My agenda as Redskins GM

Just for fun, I have taken up the responsibility of running my beloved Redskins as their new pretend general manager. Here is my agenda:

1. First and foremost, Secure a franchise quarterback. This will involve a trade. I don't want any of the short term answers FA is offering and I am not totally sold on Matt Flynn. I want this position to be taken care of for at least the next 10 years. This is why I pick up the phone and make the call to the St Louis Rams to land Sam Bradford. The compensation would be our 1st rounders this year and in 2013. We would be taking on $13mil for the next 4 years, but we'd have our long term solution. Drafting Luck would have been my first choice, but getting Bradford cost us far fewer picks.

2. Now that QB is settled, we resign our free agents. London Fletcher is a no brainer. I'd also resign Adam Carriker, Kendrick Gholston, LaRon Landry - short term only, Rex Grossman cheap and also short term with the understanding he is a backup, Will Montgomery, Tim Hightower, and Kory Lichtensteiger. Keyaron Fox and Bryan Westbrook are signed for special teams. If you take away the blocked kicks, Graham Gano actually had a decent season, so I'd give him one more year, with the understanding that we will be bringing in competition during camp. Fred Davis will be franchised.

3. Free Agency. Sign CB Brandon Carr, C Chris Myers, G Ben Grubbs, WR Mario Manningham

4. Cut or trade CB DeAngelo Hall, WR Anthony Armstrong, QB John Beck, KR Brandon Banks

5. Now to the draft. Our 1st round pick went to the Rams in the Bradford deal, so we start our draft in the early 2nd round. I'd trade back to the mid to late 2nd while gaining another 3rd rounder using the NFL Draft Value Chart. I'd take T Mitchell Schwartz from Cal with that 2nd round pick. I look for him to eventually take over at right tackle. With our first pick in round 3 I'd go for CB Casey Hayward from Vanderbilt. Our other 3rd rounder would be used on WR Juron Criner from Arizona. I see him as a big red zone target, plus he sure made Foles look good on deep jump balls in college. Our first 4th round pick would be S Winston Guy Jr. out of Kentucky. I'd be looking for him to possibly replace Landry if he doesn't come back 100% from injury. With the 4th rounder we got from the Raiders in the Jason Campbell deal, I'd take ILB Chris Marve of Vanderbilt. I see him as an eventual replacement for Fletcher once he finally retires. I'd take QB Brock Osweiler of Arizona State with our 5th round pick. He'll replace Grossman and be our long term backup behind Bradford. With the 6th round pick, I'd build up the line depth some more with G Stephen Good from Oklahoma. With our final pick, we take K Randy Bullock from Texas A&M in the 7th round to push Gano for the kicker job.

Our Redskins roster going into camp would look something like this:

QB: Bradford, Grossman, Osweiler

RB: Helu, Royster, Hightower

FB: Young

TE: Davis, Cooley, Paulsen

WR: Moss, Gaffney, Manningham, Hankerson, Criner, Paul

T: Williams, Brown, Smith, Schwartz, Polumbus

G: Grubbs, Chester, Hurt, Good, Lichtensteiger

C: Myers, Montgomery

DE: Jenkins, Bowen, Carriker, Gholston

NT: Cofield, Nield

ILB: Fletcher, Riley, Marve, Fox

OLB: Kerrigan, Orakpo, Alexander, Jackson, White

CB: Carr, Wilson, Hayward, Barnes, Thompson, Westbrook

SS: Landry, Guy Jr., Doughty

FS: Otogwe, Gomes

K: Gano/Bullock

P: Rocca

LS: Sundberg

KR: Austin

Well, I'll probably get a lot of flack for this, but at least I had fun playing GM. HAIL TO THE REDSKINS!!!

Disagree on a later draft QB, Grossman is a perfect and cheap backup

Grossman is a perfect and cheap backup

by HogHunter on Feb 11, 2012 11:25 PM EST up reply actions

The notion of Grossman not being a good backup

Is ridiculous. Had Grossman played this whole season, we could have been looking at 7 wins. A backup who can get 7 wins is a good backup.

Expecting a backup to do more than a .500 season is a pipe dream that most NFL teams don’t have and can’t afford.

by tman5 on Feb 12, 2012 11:58 AM EST up reply actions

Here's

Teams bring about 90 players to training camp, so there will still be numerous camp invites. And I do have Grossman there for this coming season, but he’ll be 32 when the season starts, so I don’t see having him as a primary backup long term. Until Osweiler get’s the offense down, Grossman’s the best option at the #2 QB. That’s at least what my thought process was. Thanks for the feedback!

Gomes has never backed up FS

They deliberately put him in the box instead of Reed because Gomes did not show coverage knowledge/ability.

Other than that, I’m fine with your roster and with letting them all fight it out (including both safety positions) for roster spots.

Big question is the Bradford trade and if we believe he can develop (was not great last year), how he will fit our offense, etc.

by TCO on Feb 12, 2012 10:42 AM EST reply actions

OP had Gomes at FS, not SS

I don’t think the skins have tried him at all outside of the box.

As for Bradford, well…love can change with time. Just ask John Beck.

by TCO on Feb 12, 2012 7:22 PM EST up reply actions

So you give up two firsts for Bradford?

Taking on his huge contact, instead of adding a 2nd round pick and getting a QB with much less wear and tear.

Then…you cut Hall? Dislike his trash talking, fine. Be mad at a few blown plays. But…shut down his side of the field while covering the other teams top receiver. He held Larry Fitzgerald in check for and entire game. Push him to 3rd corner if you would like, but he is not bad enough to cut.

But…shut down his side of the field while covering the other teams top receiver.

hahaha. Good one.

Was he a turnstile?

He gave up what? 1-2 plays a game. He wasn’t getting burnt every play.

He isn't the best but he's fine for right now

The bad plays are more at the forefront of everyone’s mind. A change needs to be made but not this year

by Bryan Black on Feb 12, 2012 12:39 PM EST via Android app up reply actions

I think the option should certainly be explored......

I believe hat it would be better serve the organization to send him on his way. Makes no sense to move him to 3rd corner, as copious mentioned, not for what we are paying him. I think he is a liability on the field, in front of the media, and I strongly suspect in the locker room as well.

Was he a turnstile?

Yes.

http://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2012/01/12/cornerbacks-a-glance-at-the-2011-numbers/

Player – targets – receptions allowed – reception % – yards allowed

Deangelo Hall – 94 – 63 – 67% – 858

Good for 4th worst in yards allowed and 7th worst in completion % allowed. That’s a turnstile any way you look at it.

He’s in the bottom 10 on both almost every year.

Copious - Totally agree on D Hall - he is a fine CB

I just don’t understand people who want to mess with one of our strong points, when there are some very weak areas. Aside from QB, safety is a potential disaster area, if neither landry nor Atogwe come back healthy – and it is a dead serious question for both. I wouldn’t want to see us open the season with Doughty and Gomes.

by Donnio1234 on Feb 12, 2012 4:37 PM EST up reply actions

I think we need a 3rd starter.

So you can match guys up based on their strengths vs. opponents receivers. The liabilities are after hall and Wilson on the depth chart. Also…having better and/or consistent safety play helps.

If I recall...

He got burned deep for a TD by Fitz in that game as well LOL.

Hall’s contract details: 2/27/2009: Signed a six-year, $55 million contract. The deal contains $22.5 million guaranteed, including a $15 million option bonus. 2011: $4.5 million (+ $500,000 workout bonus), 2012: $6 million, 2013: $7.5 million, 2014: $9 million, 2015: Free Agent

Once, on a zero blitz when the pressure didn't get there.

Otherwise…he held him in check all day.

Redskins @RGIII - 2012

by Copious 1 on Feb 12, 2012 8:29 PM EST up reply actions

It wasn't a 0 blitz

we only sent 5 rushers I believe. And there was tons of pressure there iirc, Kolb had to throw over Ryker’s head. Plus, it was still a 71 yard TD he gave up.

by TheDeepBall on Feb 12, 2012 10:45 PM EST up reply actions

Not to defend Hall

But are you REALLY holding it against him to give up a few plays to LARRY FITZGERALD?

Where do they teach you to talk like this? In some Panama City "Sailor wanna hump-hump" bar, or is it getaway day and your last shot at his whiskey? Sell crazy someplace else, we're all stocked up here.

by CJHutch on Feb 13, 2012 3:14 AM EST up reply actions

No.

I am holding it against him that he gave up 67% of the passes thrown in his direction and 858 yards this season – good for bottom 10 in the league in both categories.

Everyone says "I'll sign XYZ player" but no one explains why the hell some of these guys would want to come here

Why is that even a question? The vast majority of players go to the team that offers them the best contract.

So we just automatically outbid everyone ala 2002?

everyone is so quick to point out that this is a business...

for the players it is the same. Players understand the system, know that their window to make $$$$ is short, and can be talked into rather easily. This has been the case since Reggie White signed his GB contract, sending the NFL down this FA road…

by jgibbsfan1 on Feb 12, 2012 7:30 PM EST up reply actions

So once again our strategy is to outbid everyone, no matter the cost, the way things have always been with Snyder?

that wasn't my point...

nor do I believe we will end up signing a BIG name (I don’t consider Myers or Grubbs to be huge names). We probably focus our attention on guys similar to last years signings, young, perhaps backups ready to breakthrough with starting gigs.

I was just answering your request for explanation…

Like the Myers signing, not as big on Grubbs. Is Grubbs a starter in this league and an upgrade on our line? Yes, I just dont think the price we would have to pay him would be worth the upgrade he gave us.
Signing Myers would be a huge upgrade for us and I think he would seriously consider us. He has excelled in the Zone Blocking Scheme, which we run. I also believe Houston has too many other high profile free agents and hope that they dont have room to keep Myers too. I believe he falls down on their priority list and is allowed to hit free agency and hope that we pursue him hard. He may only be able to give us 3-4 good years but it would be a considerable upgrade from what we have.

I like Carr and I like getting rid of Hall, but only if we have someone like Carr to put in his place. Hall is consistently one of the worst starting corners in the league, despite his penchant for big plays, which covers up his deficiencies. I thought it was a mistake when we signed Hall in favor of letting Rogers go and this past year has only validated that position.

by gskin53 on Feb 12, 2012 5:53 PM EST reply actions

I would have preferred to keep Rogers over Hall.....

But it was never an either/or situation. He wasn’t coming back, and that was completely unrelated to DHall.

by MagicHat on Feb 12, 2012 6:15 PM EST up reply actions

I totally agree with pretty much everything you said

The reason I did go with Grubbs was because I figured he’d be easier to ink than Nicks from the Saints and Lichtensteiger is coming off major knee surgery

by y2kctiger on Feb 12, 2012 6:52 PM EST up reply actions

I dont believe so

I think part of the reason he felt so disrespected by us was because of how we committed to Hall before securing his contract. I may be wrong, or way out of line. But I think if we had resigned Rogers before giving Hall his contract then he would have wanted to stay with us. I’m not sure if there were any other incidents that made Rogers not want to play for us, who knows for sure besides him. But I feel like when we got Hall we committed to him and Rogers felt that was disrespect directly towards him because he had been with us for so long and the Redskins basically said Hall was more important even though we had just acquired him.

by gskin53 on Feb 12, 2012 6:23 PM EST reply actions

no way ied get bradford.

the guy needs alot more of a team then rg3 would. plus that huge contract of his wouldnt leave us to get fa will need after trading the picks for him
