Peyton Will Not Be a Colt
Just read the following story on ESPN.com...
http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/7496925/peyton-manning-talks-indianapolis-colts-changes-uncertain-future
...in which the future of Peyton Manning with the Indianapolis Colts looks bleak indeed. I took the following from Peyton's comments with The Indianapolis Star:
1. Manning states that he has "no idea" whether or not he will be with the Colts next season.
--- Don't you think that if Owner Jim Irsay was planning to keep Manning around, he would put his mind at ease about it leading up to the March deadline, when the Colts must pay hist $28 million roster bonus?
2. Manning said owner Jim Irsay will make the final call on whether the team picks up his $28 million bonus in early March or decides to cut him loose.
--- Many have thought Manning would be included on all discussions about his future in Indy. This seems to indicate that Peyton is in the dark about whether he will be paid and kept. Again, why would the FO do this if they planned on keeping Peyton around?
3. Further comments from Manning: "It's not a real good environment down there right now, to say the least. Everybody's walking around on eggshells. I don't recognize our building right now. There's such complete and total change."
--- Walking on eggshells? If you were even considering on keeping your vet QB, would you not maintain a welcoming, comfortable environment for your franchise player?
The story was very interesting and I think, in all directions, it points to the Colts cutting Manning loose in the next 2 months. This is relevant for Redskins fans as it is a foregone conclusion that a FA Peyton Manning will garner SOME sort of interest from our organization.
He may not be healthy, he may never play again, he may be a better indoor QB, he may want too much money, he may not want to play anywhere near Eli, and he may not want to play for anyone other than the Colts; however, if this article is correct, one of the all-time greats at the QB position should be hitting the FA market in the near future.

I think he knows he cannot pass the physical
My best guess is that he retires

as sad as it is...
I agree ’77. To see him in another uniform would be just as insane as it was to see Unitas in Rams gear, Montana in Chiefs, Emmitt Smith in Card…
yes he did and sometimes a move is a good thing
What about seeing Peyton in a 49ers uniform or a Ravens uniform?
Won't happen. Ravens are not getting rid of Flacco with one more year on his deal, and Alex Smith will be the starter in San Fran for at least one more year

I am beginning to wonder...
where Manning will end up, IF he is released, healthy, and doesn’t sign here. Jets may be the only landing spot. I can’t see him in Miami, not with Flynn available (who already knows the system), maybe Cleveland…. I just don’t know.
you may be right...
I did read on PFT that they have already expressed interest (I forgot that I had read that).
I would be happy for Manning there, Fitz would be thrilled as well. That would be the most logical landing spot. Also, weak division (except for 9ers defense….).
It certainly would make sense
The only thing that is off about it would be the resources ARZ spent in getting Kevin Kolb. Would they be willing to just eat a 1st and 2nd round pick…and what would they do with Kolb?
by StephanHart on Jan 25, 2012 12:08 PM EST up reply actions
well, I would assume...
they cut there loses. The contract was structured so as, if they were going to cut him, now is the time. Skelton has proved to be just as effective as Kolb, they already know how to use older vets…
no, I don't think Peyton will go to Arizona
it’s not just the teams choice and if the Colts try to send him off to a dysfunctional team like the Cardinals I bet he’ll just retire.
He’s going to go to a team that thinks they are only a QB away from the SB. I could see the Jets or the Titan, maybe even the Jaguars or Bears (if Cutler doesn’t heal properly).
here are the problems with the teams you suggest...
J-E-T-S have BIG, FAT, OAPHHH for a coach…
Titans are in the same division…
Jaguars are in the same division, are horrible team, talent-wise…
Cutler will be healed…
division doesn't matter if he is cut
and Ryan isn’t so stupid that he knows his below average QB is killing them.
Cutler might be healed – you don’t know that he will be – nobody does.
I bet he is that stupid.
Sanchez isn’t a 50 attempts per game guy. Ryan refuses to commit to the run, which is what kills him.

They need running back help to rely more on the run.
Wouldn’t be surprised if they are online to move up for Trent Richardson in the draft….could be a nice trade partner at #6…
not a chance
he’ll retire. Why would someone who already has a foot in the HOF go to a totally dysfunctional team like Arizona?
Did you pay any attention to the second half of their season?
by Bullet Nation in Exile on Jan 26, 2012 10:12 AM EST up reply actions
yes, but did you?
the last part of their season where they squeaked by the Browns, Cowboys, Rams, and Seahawks? They won those 4 games by a total of 11 points and only 1 of those teams, the Cowboys were were pretty beat up, had a winning record.
NOT impressive.

Unitas with the Chargers, I believe
That was sad. The Redskins sacked him like eight times to start his season, and it went downhill from there. It was Namath who ended up with the Rams, IIRC.

i heard this on mike and mike this morning
than i read a story on profootball talk saying they can push the 28 mill roster bonus back
i think the owner saying he will draft luck has made peytons decission for him you dont draft anybody first overall not to be your starter if anyone can find me an example of a team selecting 1st overall drafting a guy to ride the bench i will eat my words but i just dont remember this ever happening before if farve never would’ve threatend to retire Aaron Rodgers would probally be a redskin
Holy run-on Sentence
Just for argument’s sake, the Giants traded up in 2004 to get Eli, and then he sat on the bench for a majority of the year, then took over for Kurt Warner in late Novemeber
thats only because he wouldnt play for the chargers
but your right he did back-up kurt warner for a couple games.
the media draws the comparison of Rodgers – Farve as in Andrew Luck riding the bench until Peytons ready to retire or can’t play anymore .
I just dont believe that if they are confident in Peytons health and ability that they would spend the first overall pick on anything that doesnt help them get better this year they were terrible and should not be drafting back-ups in the first 3 rounds
What Peyton knows and thinks
Is a lot different than what he tells the media.
I find it rather pointless to try and gather inferences from media quotes – that’s like three different levels of misinterpretation: 1) What Manning chooses to tell the media; 2) How much of that, and in what context, the media chooses to portray his statements; and 3) How you interpret what the media has chosen to tell you.
Well on the flipside, why would Peyton put such quotes out in the media if he had been given assurances that he was going to be back?
I think you can read quite a bit into this
i agree
I think payton is done with the colts. They will let him become a FA. If he is healthy enough to play, then he will jump on with a team like the phins, redskins, or seahawks.

I am sorry but i want no part of Peyton he have been there and done that over the last two years.
but it would interesting to test the the
( not even peyton manning could look good behind our o-line) I have been saying since the cambell era
Signing Manning
would allow you to draft 2 OL and we would still have cap room to bring in a Grubbs or Nicks. McNabb and Manning are very different QBs – you can’t make comparisons
When I was a kid, my father told me, "Never hit anyone in anger, unless you're absolutely sure you can get away with it." -Russell Ziskey
Yeah, McNabb was several years younger and healthy
Thank God Cerrato is gone – he’d trade two No. 1’s for the privilege of paying the $28 million bonus.
whats the difference
two qb in the backend of their careers that arent the long term solution. I dont view OL as a big of a need as everyone seems to especially at the tackle position we definatley need new guards and a center. Peyton wont come cheap and we would likely have to pay more because we ar’nt a contender and then if he falls on his neck and doesnt get up were screwed again. I would rather get a short term guy like kyle orton to play a few games until the rookies ready but I would like to bring in grubbs and nicks
I'm not sure I follow
Your statement on the O-line. Seems like you say its fine—but then you say we need to replace 3 out of the 5 guys- which I consider a pretty considerable turnover. Also, I disagree with you that our tackles are fine. RT is a huge hole, and the questions of TW bouncing back from his suspension, keeping away from the paca lolo, and improving his play all remain.
As far as us paying more for Manning over a contender, I would say there are not that many true contenders in need of a QB save maybe SF. But in the end, we agree, my first choice would be to bring in a Stanton or Orton, and draft a Foles or Tannehill (or Griffin if he falls to 6th)

what I mean is
that the o-line issues we have can be identified late in the draft or threw free agency I feel like willie smith and tyler polumbus played well enough to challenge brown or trent for their starting roll . we have to get at least one free agent qb because we need 3 right now but i could see peyton taking less to play for the jets or fins because he would get to be on a solid with more talent and better o-lines team and get to play brady twice a year
why would he want to do that? He usually ends up losing and he's so pissed that brady has won more rings than him
and get to play brady twice a year

IF YOU WANNA SET OUR TEAM BACK FOR DECADES THEN SIGN PEYTON
Dont even entertain the notion of getting peyton manning unless you wanna set our franchise back another decade again .Can you explain to me why does anyone want a short stop gap at QB ? What is wrong with rebuilding with a QB from the draft? Why do we insist on keep getting half ass QBs from other teams instead of drafting one ? We are looking to build our team from the ground up not go ASSBACKWARDS like we have for 20 years . I say for once in our lives draft a good QB and stop wasting our time with SORRY ASS QBs that are no better than a 3rd string . Yes i consider him a good QB in manning but WHY DO YOU THINK THE COLTS ARE GETTING RID OF HIM ? First he will cost 2 much second he is on the downside of his career and one hit will knock him out if not for good and then we wasted more money on top of it . Just go for youth from the draft and do not pick up OLD GUYS THAT WANT MONEY AND RETIRE ON OUR ASS .
Peyton will either play another season with the colts or retire
I just don`t see him signing for another team (to risky for teams to take a QB with a history of neck injuries) but stranger things have happened in the NFL.
Not a really bold prediction
I can honestly see Shanny signing Manning if he’s released and healthy to his liking (not that I would want that).

If Peyton is healthy, and would come for a reasonable amount, he definitely
deserves a look. Why not? When healthy, he is great, and could easily hope to play two or three more years. I’d still gun for Tannehill, Foles or Weeden in the second round or later, too.
Unlikely.
could easily hope to play two or three more years.
especially at a high level.
"By far the worst performers on the (R*dskins) are in the front office." – Sally Jenkins
I dont want the Redskins to sign Peyton Manning just nnot the right fit for him or the team
however If Peyton Manning is healthy I could see the Baltimore Ravens as a good fit for him a veteran team that he could get over the hump, and if he get hurt you still would have Joe Flacco, but i dont know if flacco could handle that mentally but maybe he could learn a thing or two from Manning
I agree that Flacco could not handle that but if you the Ravens it might get you to the promise land
Ray Lewis would love to get to another SB before he retires, and Ed Reed never been to SB so a bold move like that might push them over the top.

Let's think about what we are saying
Can we for once, please realize we’ve been down this road before(just 2 years ago with McNabb), and it hasn’t worked. Do you guys think Peyton is going to want to come to a shitty team in the twightlight of his career? Unlike many other players in the NFL, it’s not about the money for Manning. This guy has made more in endorsements, than he’ll ever see on a football field, and if he hangs up the cleats, he could have a job with just about any network he wants as a media personality.
If Peyton is not in Indy this season, he won’t be playing. We need to stop with this Peyton to the Redskins shit.

Big name FA & WAS...typical
It’s typical that every big name FA, like Peyton, is linked to the Redskins due to the past, but shouldn’t happen. Skins nation, please no more Peyton talk. Let him go to ARZ or NYJ.
so if Peyton
was healthy enough to play 2 seasons, you wouldn’t want him on our team??
don't think he'd come here anyways...
considering Eli’s in the same division.

Peyton just had an interview in Indy where he said he was shocked at what was
happening there, and that he definitely intended to play. i think he’ll get cut and go somewhere if the pay is at all reasonable. I’d guess the odds are against him coming here, but if he did, I’d be happy. Hopefully the Skins would still draft their QBOTF – Tannehill, Foles, Weeden or whoever Shanahan likes. Peyton would hopefully give us two or three terrific seasons while the young guy is being groomed.
In many ways he's a good fit for the Redskins
of the teams on the speculation mill, we’re the only team with a relatively steady, well-respected coach and steady situation.
We’re in desperate need for a QB, and Shanahan must be cognizant of the fact that if he doesn’t start producing soon, his job could be in jeopardy which weighs against him trying to draft a rookie QB and develop him over 3-4 years.

Chris Mortensen and Mark Schlereth, on NFL32 yesterday...
both thought Manning in Washington would be a great idea. I don’t know if any of you hold these guys in any respect, but I thought it was telling. Mark knows Shanny very well, from his days in Denver. So, IF Manning is healthy, and he does want to come here, I may be persuaded…
I don't know
on 1 hand it would be nice to have a real QB, something we haven’t had since Brad Johnson left. On the other hand how long can Manning play? On the other, other hand picking up Manning might be a signal that we’re serious about putting together a competitive team. On the other, other, other hand people might think we’re going back to the bad old days of giving huge amounts of money to players over their prime.
What makes the whole thing so ugly is what the perrenial mess this team is in. 20 years of rebuilding – I’m sick of it. We’re never going to be a contender with the quality of QBs we’ve had for the last 10 years.
To me the lesson of the year is the 49ers. They won a lot of games with their incredible defense and running game but in the end their QB couldn’t do the little bit that was needed out of him to win in the playoffs. You can only go so far with an average QB.
I still think ARZ makes the most sense for Manning with their Dome and Larry Fitgerald
But if ARZ doesn’t want to ditch Kolb, then I think Washington makes as much sense as anywhere. We have a young, developing team and a HOF coach. If Peyton is hungry, healthy, and reasonably priced, it’s a tough sell not to bring him in.
I just hope we don't
get suckered into a trade were we have to give Indy some draft picks to get him. I can’t believe Indy will pck him the $28 mill in March.
When I was a kid, my father told me, "Never hit anyone in anger, unless you're absolutely sure you can get away with it." -Russell Ziskey
I cant wait to listen to that.
Love Cowherd, and I get sized every time he talks about the Redskins…even though its not very often and he’s using using us as an example of how NOT to win in the NFL haha
But I mean…we have a solid defense, decent run game, decent receivers, good coach. Is it so far fetched to think that we could win the Super Bowl with one of the greats behind center? I don’t think so.
Don't love Cowherd
But he was the lone voice of reason on sports radio about Teblow. That earns him another chance with me.

and his anecdotes are so simple and concise...
it’s what is called “common sense”. He definitely brings an interesting perspective to issues.
(BTW, if I were him, I would change my last name, just saying)
given what we've learned about the Colts this season
I think just about ANY team could win with Peyton under center. A team shouldn’t totally collapse when they lose 1 guy – it shows that he was their offense.
I think many of us have failed to understand the nature of the injury…
It is not a structural injury–it is a nerve injury (something that I know a lot about)
“I’ll paraphrase Dr. Watkins, who operated on Peyton back in September. He said, ‘There is no potion, there is no medicine, there is no modality, there is no series of exercises, there is no test, and there is no surgery that can predict accurately when a nerve will regenerate.’ And that is the issue here. And from what I understand, at least about a month ago, progress was ongoing … But no one can know, when and if Peyton’s nerve that controls the tricep muscle will regenerate completely, and will regenerate enough for him to play. The hope of every doctor we talked to—and we talked to many—is that it will. The expectation is that it will. But when it will, no one can predict.”
This was from Bill Polian formally of the Indianapolis Colts
this is why they tried stems cells, to try and speed up the nerve regeneration… in other words to shorten it from years to months (I’m interested to see if it works)
