Why the Redskins should sign Peyton Manning

Before you kill me, hear me out.

I have been a redskins fan for a long time, But I was a huge Peyton manning fan and watched all their games. Many of you believe signing Peyton Manning would be bad for this franchise. However i don't see that.

I know he has the neck surgeries, but watching Peyton for all these years taught me something you never tug at the cape of superman. it is deadly to doubt Peyton. Yes it is a risk but so is Rex Grossman throwing the ball. How many times have we wished we had an elite quarterback, now we might have a chance to get the best top QB ever to play the game. We aren't signing Brett Favre here! this guy is 36 years old but I Believe he has 3 good years left in him. With Peyton, being down by 21 in there 4th quarter is not the end of the game. We have a chance to win more games. The Colts were a 2-14 team without Manning. Manning makes everyone on that team better. The offensive line i watched this year for Indy was nothing compared to the offensive line I saw protecting Manning. He gets rid of the ball really quickly. He makes those adjustments methodically. I do believe with Peyton Manning we are an automatic contender for the superbowl. The Colts defense played mostly not to lose but our defense plays to win. We will be a passing team but that's okay this is a passing league.

I know if peyton comes in here week 1 and lights up the place, this will be a steal of a signing. All i am saying if someone told you that the redskins had a chance to win the superbowl next year and it involved a risk with Peyton manning would you take it? I am tired of losing year in and year out, tired of being a wild card and just want to win the Super Bowl just once. With Peyton we can have that.

So if we put aside for a moment the need for a medical miracle

What makes you think that Shanahan’s will want to run Payton’s offense?
All those attributes that you attribute to Peyton Manning are to some degree product of the system and the players (and a domed stadium)

Oh yeah, and we still need that medical miracle. I really didn’t give a crap what a bunch of sportswriters who don’t do due diligence before they open their pie holes say, nerve damage is serious, you don’t work out or rehab nerve damage.
If Manning is able to throw a football with the same velocity and accuracy as he did two years ago this year, it will be a miracle.

The world looks mighty different when you're peeking out your belly button

i dont

Agree at all that he is product of a system or that his play will suffer from playing outside. But to your point, all this talk about bringing him in is conditional on his health.

I believe they will explore him as a possible acquisition...

it will demonstrate to Snyder that they attempted it, but, in the end, I believe he will end up in Arizona. Here’s why -

1. Larry Fitzgerald – enough said
2. Division – weaker and no Eli
3. Arizona doesn’t have many other choices and they want him BADLY…

We have multiple options, most realistically trading up to #2 for RG3. Again, they will explore the possibilities, we will hear the reports, but, no, not in the end…

I tried to hear you out....

Everyone knows Peyton is/was one of the greatest QBs ever (I put him #1) .
We also all know that he is 36, had serious neck surgery, and runs a different offense than the Shanahans.

This post adds nothing more to that debate. You emphasize the first point (that everyone already knows) and ignore the second part (that a lot of people put more weight in than you).

Please bring something new to the table or you’ll get drowned out with all the other Maybe Peyton…? posts.

It's one thing to fight over trading up vs trading down but do we really have to fight over Peyton also?

How many times do we have to go down this road before lessons are learned? The Skins FO appears to be learning, we as fans need to do the same. Leave re-tread QB’s alone….

I know manning is hurt

But this opportunity comes once in a lifetime if he suceeds don’t you want it to be for us , but I also wants the skins to draft a quarterback regardless as a backup plan in the second round

manning

Signing him would give us at least 5 more wins, not from his arm.But from his IQ,and not turning the damn ball over on 1st and 10 in the redzone!SIGN HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by fatazfoot on Feb 1, 2012 5:45 PM EST reply actions

so we should sign the 36 year old quaterback

and as a back up plan keep rex. that way if peyton doesnt play well enough we can move him to 3d string and start rex right sounds like a plan anybody else having deja vu

Peyton has been cleared by the neurosurgen that performed the fusing. The graphic shown here is not the likely

place where the surgery occurred. The fusion involved two cervical vertebrae (There are C1 to C7). The C3 to C4 is my guess as to where the fusion took place, i.e., a titanium plate bridging those vertebrae plus a cage to include some of his bone. The bone growth in the cage has been successful if he has been cleared. The fusion has relieved pressure on the nerve roots going to the right and left side (long nerves going from the neck, shoulders, and hands.) This is my speculation based on my own fusion involving fusion at an additional level. While the term fusion sounds scary, it does not reduce neck mobility that much.

I would think that if we got Peyton we

would also draft some promising young QB. Also, signing Peyton would let us keep our draft picks (except possibly the second or third rounder used on a QB). The fly in that ointment is that apparently Peyton is not known for his mentoring skills. And there are the control and medical issues. But Shanahan wouldn’t sign him if he didn’t think he could work with him. Peyton could make it all moot by asking for too much money.

Retitle your post "Why the Redskins should give their fans false hope, and end up falling flat on their face again"

Dear Passionate fan, I know you are passionate, but please reply with a logical answer or I will ignore you.

by TerpsAllTheWay on Feb 1, 2012 9:03 PM EST reply actions

The very fact that he makes players around him that are mediocre at best look like high caliber players

is sufficient to make me say Manning is NOT the answer.
Our offense is made of mediocre players, and when you have a veteran qb that has 2-3 years at most left in his carrer that plays at level that Peyton does, you are simply deterring the rebuilding process. This guy, if plays as expected, will cover up the blemishes in our offense making it difficult to pinpoint needs for when Manning does retire..

Why waste our time on a relic

Why on earth would you want a guy 1st with a neck injury and could go out at any givin time ? 2nd why pay a huge amount of money for a guy past his prime and goes against our salary cap ? 3rd lets say he wins a few extra games then we are back to looking for YET another QB replacement AGAIN and we would end up picking around 15 to 20 th in the draft if he wins for just a year or 2 . 4th are you sure your not synder ? 5th why not build from the draft and get our QB while drafting up and not have to worry about a QB again for a long time ? I just can not understand why a person wanna a guy and waste our time for only three years knowing we are going to have to get YET another QB again when you can move up now and get one of the best guys out there as in RG3 . This is why the team is in this predicament NOW because we get OTHER PEOPLES LEFT OVER GARBAGE . Try building thru the DRAFT and not rebuilding thru other teams GARBAGE . Why do you think indys drafting luck for ? because they are not stupid , they know when to get rid of a guy and think to the future same way with phillly and McNabb . You get manning and this team will be set back 10 more years YET AGAIN for another stupid signing of a overpaid player past his prime .

by washingtonwin on Feb 2, 2012 6:37 AM EST reply actions

Exactly...

He would get us enough wins to place us deep in draft order, but not give us any realistic playoff chances so in a few years we’d be picking the Patrick Ramseys and Jason Campbells of the draft again.

I hope you guya all realize

that if Peyton’s not healthy enought to play, he’s going to retire. If he is healthy enough, he’ll remain in Indy.

Right now, my money is on him retiring.

I'll second that...

I just hope Dan Snyder’s money is in the same place yours is.

Truthfully, I don't think Danny's money matters this time

This is all on Peyton.

Put it this way……..the man has nothing left to prove in the NFL. 13 years career. Multiple MVP’s. Super Bowl ring. He will go down as one of the greatest to play the game. If you were him, would you come to DC? I say, hell no.

I know people are saying he’s a competitor, but this many is young in life. he has a family. He could also have about any job he wants in Media.

I don't see him returning to Indy

They’ll have Luck, Peyton is not known to be much of a mentor, the huge bonus – too many bridges have been burned. It will be a tough decision for Shanahan/Allen. They won’t go for Manning unless they think they can work with him (i.e., they aren’t going to change his methods or tell him what to do). It might come down to money – how much he wants, and will anybody else outbid us. I don’t know what will happen, and really can’t decide what the Skins should do, so I’m just sitting back and enjoying the show. Let the heavy thinkers worry about it.

You’re right, I would want no part in risking my health at his age. Peyton’s got it made as far as his post football career. The problem with having a ruthless spending owner is the thought that we will always spend the big bucks for the big names.

Hitting on the family note, I believe he and his wife Ashley just had another in 2011.

Can anyone honestly say...

…they could see Peyton Manning taking football orders from Kyle Shanahan?!?!

no matter how bad the Redskins want it, I don’t see Peyton considering it, at all!!

Plus, he’d never truly be the Redskin’s. He’d always be Indy’s QB at the end of his career – the Skins need to groom their own guy – look to the draft.

by Knightwchmn on Feb 2, 2012 10:39 AM EST reply actions

No and that may be exactly what the Skins need.

A personality like Peyton to audible Kyle’s calls and let Kyle see how it is supposed to be done, that is if Mike isn’t going to pull him aside and whip his ass for not recognizing our QBs strengths and weaknesses.

This is my opinion on why Peyton would be an acceptable signing

Although, I didn’t say this, it came from the bleacherreport.

“If Peyton signs with the Redskins, then the team would also be in position to land two of his former teammates in wide receiver Reggie Wayne and center Jeff Saturday. The Redskins would have addressed their quarterback, wide receiver and center positions and still have all of their draft picks. With the offense significantly better and a top-five NFC defense, the Redskins could contend for both the NFC East title and the NFC title. The Redskins would certainly devote much of their salary cap to acquiring Manning and Co., but it would only be for a few short years and they would not have leveraged their future by trading away draft picks.”

by MAJSkinsfan on Feb 2, 2012 10:51 AM EST reply actions

it's a reasonable opinion

but how long are those 3 going to keep playing?

by aFan4Life on Feb 2, 2012 11:17 AM EST up reply actions

No arguements from me.

I fully recognize their short futures, hence the comments about not leveraging the future. Obviously, I have no idea what Shanahan is going to do, but at this point I do trust him to make decisions for this teams future. Could imagine a scenario like this and still getting RG3? I know I have a better chance of starting and leading the Skins to the SB than for that to happen, but a year or two for RG3 to learn under Peyton is a nice thought. Anyway, I offered this just as a look at the potential upside of Peyton could mean for us. Again, I firmly stand behind drafting the best QB available, but I think its worth considering this potentiality.

We dont want Peyton because we like being 5-11 or 6-10

We do not want to be in the Superbowl because we would rather watch the commercials.
