Moving on to WR
The QB talk has ben pretty much run into the ground and only time will tell what Shanahan and company will actually do. So I thought a realistic look at another position of need WR would be a welcomed departure. You may say we've done that too, but Dwayne Bowe will most likely be targeted by a contending team or two which will take the Redskins out of the running. I present two players who could significantly upgrade the position and with their combined salaries would make less than Bowe. Below you will only find basic stats and career numbers, if you want more info there is always google.
Robert Meechum: 27 y/o; 6'2"; 210lbs (4.4 40 yard dash) - Career 141 catched for 2,269 yards and 23 TDs.
Eddie Royal: 25 y/o; 5'10"; 185lbs (4.37 40 yard dash) - Career 206 catches for 2,107 yards and 9 TDs/ from Herndon, VA - The additional bonus with Royal is that he is a Kick and Punt returner (i,e, bye bye Banks who's good for nothing else IMO)

I voted rather quickly, for Royal...
I hesitate with Meachum, due to the perceived benefit of playing in N.O. offense (Brees QB, Colston / Graham weapons open up things for him), yet…
I didn’t realize he was so big. He may be an affordable option – experience, size, speed…
Who knows?
i hesitate for Meachum as well
I also worry that due to his numbers being inflated he’ll look for pretty decent money. It might not be in the Bowe or Colston category, but I think he’d look for a higher average than Santana got last year (and more years).
I’m not overly keen on bringing a receiver this year, but Royal is low risk so i’m fine with it.

I could see royal being a target
I think shanny drafted him, and he would be an upgrade over the stallworths, andersons, and armstrongs

I went Royal
I agree I think think Meachem is a system reciever who benefits from having Drew Brees throwing passes to him. Not really sure he’d be much better than Gaffney has been this year. Royal is more of a playmaker, which Shanahan has said is something he wants more of on offense, so I can see us making a play for him

I went neither
But if i had to pick one I would go Meachem, mainly cause he his bigger I am tired of these tiny receivers, and i think Meachem just might blossom with a change of scenery.
I dont see a signifcant upgrade with either player
but i do think WR is a concern that need to be addressed.
Meachum's bigger but he doesn't really use his size, similar to Gaffney
so it isn’t like he’ll dominate the jump ball or red zone.

Neither
Meachem is just in a good system and Royal is to fragile. And yes, Banks is not the answer either. We need a big, fast, reliable, respectable, young #1 WR. But what team doesn’t, right. Neither of those guys please. I am hoping Hankerson will step up.
"I love the smell of napalm in the morning"
Neither would be signed to be the #1 guy.
Royal would be 4th on the depth chart, but a key special teams piece.
I would envision Meachem competing for the 2nd or 3rd receiver spot, with the hope that Hank could lock-down the #1 spot.
Redskins @RGIII - 2012
I would rather just draft a guy to compete for the 2nd or 3rd WR spot.
I like a lot of the mid round WR’s in this draft, I think there are a lot of sleepers to be had
We 8 picks and 40 holes.....
can’t draft everyone!
Can we please get a mother f***ing QB we can be proud of?!?!?!?!?!?!
Royal is an upgrade over Banks as a return man and would be a nice 3rd-5th WR.
Banks is an average return guy and only a gadget player on O. I’d pass on Meecham.
@Callahan_9 on the twitter machine.
What would it cost us?
I think he was drafted in the third or fourth. What would we have to give up for him?
Keep in mind
Mike Wallace is most efficient as a deep threat.
Unless we have a QB who can hit him deep, he wouldn’t be the same Mike Wallace we have come to respect.

a first and a third rounder

I'd go
for Royal…hometown kid -
Moss-Gaffney-Hankerson-Royal- ______ – austin/paul/robinson/stallworth/FA’s+DP’s going for that 5th spot
Neither
Royal is another under 6ft receiver and Meachum is a system guy. If it meant Banks would be gone then yes to Royal

That would be the point of signing Royal.

It would be nice to see Royal and Gaffney together again.
I chose neither because I failed to think of the returner spot. And Royal would be good for depth. I suppose that would mean Banks and Terrence would be gone, and possibly Robinson. And we could hope Niles Paul will be effective next year. Then pick one good one in the draft. Like Criner or something. So Hankerson, Paul, Royal, Gaffney, Criner, Moss. Pretty good set of receivers (if Paul steps up). I’d be happy with that.
I have to choose Royal

So Carriker was a quarterback?
Looks like we haven’t explored all of our options….I think sacks would go down because Carriker could do a QB sneak everytime and swim move past the Dline…they’d never expect it!

+1
Still relatively young. Sort of fits what they did last year in terms of grabbing guys who were coming off their rookie contract.

agreed
though Royal would be the cheapest

Eddie Royal is a huge upgrade as a returner
I like the idea of Eddie Royal being a return specialist and lobbying for the 4th WR spot behind Tana, Jabar, and Hank.
I tend to lean on the side that Robert Meachem is a hit or miss system guy that would miss more often than not in our system.
"If there's football in heaven I will be thinking of Sean Taylor every time it thunders."
I could live with
Hank(X), Paul(H), Manningham(Z), then Moss, Criner(rookie), and Robinson/Austin(whichever one wins in preseason).
R.I.P JVP 1926-2012
I could live with that....
I think Manningham is underrated. However, I think Royal would be a much cheaper option.
I’m confused as to whether Tana is just old and slower now or if he just lost his spunk when he broke his hand??

You think will dump
Gaffney? or at least try to pick up a 7th (maybe 6th) for him.

*we'll dump

Gaffney had the best WR performance in the 2011 season. He kept the chains moving. It is obvious that the
Skins need better performance out of the WR group. The performance of other offensive players will also help the WRs.

Free agent WRs get so over-priced so quickly.

Eddie Royal
Replaces Banks & is in place when Moss steps down. I am not sure where we are at WR talent wise tho, with our offensive line & QB it is hard to tell how much talent or lack of we have at the position. I honestly think that Niles Paul could possibly be a very good WR for us, he has speed, good height, a great attitude & talent.
ditto for Paul

"By far the worst performers on the (R*dskins) are in the front office." – Sally Jenkins
The article in Pro Football Focus - Pressure and the 2011 Quarterbacks - gives some perspective on
the issue of where on the offensive team improvement could be most effected. Not having John Beck play QB is the most immediate hope for improvement since in three games he endured 16 sacks (team 41 – 25 Grossman) (10 against the Bills). “The coach said that not all of the Bills’ nine (10) sacks could be blamed on the team’s patchwork line. … Shanahan agreed that Beck, as well as receivers or running backs, were responsible for some of the sacks.” Apparently Grossman while having a large number of interceptions and fumbles had a favorable performance. “Rex Grossman with the fourth-lowest percentage (13.9) of pressure turned into sacks.” Yet in touchdowns to interceptions (5/11) Grossman was the 28th ranked QB. Some WR deflections also resulted in interceptions (? #). Grossman was the 20th ranked QB in “Pressured Completion Percentage, 2011” and 26th ranked in “Pressured Passing,” Grades 2011. “For QBs under pressure the average score is closer to a -7.1, so finishing above that mark is encouraging if nothing else.” Grossman’s -13.3% was worse than the NFL average which indicates that he was unability to handle defenders coming at him than all but 8 QBs included in the table. Mobility was the likely issue there so quarterback quality impacted WRs’ performance.
i dont think either one
solves our problem . we are looking for a #1 wr . Is meachem a #1 ? Royal ? And at what cost ?
i see improvement in Hankerson, and Paul plus a draft pick as a better answer if you arent going for a true # 1 wr
As for Gafney you keep him at 2.6 mil . Great production at low cost .
Make the run at Bowe or VJ , and if you Fail then look to the draft .
