Around SBN: L'Equipe Claims He's Coming To Chelsea On Five Year Deal

Howdy folks, some questions from an outsider

Hey everyone, i'm from Gang Green Nation, the Jets blog. I come in peace. Recently i've taken bit of a gander at some of the things the Washington Redskins have done the past few years in terms of rebuilding the team, and i've taken a bit of an interest in it. I'd like to know some more about the Redskins and have some questions if you guys wouldn't mind.

-How do you guys feel about Mike Shanahan as your team's head coach? If i'm not mistaken I know he wants to rebuild the team and has control of a lot of the personnel moves on the team. He's gotten some good things out of Evan Royster and Roy Helu, as he always seems to do with his running backs. Do you guys feel like he's a good head coach for your team's rebuilding process?

-What's the general feel on the quarterback situation? I've heard a lot of talk about trading up to get RG3, but i've also heard some names like Kyle Orton and Matt Flynn. I know John Beck didn't really work out, and Rex Grossman is... well, Rex Grossman, so some quarterback moves are gonna be made. There are also some other names in the draft like Nick Foles, Ryan Tannehill, and Brock Osweiler that i've heard. What are everyone's thoughts on this?

-How's the defense coming along? You did a pretty good Job against us til the last few minutes of the fourth quarter, and you ranked a respectable 13th overall after being I think 31st a year ago. I know London Fletcher and LaRon Landry are free agents, what do the plans seem to be with them? Also, why do I keep hearing that Deangelo Hall is good when he seems to give up a lot of plays? No offense when I ask that.

-What are the teams draft plans? Corner? Receiver? Offensive line? Quarterback?

-Is Shanahan on the hot seat after not improving the team's record this past season?

-aside from qb what are some other offensive areas of need?

Well that's about all I got. If you have any questions about the Jets, i'm more than happy to answer. I wish you guys the best of luck.

I am sure Jets fans can relate to bad QB play

The QB situation is the biggest debate with the Redskins at the moment. What is your thoughts on Mark Sanchez?? Grossman is a turnover machine and they have to upgrade the position.

The front 7 of the defense is good not great, and can use some secondary help. DHall is a playmaker, but he gives up plays cause he likes to gamble

Shanahan is not on the hot seat, but it is getting warm, and if he have another double digit loss season it could get real Hot

Mark Sanchez is an interesting story

He’s always had really pedestrian stats and generally average play, but he’s showed up in some big games and I think he led the league in fourth quarter comebacks over the last two seasons. Our OC of the last 6 seasons (Brian Schottenheimer) was really bad, and Sanchez never really fit into his system. The general consensus for us is that he really just his confidence this year because he always had really bad protection, and he never trusted his receivers. Most of us are willing to give him one more year under Tony Sparano provided he can get some better protection and some more trust with his receivers.

so would you say it was worth it to trade up to get him??

who was the QB before him Kellen Clemens? what did they give up for Sanchez?

by Highspeed30 on Jan 27, 2012 6:43 PM EST reply actions

The question about whether or not it was worth trading up is still really up in the air

We traded our first round pick that year, our second round pick, and three depth players who we didn’t really need. Before him we had Brett Favre for 2008. That experiment didn’t work out too well. The year before that we were juggling between Clemens and Pennington, but our O-line was garbage, so we ended up going 4-12 that year.

by darshv3 on Jan 27, 2012 6:48 PM EST up reply actions

I forgot about the Farve experiment

So what do you think about the Redskins QB’ situation from the outside looking in?? and do u have a opinion on RG3??

by Highspeed30 on Jan 27, 2012 7:02 PM EST up reply actions

If I were to make a suggestion

Try someone like Nick Foles or Ryan Tannehill with your second round pick. That way you could use your first rounder to focus on something else. And if it doesn’t work out, both Landry Jones and Barkley are coming out next year. And quite frankly, I think RG3 is a tad overhyped. As good as he is, his value is really only this high because Barkley and Jones didn’t come out.

Do the Jets want to get a RB ??? like Richardson?

or is Greene the answer cause i been hearing that the Jets may want a RB?

by Highspeed30 on Jan 27, 2012 7:19 PM EST up reply actions

that's also a debated topic

If richardson falls to us we’ll gladly take him. If not, we feel like we’re better off leaving that position alone. Shonn Greene did an admirable Job with the really bad playcalling throughout the season and iffy run blocking he had at times. We also have Joe Mcknight, who’s done a great Job as a KR, and could also be a very good third down back, but we’re not sure if he can handle that responsibility. Our new OC, Sparano, also wants to commit more to a power running game, which we feel is gonna help us out a lot. The main reason for not wanting upgrades at this position is however is that we have so many other positions that we need to upgrade that are a much bigger priority than RB.

by darshv3 on Jan 27, 2012 7:24 PM EST up reply actions

So do you think the Jets would trade up for Richardson?

i dont think so, and as far as QB is concerned with the Redskins we have waited and waited on QB and there are 2 Top QB prospects Luck is as close to a sure thing as you can get and I think RG3 is not far behind accurate, strong arm, mobile, smart and a leader. The Skins have gone the 2nd tier QB route before in Patrick Ramsey, Jason Campbell, kinda like Kellen Clemens for the Jets so i think they have to pull the trigger on a trade up, our defense is good at times especially in front 7 but need a play maker at WR

by Highspeed30 on Jan 27, 2012 7:32 PM EST up reply actions

I don't think we're gonna trade up

as i’ve said, there are too many other holes, and Mike Tannenbaum acknowledged the fact that he didn’t do a good job with the team’s depth. We can get by perfectly fine with Greene and McKnight. That’s my opinion anyway. Either way, I don’t see us trading up, for anything.

So you think a more wide open offense would help Sanchez?

or he was not used in the proper way. is Bart Scott coming back??

by Highspeed30 on Jan 27, 2012 7:57 PM EST up reply actions

Sanchez was used as if he was some weak armed west coast passer

which he’s not. He’s athletic, can roll out, and has a surprisingly strong arm. When he had Braylon Edwards he threw a really nice deep ball. He’s good off of play action too. Sparano said he wants to take deep shots and have a physical offense with a power running game, good protection, and some deep shots, which seems in Sanchez’s best interests. Bart Scott is also a question mark, he’s not that good anymore and usually comes off the field on passing downs. He may get replaced by someone else already on our roster, since Rex is good with developing defensive players The problem is that his money is guranteed, so we may not be able to save any cap space. We’re not sure exactly what’s going to happen, but we’ll see.

This is of interest due to my being a Browns fan first. I totally agree that RGIII is way overhyped, and was watched in college, though came from a conference with historically known weak defenses. The mid to late first is where he might actually have gone if there were more “Top Flight” QB’s in the draft.

I actually would like nothing better than to trade him away at pick #4. the only question is how much do you get in return? Well, that depends on how far some team has to move to get him. I could actually see one of your hated rivals going for him. Yes, I think jerry’s gonna talk to Holmgren on this very subject and we could very likely see this happen. The majority of the bunch over at DBN are RGIII koolaid drinkers, and in most cases I would be too, though I know my Browns are still at least two drafts away from really competing.

How do you guys feel about Mike Shanahan as your team’s head coach?
For the most part we like him. He thought we were a lot closer to contending his first year than was accurate, so he wasted some time with the likes of McNabb. Some people think he should throw rookies straight into the fire rather than ease them in over the season. But generally we see youth, change in attitude, more talent, more discipline, etc.

What’s the general feel on the quarterback situation?

We were kind of banking on RG3 AND Barkley coming out. Now we don’t know what to do. The generally worry is that if we don’t get someone THIS year, how much more patience will Dan Snyder have for Shanahan.

How’s the defense coming along?
The Dline is young a strong (lacks a TRUE NT). The LBs are the same, plus Fletcher, who is incredible but will need a replacement in the next year or two. the Secondary is weaker. DHall gets publicity cuz he makes big plays, but he is not reliable. When the offense sustains drives, the D plays VERY well. When the D has to stay on the field all game, they suffer.

What are the teams draft plans?
Needs are OL, QB, WR (#1 playmaker), ILB (groom behind Fletcher), SS (Laron may or may not be back), and 2ndary help. OL, QB, and WR are the biggest 3.

Is Shanahan on the hot seat?
Supposedly Shanny made Snyder agree to a long term 5 year overhaul. Some of us are skeptical of Snyder’s patience. We think he at least has 2 years left

Hey jets fan

You guys qb situation sucks bad…..od honestly rather be in our situation rather than thought we had our guy at qb and he ends up stinking like Sanchez……Do you guys like Rex Ryan up there?

by mr.snyderhireme on Jan 27, 2012 7:22 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Not a lot of us have that kind of a black and white view on Sanchez, some do.

Most of us like Rex, but we’re all confused as to how he “lost the pulse of the team” and we also get a little irritated with some of the bold things he says, as well as his incredibly blind faith in some really bad players like our Strong safety Eric Smith and Right Tackle Wayne Hunter. Those positions are probably going to be upgraded anyway, the Jets don’t always publicly state their true intentions. For example, they said that they expected Brian Schottenheimer back, but that was never the plan.

How do you guys feel about Mike Shanahan as your team’s head coach?

I think Mike has done a great job. Our roster was an abomination at the start of his tenure, but he has drafted well and made key acquisitions in Free Agency. Although it hasn’t shown in our record he has changed the culture of the team, if we can have an off-season as good as last years and settle the Quarterback position (easier said then done) we could be play-off contenders.

What’s the general feel on the quarterback situation?

Rex Grossman is just too inconsistent, on his day he is a good QB, but there is no way you can rely on him to play well for a 16 game season. You could do worse as a back-up though. It looks unlikely at this point that we’re going to be able to draft a franchise QB in this years draft, without sacrificing a big chunk of real-estate… There is a lot of debate regarding which direction will be better for the team, I’m from the school of though that adding more quality starters and depth to the team before we go out and get our guy would be a better move

How’s the defense coming along?

Our defense has been great this year, our front 7 is borderline elite. Five of those players have all been guys bought during Shanahans time here (Carricker, Bowen, Cofield, Kerrigan and Perry Riley)

The weakness of our defense has been the secondary Josh Wilson (another Shanahan pick up) was our best corner this season, DeAngelo Hall is a boom or bust player and we have very little in depth behind those two. Injuries to Laron Landry and Oshiomogho Atogwe ruined what could have been a fantastic safety pairing and instead we had to rely on Reed Doughty and DeJon Gomes who were mediocre at best.

What are the teams draft plans?

If RG3 falls to us, I think we’ll take him although it’s highly unlikely that he makes it past the Browns. If we can’t secure him I think we will use our second round pick on a QB and develop him behind Grossman or another FA QB

Our other priorities are;

A playmaking WR;
Solidifying our OL: (We’re a Guard and Right Tackle away from having a really solid unit)
Adding a starter and depth to our Defensive Backfield:
Finding a long term replacement for London Fletcher

Is Shanahan on the hot seat after not improving the team’s record this past season?

I think it could start getting a bit toasty if we don’t improve during the 2012/2013 season, but he is definitely our Head Coach moving forward.

Aside from qb what are some other offensive areas of need?

Guard,
Right Tackle,
Wide Receiver,
Depth at TE, Davis is one spliff away from a year on the sidelines (and a FA), Cooley looked like he was slowing down due to injuries which leaves us with Logan Paulsen who is a decent 3rd TE, but didn’t show much in his 6 starts this year.

There's always next year...

I'd like to see you guys make a run for the NFC east title next year

I can’t stand the Eagles or the Giants lol. You might be able to get Justin Blackmon in the first round, but that’s not a given, since i can see the Rams, Browns, or Bucs also wanting him. You could also maybe trade back a few spots and then get David DeCastro.

by darshv3 on Jan 28, 2012 9:16 AM EST up reply actions

Depending on how the #4 pick goes for Cleveland – I think the Rams go for Kalil, and the Vikes go Martin due to the fact that the LT position is very very weak on both teams.

I would like to trade away the #4 pick (RGIII) and drop back to the 6th spot, but somewherein between to the 10th spot.
