The Redskins Free Agent Quaterback

Most of us have our own idea about who we should draft. Or how we should aquire him. whether it be move up or move down or staying put I do expect 2 quaterbacks to be drafted this year. So knowing that we have to have at least one quatrback on our team with some type of NFL experience . So the following is a list of free agent quaterbacks and I was interested to see who you guys would prefer. I will not include Rex Grossman or soon to be cut John Beck. I wont go into great detail as Im sure UK is probally already working on this Im only going to name 6

Star-divide

Kyle Orton , Matt Flynn , Drew stanton, Brady Quinn , Josh johnson, and Chad Henne.

I tried to pick younger qbs some of whom never had a fair shot to play. My prefernce would probally be Chad Henne but I am interested in what you guys think. Who would be the best fit for our qb situation, best fit or our sytem and lastly the most cost effective so that we can bring in other free agent targets . I dontr believe we should look to free agency as our long term answer at qb but some believe Matt Flynn could be that guy. what do you guys think

If you are just interested in who people like better...

I can see why you would remove Grossy.

But the reality is, he needs to be on the list for consideration. IF we trade up to #2 for RG3 (or, heaven forbid Luck), Grossy is a good backup option, due to his familiarity of the system, and his relationship with Shanny Jr. (Remember, it is believed that not all the INTs were his fault – Not my wording).

Of those mentioned on the list, Orton has the most experience and production….

as muchas i hat to admit this

your right about rexy. I purposly didnt include him because I dont want him to return. I just think that if we keep rex that kyle wont push as hard for a new rookie qb and it will take longer for a rookie to get in. they have had a whole season to evaluate rex I hope they can see that we can never win consistently with him as our QB unless we play the giants 16 games

by taylor21 on Jan 26, 2012 11:01 AM EST reply actions

trust me taylor

we will get a rookie qb no matter if rex is here or not

by munson21502 on Jan 26, 2012 11:05 AM EST up reply actions

If we keep rex this will be the draft conversation

mike: hey kyle do you think we should move up for Rg3?
Kyle: no dad weve got Rex remember not all those pics were his fault
mike: ok hes still on the board at 6 how about now ?
kyle : I dont want rex looking over his shoulders let wait until the second round and grab a wr

In the regular season

Mike: its week 3 and rex has thrown 7 pics to 3 touchdowns should we make a switch?
kyle: no dad those wernt all his fault maybe he can show us something that we havent seen from him in his entire career I believe in this guy we ’ll prove everybody wrong

by taylor21 on Jan 26, 2012 11:19 AM EST up reply actions

If this were the conversation, which I dont think it would be, the back end of it would go like this:

Mike: “Hey Kyle, I hear what you’re saying about Rex, but I have a question for you. Do you want both of us to have NFL jobs going forward?”

Kyle: “Yes, dad.”

Mike: “Then shut the f* up, son.”

mike: ok hes still on the board at 6 how about now ?

That won’t happen.

two items...

one, the only scenario I see Rex as our STARTER, would be if we do not sign any FA QB, trade back to select some second level QB in the draft. I don’t believe for one second that this is the plan. It may become the plan, but a FA or moving up are going to be explored before they fall back on this plan.

Second, Rex, most likely will be a backup or, at most, transitional starter . He is a more logical choice for this position. Orton, or any of the other guys, aren’t going to be looking for a BACKUP role, plus they would have to learn the system.

by jgibbsfan1 on Jan 26, 2012 11:55 AM EST up reply actions

Kyle Orton

He’s shown the ability to play well in several different types of systems. He learned Kansas City’s system in a matter of weeks. So with months of preparation why would he have trouble in Washington.

Plus He’s better then Rex. Matter fact he took Rex’s job in Chicago.

by JeanBaptiste on Jan 26, 2012 11:32 AM EST reply actions

the only reason I think this would happen is because

Mike says McNabb is our starting quaterback
Kyle says no it should be rex hes much better
we resign McNabb and then a couple of games later bench him and move him to third string. so who is the head coach and who is the assistent
Off topic :why couldnt John Crompton get the same evaluation that Rex got in 2010 aftter we were out of the playoffs is he that bad?

by taylor21 on Jan 26, 2012 11:33 AM EST reply actions

...a couple games later?

McNabb had 13 weeks to prove he still had it and he failed.

by TheDeepBall on Jan 26, 2012 11:39 AM EST up reply actions

If you remember

he didnt play bad enough to be benched in that tampa game he actually got us in to field goal range to win or tie the game and gano missed it .I just thought maybe we could have thrown crompton out there against the vikings to see what he could do could he really be that much worse than beck. This whole mess over the last 2 years really makes you question our staff on there qb selection process what exactly do they see in bums

by taylor21 on Jan 26, 2012 11:52 AM EST up reply actions

actually he was pretty bad in that Tampa game cost us a lot of point early in the game

he had one nice drive at the end, but that is about it.

I wonder about Crompton, too

Also, Beck may be back. Or may not. I wonder if the poor guy didn’t psyche himself out – so afraid of making a mistake (like Rex) that he basically didn’t do anything. Maybe in a few preseason games Shanahan could tell him to just cut loose, don’t worry about mistakes, and see what happens. If we got a promising rookie, Rex and Beck and Crompton could, in effect, be fighting it out for backup. Presumably the rookie would get a good share of the playing time in the preseason. Of course, they might cut Beck even before the preseason games.

in addition to the guys you listed I'd add Dennis Dixon and Shaun Hill

I think if we don’t go the Flynn/RGIII route we could look at signing maybe two of the QB’s listed, just to have the best competition in camp. If we draft a Tannehill/Foles/Cousins that would allow us to have depth in case of injury so as not to rush a young guy. And if we go with Weeden then he has some competition.

Cousins

stock seems to have risen in your opinion since watching him at practice this week. correct?

I don't know if I'd say it has 'risen much' (probably slightly), but more his solid performance here has 'confirmed' him as a viable 2nd tier option

to me Cousins has been a 3rd to early 4th round guy. The type of QB who has a moderate starting ceiling and a low floor. At worst I see Cousins as a Todd Collins type of QB who can be a quality back-up in this league for 10+ years.

What’s held him back for me is really the lack of that ‘high ceiling’. I think he’s more like a Jason Campbell type of QB, who if he is starting and has the talent around him you can win games and go to the playoffs. If not then it is 6-8 wins a year.

What about weeden

has he really been outshining all other quaterbacks? If he is could you see him being drafted before some of the other younger late round prospects or possibly moving up boards?

by taylor21 on Jan 26, 2012 2:17 PM EST up reply actions

Weeden is def. outshining the other QB's

i’ve thought for some time that Weeden was a late 2nd or 3rd rounder, and i think he confirmed that and could even be considered a mid-2nd rounder

Shaun Hill and Drew Stanton together with the Lions starter, Matt Stafford, gave that team a good set of QBs. Hill and Stanton

played a lot in 2010. Stanton was in effect Hill’s backup. Stanton’s problem was he threw too many interceptions, but the Lions
did not have the best pass protection blocking for any of their QBs. Hill is now over the hill and neither one of these QBs will get an opportunity unless Stafford is injured. Hill is a real competitor going back to his time with the 49ers. Stanton’s history:

I'm impressed with

Stanton mobility. I would not mind seeing him as part of the group next year

WE WILL NOT HAVE TO WORRY I THINK

We will sign RG3 i have a gut feeling about this and as far as sign a back up i like dennis dixon as a very good backup because dennis dixon was a hell of a QB at oregon i believe if memory serves me right . Dennis dixon kinda reminds me a lil of RG3 he is a very good accurate QB i think worth while getting .

I barfed while reding the list of FA QBs

and now I am certain our QB solution is in the draft or at the very least we can get an equivalent QB in the draft.

by aFan4Life on Jan 26, 2012 1:40 PM EST reply actions

South of Weeden ...

I see nobody in this rookie class who will be better than Flynn or Orton for at least a season, possibly more. And I’m not sold on Weeden in the NFL.

by tuckwell on Jan 26, 2012 2:55 PM EST via iPhone app up reply actions

and Luck and RG III

Those 2 will far surpass Flynn and Orton.

But at this point I’m guessing we’re going to end up with the 10 year plan where we draft everything but a QB and we’re stuck in mediocrity nigh on forever.

by aFan4Life on Jan 27, 2012 8:57 AM EST up reply actions

No to all of these

And no to Weeden, too old and I’m afraid that Fred and TW might try to smoke him

by Bryan Black on Jan 26, 2012 4:40 PM EST via Android app reply actions

Brady Quinn

Let him play play against a porous defense for two weeks….raise his value then bench him and trade to get a draft pick out him.

by mr.snyderhireme on Jan 26, 2012 7:30 PM EST via mobile reply actions

that's even worse than trading up for Griffin

also Cutler isn’t nearly as good as people make him out to be. He’s not a top 10 QB and was arguably not a top 15 guy last year

Steveospeak - Content Manager of Fanspeak.com

by Steve Shoup on Jan 27, 2012 8:21 AM EST up reply actions

no thanks, I don't want Cutler

Cutler is a lot closer to Rex Grossman than Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady or Eli manning.

He makes a few great plays and then makes ta few otally bone headed plays. He’s streaky -too inconsistent.

by aFan4Life on Jan 27, 2012 8:58 AM EST up reply actions

you select weeden only

if you think he is the day one starter
other then that why bother ? pick foles instead

by skinsdad62 on Jan 27, 2012 3:21 PM EST reply actions

even if you think Weeden might need between half a season to a full year

i would still take him over Foles (Tannehill different story). Foles has gotten worse from a solid first day down here in Mobile and I think he’ll need a couple of years to really have a shot.

It is early, so inconclusive, but several reports from the Senior Bowl

suggest that Weeden is looking great – better than Foles. And Shanahan right there, taking it all in.

by Donnio1234 on Jan 27, 2012 7:13 PM EST reply actions

You should know more than most

Don’t put TOO much stock in the Senior Bowl. It’s an indicator, but you’ve got guys working with coaches they don’t know, throwing to players they don’t know, running plays and using terminology they barely know, in a situation they’ve never been in before. The Combine will add to the picture as well, but you can’t throw out years of tape on a guy just because he’s great/sucks at the Senior Bowl.
