could have won a few more game as well but didnt , what do you think going to happen if RG3 comes in here and cuts the int in half or more that alone could win 5 more games . Im not saying he will single handly win all the games im saying he will be a big part in it , and like i said before if we sign just a few FAs on offense we will win 10 games but it will also depend on who we draft and i think if we get RG3 alone we will win at least 10 games . I believe as you say the way i operate , well i was off last year by 1 game and the previous 2 years i hit it right on the mark can you say that hmmm? i think not !!!

by washingtonwin on Feb 13, 2012 3:34 PM EST up reply actions

but we didn't win with Rex. In fact we were the 6th worst team in the league

we need help al over the place

by smutsboy1 on Feb 13, 2012 4:22 PM EST up reply actions

Why do you think a rookie QB is going to have less INTs than Rex?

Since you keep pointing to Cam Newton, last season he threw 21 TDs and 17 INTs. Griffin will have the same issues adjusting to the NFL, and will probably throw more INTs than Grossman did last year (16). He could easily throw more TDs than Grossman (12) but that doesn’t mitigate the turnovers. He’s also going to take hits in the open field and will fumble the ball a few times.

How about this: we sign a few FAs, including a QB, draft a new right tackle, guard, CB and WR, and THEN you might be looking at a ten win season. Doubtful, but possible. I’d say within two games of .500, so anywhere from 6-10 wins.

Rookie QB, minus a bunch of high picks in the draft, plus too many overpaid FA vets because we couldn’t draft anybody decent, equals within two games of 5-11. Yeah, we might win 7. We could just as easily only win 3.

Look at RG3 stats at baylor

He is very accurate passer and he does not throw hardly any interceptions , if you look at his stats you will see this . Plus our defense was way better than carolinas which makes a huge difference as well. Besides rex sucks as well as beck , . Well we will see i guess this year coming up and i hope you eat your own words which would be a good thing for our team . ( no offense ment though ).

by washingtonwin on Feb 13, 2012 7:24 PM EST up reply actions

Yes Cam only won 6 games with the panthers but.....

There defense is what kept there level of play down. Give Carolina our defense and they are most likely in the playoffs.

300% improvement in the win column is nothing to sneeze at

and neither is going from 32nd in offense to top5 or wherever they ended up

by DCrez on Feb 14, 2012 3:47 PM EST up reply actions

It certainly can be.

Going from 1 to 3 is 300% improvement, too. My point is that a hotshot rookie quarterback is no panacea to the problems we have short-term. In addition, I would posit that by hamstringing the team’s ability to bring in fresh young talent around that quarterback, a step backwards is not out of the question.

by tuckwell on Feb 15, 2012 1:49 AM EST up reply actions

Gotta start him

If we trade up for him then he’s got to start right away. Even though Shanny’s the type that like guys to earn there way into playing time when you trade up for a qb from 6 to 2, you’re planning on starting him.

I think we’ll see a healthy amount of Bootlegs and Running plays. Get him moving so that his speed can help him avoid some big hits in the pocket just make sure he knows he can throw the ball away.

by skinsfan28 on Feb 13, 2012 8:36 AM EST reply actions

Rg3

If this was to happen, then we better beef up that oline.Would be great if we got rg3 and a burner of a recever to boot. His ability to scramble would make other teams repect it just like the NFl did with vick.Still need hep with our secondry, theres some good FA out there that would help out, bottom line get Rg3.

Under the new agreement

Rookies are signed to a four-year deal… if you trade up that high to get somebody, he damned well better be starting in the first year; if not, you definitely have overreached.
That being said, if we do trade up, we had better find some way to build an offense around him pretty damn quick… otherwise, you can count on him walking at the end of 2016.

The world looks mighty different when you're peeking out your belly button

by Skins Fan '77 on Feb 13, 2012 10:43 AM EST reply actions

absolutley

you dont make that kind of move unless your sure he the guy
bring him off the bench in preseason to build up his confidence against weaker opponents that by week 1 he should be ready to start

by taylor21 on Feb 13, 2012 10:58 AM EST reply actions

Play him right away he is ready .

I will say play him right away , RG3 will find players open at wide reciever . We have a few good wr now its just that we never had a good QB good enough to get them the ball . If RG3 starts right away he will do just as good as cam newton did in the first year and RG3 will win rookie of the year either with our team or with another team , he is that good . I will even go as far as saying he will even throw for around 3,900 yards or over 4,000 yards . Everyone will be shocked at what he can do for this team if we get him and you can take that to the bank .

by washingtonwin on Feb 13, 2012 12:44 PM EST reply actions

I don't care how many yards he throws for.

Cam threw for over 4,000 this year. As I said above, there wasn’t even a winning record involved, much less playoffs. Quit expecting that kind of success. This is what happens, we overreach on a guy, then expectations get blown WAY out of proportion, people think the kid will win the Super Bowl every year for sixteen years running, and when it doesn’t happen, the fans turn on him and the team, the owner fires the coach, and we all bitch and moan about the QB bust from Aught-Twelve.

by tuckwell on Feb 13, 2012 1:40 PM EST up reply actions

First of all .

If we get RG3 this will be the first year i predict a winning season so whats wrong with that ? Its just like i told my brother inlaw when the first year we went to see the redskins play new england i told my brother inlaw when i seen brady play the redskins that brady was going to take the starting job from drew bledso and he was going to take the patriots to the super bowl a few times and now its 5 SUPER BOWLS LATER and i think RG3 is our guy thats going to take us to the super bowl one day because i believe he is the real deal for our team .

by washingtonwin on Feb 13, 2012 3:42 PM EST up reply actions

I like the all in comment, cause we need to trade down from 2nd

We put Bradford in from the start and Shurmur tweaked the offense so Sam could get rid of the ball fast which kept him from getting hit so much. So the McHoody goes to 7 and 9 step drops offense, and with our crappy WR’s and wothless O-Line Sam gets more sacks than anybody in the NFL. People say he regressed this year…..DUH! you would to with 76 sacks on your body.

Anyway the point is a rookie can be successful if they tailor the offense for him.
