In 2011 Ryan Kerrigan had a very good year for the Redskins as a Rookie. Sacking QB's and blocking passes, some of which he caught and ran with. Fans and writers alike point to an apparent downturn this season. Have been watching him closely last few games and have come to the conclusion that Ryan Kerrigan is playing his position very well and similar to 2011, but something is missing. I believe it is The Ryan Kerrigan / Adam Carriker chemistry from 2011.
When Adam Carriker was playing you would often see a good push against his man, which made the QB come out of his pocket or force throws. Kerrigan was able to take advantage of this when the QB moved or threw in his direction. Again, sacks and passes blocked.
I believe Ryan misses that often overlooked push by Adam Carriker. Jarvis Jenkins unfortunately has not been able to duplicate Carriker's push and I believe that is the main reason for Ryan's decline in stats. Probably true too that with Orakpo out, Ryan gets more double teams but that really hasn't jumped out at me. Could be too that he feels responsible or is being coached to maintane his lane more due to teams running over our LDE.
He is still a very valuable player. He is rarely caught out of position. Still hustles and makes good plays.
Differing opinions always welcome and expected.
